Petrol/fuel what you run your SD/SDR on??

Hi all

I have a quick question regarding petrol/fuel, and want to know what is the best to use?

When I first took my bike for a test ride it kept cutting out on me at low revs, and I have experienced this before on two of my mates SD's, so thought it might have been something to do with V twins....

Since I have owned the bike I have always put 100 in, and my bike never cut out at low revs, but I didn't pick up on this. A few months ago I got caught out and needed to fuel up and the best they had was 98, the next time I took my bike out it was running like a bag of shlt..... so headed straight to the petrol station and topped up with 100. and its been fine.

Has anyone else noticed this? or what fuel do they recommend/use? im sure in the manual it says anything from 95 +, I think my SD would refuse to start if i put 95 in it.....

Is there any negatives to 100 apart from the price??

Cheers for any advice

Regarding the cutting out - this could be a number of things, fuel maybe being one of them. Depending on the map on your bike would the a small difference in octane rating of a fuel be enough to cause cut outs?

I use 97/98 as the map I'm running has some ignition advance. Are you in the UK? If so I wasn't aware you could still get 100 octane fuel.
I've run race gas once (100oct) mixed it with half a tank of 91 and didn't really notice a difference...
Aside of that 91 premium is the highest available at your average gas station here in Cali...
My S.D. runs great on it..I don't think the 100 would make a very big
difference unless you had your bike tuned for it...and probably shouldn't
run race gas unless it HAS been tuned for it..
I'd search for something else that is causing the "cutting out"

In Australia I found out that a lot of high performance bikes and maybe cars also run bad with Shell V power due to the additives in them.
Only hearsay I never tried.
I run BP ultimate 98 in all my bikes and I never have any problems. I'm not a fan of BP as they are always the first to put the price up and last to come down here in OZ and NZ, but since I run a bit more ignition advance in the SD I like to stick to that Ultimate 98.
Shell V Power. Reasonable comparative price here in Singapore makes it affordable. But much to my chagrin as I'm in the oil/gas exploration business and Shell are about the biggest bunch of t@ssers around.
CAM-2,,,110 octane,,,no ethanol,,,,,,
What ever's available.

Normally use Tesco standard as it's my closest garage. Have tried different types from different places, the only difference I noticed was from one place in the middle of nowhere (musta been a bad tank). Any thing else I haven't noticed a difference, whether it be Ultimate, V-power or bog standard 95.
Huh, I run kerosene and liquid oxygen in my bike. I used to use hydrazine, but its harder and harder to get (thanks sooooo much "war on terror").

Without boring everyone on the differences in octane ratings in different regions of the planet, big octane numbers are NOT an advantage. The lower value you can get away with (without engine knock), the better. I know it seems counterintuitive, because you're paying more for the additional iso-octane (and less of the good volatile stuff per unit volume). I'm confident there's more on this subject elsewhere on the site (and yeah - I'm too fooking lazy to look it up for you - try search). Race gas is a waste of money unless you are running additional timing advance (beyond the stock maps) and/or higher compression ratios.

Anyway, the only fancy-schmancy fuel I could see being advantageous in the SD, are those that are ethanol-free (for the sake of the dreaded tank 'mumps').
There is 100 near my house in West Los Angeles, Ca. It's $10 USD a gallon . Typical 91 is about $4.20 a gallon. I haven't really wanted to shell out $40 to see how it runs.
I really don't see the point of running a high octane gas in my SuperDuke. I usually use the standard shell or chevron 87. It always has been fine for my bike. I doubt there is much difference between they way a 87 or say a 94 will make your bike behave. There's a good write up on gas here:

I run mine on regular unleaded

Apparently unless your vehicle is tuned for 100oct it'll make no difference
I tried methanol mix a couple of times on my old bikes, you can buy that stuff at your local "remote control bikes/helo enthusiast store" They have all sorts of mixes there.
