SD.net New Look. What do people think and want?

OK guys I know we have a Welcome Back thread and this should probably be in General rather than Hooliganism but it will get a lot more views in here. I have made it a sticky for now until people have had their say.

On the whole I' think most people are happy with the new look and features of the site (Pete being the exception ).Thanks again for the hard work Dougle.
Perhaps the biggest area of contention is the info/avatar being moved to the right. Please feel free to vote on this and we'll go with the majority.


For me personally and apart from the fact it just looks a bit weird this way, I like to see who posted before reading the actual post. The big problem is photos being chopped off by the fixed right border if they are too big. I had a look back through the Show your Superduke thread and even full screen on my 23" screen it's a issue with lots of images being cropped into. Anyway that's just my opinion and as such I voted revert to left. Please feel free to air yours.

I prefer avatars on the left for 2 main reasons, the photos being chopped off as you said, and also we tend to rear left -> right, and it makes it easier for the brain to take in who is saying what.

Lets be clear the images being cropped and the position of the profile info are two different problems, with two different fixes.

I'm poking around at the moment to see if i can have two skins one on the left and the original that is on the right, so people can choose in their profile which look they like, maybe some more darker skins also, to come later on as and when they are finished.

Pics is first priority fo' sho' , then i'll get this skin sorted.

Nothing taken to heart at all, all comments are welcome good and bad, get differences in opinion all week at work too, though mainly about the behavior of a site (as i'm the behind the scenes guy)

We are lucky that the people using the site are the people making the decisions.

I'm digging everything, yeah I did notice looking to the left and having to remind myself. The only other bit is how heavy the new contrast is between the background and foreground, maybe tone it down a bit and keep it all warm grays instead of the cool. Also when I open the forum my eyes go directly to the orange header (Profile/messages/post/FAQ/Search/Members/Login). If you want to keep that orange pop maybe decease the overall height of the banner by maybe at least 50% maybe more. It will work with the font fine and not be so dominant.

Of course I appreciate everything you guys do and props for the new look and features, cheers to that and thanks again for all of your work. this continues to be the best forum I've ever been on from the bikes we all dig to actual knowledge of them

Oh yeah, I dont know and this is just and idea, is it possible to add a spellcheck for fcking retards such as myself when posting a reply? Just a thought and would keep me from having to google half the words I write because I'm functionally illiterate, again awesome and thanks again

Hadnt noticed avatars had moved.Just noticed i couldnt get on one evening this week and it all came back much brighter.

All good to me, though (thought I was banned for a while) anyone that whinges must be a big sissy.

the biggest problem that I am having with the new site layout has to do with the topic title being so close to the OP's name just below. My big old finger ends up hitting the poster's name, causing it to open the profile. If the info box was back at the left the poster name could be removed and my navigation would be easier. i am usingan Ipad and it is new to me so this is what seems to cause half my fumbling.

The avatar on the right is probably the only thing I got a real problem with. We got to know the avatars from the regulars and since we read left to right it is nice to see first who rode the post.
Besides that, I like the layout and there is a great job done to upgrade this.

I also find it slightly more difficult to navigate, is that just me or do others have the same problem?

My 2 cents are Avatars back to the left and maybe a little less bright. I always find white text on a black background (the old look) a bit of a strain to read, but the new look has me wearing sunglasses to visit the site

i like it, yep, avatars to the left would be more in line with what we're used to, but it's much better than it was, the new features make it easier to navigate, well, for me anyway........
Any chance you can have pop up previews when you scroll over a thread on the front page? just a thought.

I loved the old format and style. I go to a lot of forums and this was the only one that had a black background, made it unique, stylish and (for me) easy to read still.

Well, I guess I'm not going to get what I want (revert to old), but then at least put the bloody avatars back where they're supposed to be.

Oh, and before this bloody change, I was on, like, 50 000 posts. What happened?!?!?!?

Ik like the new look.
Avatar on the right is fine. Good choice of background color, probably better if a little darker , not too much though.

bit too bright
first paragraph popup preview on thread heading
hard to see what are new posts etc, think it flashes but hard to see because of the colour

I do appreciate all the hard work that goes into building a site and maintaining it as I'm trying to build one for my son. With that said, I really liked the looks of the old site better. I know you can't go back to that software but the new features with the old scheme would be great. Avatars on the left is my vote. Thanks for all the good work.

