oil on wiring harness?

#3That area on mine is always covered in a coating of oil and grime too. But that's because I liberally coat that whole area with WD40 or better still ACF 50 every time I clean, or work on, the bike. It freaks me out that there is so much crucial wiring and plug connectors etc. right down there at road level in the wet being pounded with the spray from the front wheel. The more oil protection the better I reckon!
But seriously though, there's no oil pipes or anything that should inadvertently put oil down there. Except front cylinder head gasket problems?

#6Mine does it to. I think it's just crap from the roads. Every time I clean mine it gets gunked up again no matter how careful I am to keep oil out of it. I'd stick the whole thing in a plastic bag if I could.

#9This is something that has always troubled me. I think it's just a problem waiting to occur - eventually an electrical plug will get corroded and fail. My prophylaxis has been to put each major cable connector in its own condom tied at both ends with cable ties. I make the condoms out of lengths of inner tubes from my kids old bikes. Occasionally I cut them off (the cable ties), make sure there is no moisture trapped inside and then put a new one on. Seems to work but even if it doesn't it makes me feel like I'm doing something to avoid a problem.
On many occasions I've thought about the wisdom of having the mesh at the front of the belly spoiler. Surely this just funnels water, oil and grime onto the cables and battery box Etc. I can't see that this area really needs air flow so perhaps a belly pan without the mesh is the way to go. Having the battery in that location means (of course) that it is really hard to give the engine a good wash without fear of creating an electrical fault. IMO an ideal design would have been to have the battery where it is for mass centralization but to have the cable connectors remote like under the seat. I guess it's all compromise...

#10Happens with mine as well, everytime, I always thought it was from the oilchange when you remove the filter. But made sure to keep it clean the last one and still rather large buildup. Your guess is as good as mine

#11I love my Super Duke, but I've always thought that was a very bad decision to put the battery, wiring and connectors just behind the front wheel. I can't think of a worse place to put it! I suppose they couldn't have put the battery and wiring under the seat where it belongs because of the exhaust being right below.
Over the winter, I put dielectric grease on every connector on the bike. I never ride the SD if it looks like rain. I have Hondas for that. Sooner or later, I'll get a good soaking.
I just keep telling myself that KTM is a dirtbike company, they know more about this than I do. And ther are guys in the UK that ride all winter thru all sorts of salt and sand, and they don't complain much about electrical problems.
