Decisions decisions, since selling the SD and getting the SMC stolen I am completely stuck as to what to get next. I've still got a Husky SMR (completely stripped at mo so nothing to ride right now ) so I'm all good for B-road manic rides.
This bike has got to be good for all day use, including B-road blasts (when, not if the Husky needs work), touring around UK and Europe (done this on SD before so can handle naked bikes) giving big grins on the passes, and just to be a general day to day bike. So far without riding I have narrowed down to 990SMR-dorsoduro factory and ducati hyperretard. All got poor range, maybe SM T tank fits SMR, anyway can always carry some spare fuel. Kinda ruled out wristy sportsbikes unless someone knows different.

I guess my list in order of preference would be:

1.fun
2.fun
3.good in the twisties
4. a bit different
5. KTM has gotten in the blood
6.V twin (preferably)
7. someone talk me out of SMR

Any help from my ex bretheren would be super.
Get the SMR

Yep luggage choice is as good on the SMR as the SMT.

How about BMW megamoto?
SMR gets my vote

Depends how much you're prepared to pay. If you want something different, go for a Streetfighter if you can afford it. At the other end of the scale try an find a low milage Cagiva V Raptor. They are batshit mental, big V twin fun. I used to have one and may well do so again...These days even nice ones don't go for much money.
MV Agusta Brutale or a Ducati Multistrada spring to mind.
I should have put in my list near the top, head turning ability when walking away. MV-Multistrada and Cagiva are probably excellent machines but they are all a bit fugly. My bad for not putting i wanted a looker (need it be said after SD)

Must admit though the Streetfighter has been nagging away at the back of my mind for a while, just didn't want to admit it.

Keep the ideas coming.
Aprilia RS125
if you aint going KTM (yeah right) then I'd be looking at BMW. Bit old geezer but so what. I'd avoid Italian (reliability) and Japanese (yawn). Maybe a Trumpet Tiger if that floats your boat....but otherwise a nice fat beemer to ease you into old age mate.

SMR
why not just go for another SD ?
Hey dude...

Well, the old advice will crop up - i.e. "Go ride them all and see for yourself". Until you do that, opinions are like arseholes - everyone has one - and on here most of us will tell you how great the Superduke is. Natch.

I had a 625 SMC (and a Husky 450 SMR) so I too have an opinion as to what might be good for you... and I traded up from that superb toy to a carbed 950 SM... It's a great bike with about 120mile tank range, with supersmooth fuelling, huge steering lock, top quality suspension and was by far and away the best London commuter and fucked-up B-road scratcher I've ever owned. I'd happily ride it for hundred of miles in a day and it could easily tour. I kept the 625 for 4 months after I bought the 950 - but I never rode it again. Which says it all in terms of being a great bike for fun riding only.

The newer FI 990 engine makes a great SM, and of course they have more power, but on that type of SM-inspired chassis and riding position I prefer the smoothness of the carbed fuelling over a few extra horses. The older 950SMR is prettier, but the tank is a little smaller - but not as small as the 990 SMR - which has a peanut for a tank.

As for the Dorsudo thingy; the 1100 is a giant tank that makes the GS look like a trail bike, and the 750 is underpowered. The Hypermotard gets great reviews but the chassis and engine don't match even the old KTM 950 SM in many opinions and reviews - and to me it's a bit overdesigned... By that just my opinion.

Now go and test ride them all. You'll either buy the 990 SMR cos it's stunning to look at, and you have enough cash (and you won't care about the tank range or touring any more) or you'll get a 950SMR cos they are a bargain and give max thrills for modest cash with acceptable tank range (80 miles?) and they're a bit prettier than the standard 950SM - unless touring stays high up on your priorities in which case you'll get the 990 SMT (esp if you are under 5'9") or a 990 SM with a tall screen, cos it's nicer to look at than the T.
...having said all that, if you want a great naked all-rounder that can stunt/track/scratch/tour/commute/pose then I'd get a standard Superduke.
You know the list, and the SD still have compelling virtues that keep it very competitive, if not THE choice for many. I have 20 some odd bikes and it pleases me the most of anything I own. If it did not I'd go buy what I felt would be more pleasing. Only its lack of "newness" and power to compete with the MOST powerful keep it from selling more. Everyone wants NEW.

Aprilia Tuono 4: you want a twin, me too, so it's out. To me it's also ugly.

Dorso: I could never go up that much in weight without serious other benefits, which it does not have, and it's not the handler on a pure performance level.

Ducati Streetfigher: More power, a lot, but less comfy ergos (for me, 6'-1"+), how about that exhaust in the heel for bad ergos also? Looks don't do it for me either.

Ducati Hypermotard: It's nice that the first 4 letters spell "hype". What a hyped bike. I was expecting miracles, but when I rode it I found an old fashioned air cooled motor feel which starts gasping when the SD is really coming on. Weird riding position (and I am used to the 690SMC and a true motard, the Husky 510) and detatched road feel compared to SD. Hated it.

MV: Talk with people waiting 6 months for parts would put me off even without other consideratins. Other considerations? How about much less comfy (for me) than SD, still harsher too.

Speed Trip: Not a V-twin, but the latest is still a great bike. Too bad about exhaust and the new ugly lights.

SMR: More weight, without a fat increase in power, less of the "razor sharp" handling feel (due to longer softer susepnsion). If you ned the softer feel, might be for you, but I want a true carver for the pavement. It's a personal thing, looks, but I can't see anyone preferring the looks of this to the SD.

The SD is a great package. Great motor if you don't need 130+ horse, great chassis, fun on a blast for 30 minutes or fun for 400 miles. Still has cool looks.

If you need more power the Streetfighter is the first place to look. Has it all performance wise, real company who has parts (and if you think Ducati or KTM has parts problems just check out parts on MV) and is supported by aftermarket such as pipes.'
Some excellent replies, really good stuff, cheers.

On a side note, anyone got anything good bad or indifferent to say about the new monster evo, seems like such a great little simple package?

I know this is all hearsay untill I get out on em, had a look at over weekend:

SMR - to similar to SD (not a bad thing but would like a change)

Hypermotard - didn't wow me and ergos felt a bit wrong

Dorsoduro - a bit boring to look at and felt a bit budget

Streetfighter - a little busy looking, bar angle felt wrong (I know easy to change) fugging pricey

Monster evo - pretty little thing apart from headlight

Never really looked at Ducatis and was quite blown away with how dinky and light they feel (only in shop not ridden yet)
