The day I got my Superduke it stalled on the way home. At the time I thought I hadn't disengaged the clutch enough - new bike etc etc.
For several months the SD would intermittently cut out but there never seemed to be any pattern. Sometimes it would be at the lights, sometimes leaned over, sometimes with a near empty tank etc. I think I just about read every post on this forum trying to look at different possibilities - fuel, electrics, fuel pump seals blah blah blah.
Then one day on "quite a fast corner" the thing cut out and I had a near death experience (NDE) involving a landscape, a large immovable wooden object holding up some leaves and skid marks on the inside of my leathers. Managed to stay upright but decided enough was enough. Eventually found out that it was the Roll-Angle Sensor (RAS) which was probably just faulty. It appeared to work Ok but when it was removed the problem went away and has never returned.
For anyone interested I did buy a new RAS but have never installed it for fear of another NDE. I figure it is better to hit the deck and the engine self destruct than for me to self destruct because the roll angle sensor decided to do another trial run.
Also spent a lot of time chatting with the local KTM mechanic who was helpful, concerned, seemed competent and made lots of good suggestions etc but didn't quite pin the problem.
If you have problems with the roll angle sensor you can simply unplug it if you want and, although you'll get a ECU warning light (five flashes), the engine will still run. In my case I took the circuit board apart and siliconed the gravity pendulum onto the circuit board (the circuit board just slips out). Doing this inactivates the RAS and stops the ECU warning.
There is probably a way of fooling the ECU into believing it has a active RAS by using a correct resister to provide the correct voltage to the ECU but I didn't go that far.
I do wonder how many of the complaints that this forum has seen regarding engine cut-outs may have been related to the RAS.
Still love my SD. She managed to keep me upright despite introducing a little bit of excitement into our lives.
PS Moderators. Has anyone ever written to KTM asking for a member of the technical group to become a member and monitor these forums? I assume they have.