When I search "unread posts" the font and size for hooliganism/technical etc needs to either be bigger or bolder IMO I find it hard to distinguish which section its from.

Maybe Bold and Red, stands out like the Mods names.

I don't like it. Maybe you could try a darker color in the area around the Post A Reply area instead of the gray. The text block in white is good. Just don't like the gray areas. And yes please move Avatars back to the left please. Or make the text area in gray and change the other area in gray to a better contrasting color. Just Don't like it as it is. It put me in a bad mood. &*%$#. Or maybe I'm just having a bad day. Lol

Hola! i'm here lurking in the background, yes site was mental for a bit, made some changes to sort the big images out but the site wouldn't use the new stuff, (skin caching etc).

If it is still quirky it'll be a case of hitting Ctrl+F5 (r for chrome) (Cmd + click refresh button for macs) in your browser, or wait till it does it itself.

Hi,

for each post, at least on my computer, there is a big empty space in each post's text box where the avatar on the right is. The actual text only starts below the avatar space. Where there is an avatar picture, the empty space then is 1-2 inches (man inches) per post.

Hmmm no you were right the first time kilck, i don't see that at all. Can anybody having this problem "Hard Refresh" their browser (Ctrl + F5 etc etc)

It works for me now, ie no more blank space, but hard refresh was not enough, I had to clear the cache and such as well.

Having links open in a new window would still be handy though

Rep points are a good way of knowing if the poster you're taking advice from is likely to know what they are talking about !!

I think those light bulb topics need to become regular topics. The need for this importance at the top has far outlasted itself. It appears that it does not matter what the majority think they want on either of these major light bulb issues. the holders of the keys will do what they like. I do find it interesting that the topics that seem to need light bulb priority are also threads whose genesis was from a moderator. What one finds mostest important, Is , and shall stay mostest important as long as their name is in red. If KTM were truely listening, or the website designers were truly listening they could and would peruse deeper rhat the top threads to hear the cries of wisdom.

That is a cool looking site, looks like they have their own stig.

Quick update, left hand profiles are ready to rock, have been trying to get the greeks to let me into the server again so i can get it working. stay tuned.

It seems like more there was more activity before the change. After months of the new sight and less activity it's hard to become a fan of the new look... If we have to keep it please move the avatars to the left.

Hey guys i been away . glad to be back. and glad to have my Bike back too i might add.

This issue here , at first i was like is this the same forum , then i saw familiar posts and was relieved .

i have a feeling ( at least for me anyway -- and i'm a newbie here so it doesn't really matter anyway - LOL ) but it's just the fact that things are changed that messes the brain up. I think i kinda liked the avatars being on the left as well , it sets up knowing who's post i'm reading. And the left to right thing makes sense . I think i'd get used to it though and the rapid eye movement looking for the avatar first then going left again is supposto be good for the brain ( Oh brother ) .........

anyway just stoppin in to say hello mostly. I have a big story to tell when i get a chance. All about the tuning and all that jazz on my bike.

in the mean time the season is upon us ( at least here in California it is ) and i just got me bike back Hallelujah - Let the good times roll Babay !!

Ps. How come i don't receive notices in my mail box for ALL the posts to the forum . I haven't gotten any in my mailbox anymore . And nothing is going into spam filters either.

Am i supposto be notified EVERY time there's a NEW post ANYWHERE on the forum ?

Am I the only one that gets half a picture when said is any bigger than a postage stamp?
I do not recall having this happen when we had that old ugly website layout.
If a person posts what it is they would like to see this website graphic interface morph into, does that mean that said comments are taken into consideration or is this just a place to bitch?
I was just at a post that was showing something that was reffered to in the posters comments that would have been in the left side of a posted photo, to no avail. I have noticed that there are quite a few posts that only show the right nipple and the left is, well, left out. I say we need equall tyme between the left and the right and if we revert to the left it will naked things right again. Politics aside, this place is not PC, that is photo correct.
