Planning to visit NZ - need a few pointers

Looking for some help from the lads down in NZ.

My wife & I are planning to head for NZ in March to attend a wedding.
I hope to rent a bike and do a few days 2 up. We'll have 06-13 March for traveling around.
Due to the time limitations we are only planning to visit the North Island. I was thinking to heading for Paihia & Cape Reinga??

Anyway looking to get a few pointers to get a feel for distances, good routes, places to see, where to rent a bike (any KTM's going?) etc

Sounds like a plan - Wheres ya wedding?

Its good up noth and you can't go wrong up there - might want to check out the Waipoua Forest in one direction at least...

Roads are good an twisty and the scenery is excellent - plus the Mangamuka gorge into Kaitaia is one of the best roads in NZ! You will not be dissapointed!!

If you get a KTM Adventure from you can 90 Mile beach which is an official road from Ahipara to Cape Reinga which would be an experiece.

Repeat after me... Must start 2 hours before low tide... Must not get caught in the soft sand at high tide... Witness all the wrecked cars on the way up...

See what you think and let me know how much detail you want - I can do pubs motels places to eat and see...

That all sounds superb, great info Bodge!!
The wedding is in Auckland somewhere (will have to check with the wife where exactly)

Reckon I'd go for an Adventure as my wife doesn't like being on the back of the Superduke. Would like to get off the tarmac roads a bit as well so this will be my chance to test ride a potential future bike... Can't wait.


We also will be attending a wedding in Sydney a week after the wedding in Auckland - all going well I can convince the wife to rent a bike and head for the Blue Mountains ...

Anyway - will look into the pointers you,ve given and might be back with more questions if you don't mind.

Just what Bodge said,Waipoua forest definately worth a vist. Northlands a neat place to ride, about 5mths back I borrowed an Adventurer for a couple of days & took in some great roads,gravel roads in that province are good fun !!

Agreed with what my Jafa counterpart said.

Auckland-up the west coast via-Dargeville-Waipoua Forest-Rawene ferry to Kohukohu- Mangamuka's to 90Mile Beach-Cape Reinga and back down the east coast including Paihia-Old Russel Rd and back onto SH1 to Auckland.

If you have an extra day or two,do come down my way (2hours south of Auckland) and I'll show you so divine roads around Coromandel...or commonly known as the Coro GP!!

Shouldn't be a problem if you want some people to ride with too.

I doubt that there are any bike rentals up Paihia way but get a hold of me when in Rotorua if ya keen on a bourbon or 6.
I live 30mins away

We were in the South Island for 3 weeks in Feb/Marc this year and it was absolutely FANTASTIC !!!

We hired a BMW GS1200 but HATED it !!

We're going to the North Island in 18 months so I'm interested to see how you get on.

Its a fantastic place for bikes !!

Typical bloody tourist parked in the middle of the road (P/T),neat photo's, the SI is such a special place, motorcycle nivarna. I live in the North Island & have covered over 8000k's down there this year over 2 trips. One thing about the SI is that due to the lack of traffic people that are not used to driving on our side of the road (keep LEFT) sometimes forget which side of the road they should be on. Lost a mate to a head on 3yrs ago on the West Coast of the South Island, as they (tourist) left a one-way bridge on the wrong side of the road, dulp straight into the path of my mate approaching the bridge (your not really expecting the on coming vehicle to be closing your options down on your side of the road).Bad learning curve for the tourist. Remember take it easy out there !

Thx for the pics - they look nothing short of stunning!! Maybe I should be looking for a more long term stay???

Ireland is LH drive as well so I should be OK!! Sorry to hear about ur mate Dazza!

DMNTD - I'm not much of a bourbon lad. Irish 12/15 yr old is my kinda drink. But I mainly stick to the Black Stuff!! Would not mind lookin you up and say hello! Will get back to ya before hand anyway...

Hey Bink - Don't know Rotovegas that well - DMTD is probably your man for the local roads down that way... But from Auckland you could do the Coromandel Loop and then head down to Rotovegas... It would be a longish but doable and very awesome day... Particularly the Whangamata to Waihi roads - awesome! And they don't call it the Coro GP for nothin!

you can hire a Superduke of these guys they are good people.

This is the one I was loaned when mine was in for its first service... Handy ventura rack - sad standard pipes...
