So I had the good fortune of riding a 1290 and 1100RR back to back last week. A friend was visiting from interstate and one of our good friends used to work at a large bike shop here in Brisbane and pulled some strings to get them both some bikes and I got one too.

1290 was a great ride, std exhaust is a bit soft though The TCS was pretty incredible mid corner and i've never ridden with it before. Everything seemed quite sedate though and just after i was about to turn off TCS it started pouring rain and we started swapping bikes. Comfort was amazing and i could do alot of kms on it and it felt right at home straight away. Great bike and the only one i'll be getting to upgrade from the 990.

1100RR was a freak. With everything turned on it was still crazy and the power was mental. The V4 is a crazy rush and the lack of engine brakeing threw me alot. Still a crazy ride but the higher rearsets and lower bars wasn't great for me but would be a freak on track. Definitely had alot more access to minor changes to different parts of traction/wheelie control level settings etc. Pretty awesome except the Italian way of changing settings make it hard to use lol.

All in all i get the hype about the 1100RR, its an incredible bike with a shitload of power on tap even when in "safe" mode. Its crazy lol. The 1290 is where my heart lies though. The seating position, the ride, the power and everything. Jealous of you guys with them

I'm having this exact debate with myself. They're both awesome bikes, and I'm back and forth about which is the right choice for me. The torque, comfort, and ease of riding the KTM, versus the slightly more mental and aggressive ride of the Aprilia (plus the V-4). Handlebar risers for the Aprilia are available, but I'm not sure about lowering the foot pegs. If I find a solution for that, the choice becomes even more difficult.
