Ducati rider Valentino Rossi expected to retire from MotoGP at the end of this season
Valentino Rossi, the nine-time world champion and arguably the greatest rider in the history of two-wheel racing, will retire from MotoGP at the end of this season, if not before, sources close to the Italian have told The Telegraph.

Rossi, whose contract with Ducati expires at the end of 2012, said in January that he wished to pen a two-year extension.
That piece of paper remains unsigned, however, while speculation linking him with a return to Yamaha or Honda, either as part of a factory or satellite team, is understood to be no more than that.
Rossi has experienced a humbling 18 months since teaming up with Ducati in a match initially billed as made in heaven; the marriage of a genuine global superstar with the famous Italian marque.
But he finished last year without a win for the first time in his career and lies ninth in the standings this term; the pace of his bike way off that of the Japanese outfits.
“The Doctor”, as he is known to his fans around the world, managed a seventh place at Estoril on Sunday, having qualified ninth, which was seen as a decent result, a sign of how far expectations have fallen.

I really hoped he was going to do it at Ducati. Rossi on a fast bike makes for great racing. With only Lorenzo able to challenge Stoner its a bit boring at the front. So wish Super Sic was still with us and out there I was so looking forward to what he was going to do this year. GP needs a racer like that.

Rossi is still racing MotoGP? He's gotta be what, in his 30s now? LOL.

Is the GOAT (debatable looking beyond race wins and championships) following the path of most moto champions? E.g. starts crashing and injuring self regularly, missing races, blows chances for championships, followed by seasons of struggling to podium, followed by blame the bike, and/or tyres, and/or team - ? In other words, pretty much the standard exit plan of every modern MotoGP racer?

The guy commanded so much money for so long between salary and endorsements, not to mention god-like status in Italy equivalent to a winning-goal scoring player on the world cup champion team. He couldn't possibly be driven by money or ego - what's left to prove? If its his goal to break himself into bits, I guess there's always IOM to enter and win ...

...... current leader of the World Superbike standings is a geriatric 42 (max biaggi) and carlos checa is only a year behind him at 41!

.....i know its not moto gp, but its still top flight bike racing! Just because rossi's getting to an age where he would be too old to play premiership Kevball doesn't mean he has to hang up his bike keys!

Um, in case some of you guys missed it - the "30s" comment was intended as a humor point. That being a reflection on western societies' obsession with youth to a degree where all assume a former champion in his early 30s is no longer able to win races in MotoGP. Seriously? Aware of the feats of geriatric 40-somethings you all admire (that I admire as well). It appears there's no stopping some of them, any time soon.

Wait - you guys forgot Laird Hamilton in your geriatric lists!

Laird Hamilton? What about Kelly Slater, he is 39 and still world champion for almost 11 years in a row. The Rossi of the surfing world.

The Cycle World article I referred to was about Greg Hancock. Mr. Hancock was the only American to win an international motorcycle championship last year - at the ripe old age of 41. It was his second world championship. He won his first world championship in the early nineties, so his career was cited as an exception to the rule. http://www.greghancock.com/
