SD track bike?

Hey guys, not been here for a while, had a 07 SD a couple of years ago, sold for a RC8, which in turn had to be sold to put some money into the house

Anyway i'm getting more into track days than road riding now, sold my road bike (RSVR) and just got a early RSV as a track bike.

So i've got 3k and my RSV (1.5k) if i don't get something with my 3k it will get hoovered up with family shit, bills etc etc

I want to keep to a V twin so maybe a SD for the track, what do you guys think?? Are they ok as track bikes without having to spend a fortune?

My SD had Akro's & a TuneECU map, i've still got the software, cable etc so thats sorted

Looking at this possibly but dunno with 30k on it

Cheers
That looks like a pretty fair value. The SD is big fun to track IMO, but that "having to spend a fortune" part ... I dunno ... seems an expensive bike to keep lit for track-only use. What do well-used RC51s (VTR1000) go for over there? Never owned one, but I have a perverse admiration for my friend's, which I've ridden and have done many services on. Really robust bikes, fun to ride, make huge gobs of torque, remarkably smooth, and you can't beat the combo of the bellowing twin and the whine of the cams' all-gear-drive. I'd also suggest a TL, but they are a bit too quirky for even my tastes, go-fast goodies getting harder to find, etc.
They are brilliant track bikes IMO. Bloody good laugh and there is nothing better than going past a IL4 rider and knowing they are thinking WTF!
3200 quid for a salvage one seems a bit steep. I know if is only for track use but you will still have a couple of hundred quid to spend to get it back to useable condition and I have seen a few early models go from private owners for less than 3400.

I dont know if he sold it but Matbmx100 (I think) relisted his for 3300 quid about June time, maybe pm him and see if he still has it? If he has, and plans to keep it just ask him again next week. He is as indecisive as a woman so always either selling it or keeping it

Failing that I would get the low mileage one for 3700 on e bay. Flog off all the good panels to get maybe 300 quid back and buy some tatty panels for next to nothing. That way when you come to sell the bike isnt registered Cat D / C whatever and you have the choice to smarten it up for top dollar at the time or pass it on for a bit cheaper than market value as is.

Just my 2 cents
+1 that bike is overpriced by a good £500-800
kk thx guys

they are the most fun to ride , sure there are faster bikes that are going to ping past you on a straight,

but having had both ,there is more fun to be had on the sd
Do they really need anything for the track apart from some crash bungs & a suspension set up?, baring in mind i'm probably only ever gonna be running in the inters at my age/weight
chuck as much money or as little at it as you want,

crash bungs will save you money in the long run.

Yes.

The only thing worth anything on it are the Evo system and the dash.

Everything else is a load of waffle.
Thats a standard rear shock. The H&M tune must be shite coz it's making the same power as my standard motor with cans and a rotty box.

And it looks like its crashed into a gsxr and came off worst.

The £26,000 original build price must have included all the 100's hours labour when the mechanics were rolling about the floor laughing at it
Yeah I was looking at that, it certainly does not look like a factory rear shock to me.

Not worth what they are asking for that, and bet it dont come with original parts either.

Good advice regarding tyres, i've got WoW's for my RSV but if i got a SD, i would just use sportsmarts, save's the expence of tring to get spare wheels, i don't mind riding a wet track day but i dodn't try for mega lap times so SS's would be fine.

Regarding crash bungs, i had a full set on my old SD and i lost it on some gravel only doing 20mph but apart from the bungs nothing else was touched, quite amazed really.

Here's a pic of my old SD

Right decided, gonna pick up SD on saturday
get it done
The deed is done
pictures?.......... well?........Cmon don't leave us all in suspense....

Gimma chance, workin' bloody night shifts all weekend

Just ran it up to the garage for juice this afternoon & a quick blat round local lane's for 1/2 hour, seems ok for a fairly standard bike, just got Akro's & a WP damper, there is a new KTM top yoke fitted to accomodate the damper & you can drop the bars about 20mm by removing spacer's so might do that.
heated grips are all wobbly & feel shite so their gonna go & a need to get some new rubber on, mismatched diablo/sportmax on atm !! Don't fancy them for 2 dayer @ cadwell
would recommend running it for the morning at least before you start dicking about with bars mate . you need to understand how quick these turn in anyway.

load a decent map on it and have a play
Use the time to setup suspension and just ride it first.
Here you go, as i said pretty standard, bar the cans & yoke/damper....

Looks mint, you might want to check one of Viking's topics where he tells all the changes he made to his SD, just for good ideas
Thats a lot of bike for £3250 Sweet.
Been checking out Vikings bike/mods for idea's

Got the bike for 3200 in the end, made a deal about mismatched tyres, i've got a set of racetec scrubs in the garage spare from my RSV but a really need to go for a better allround tyre, with not having spare WoW.

My RSV has 2CT's on atm but i think some1 is gonna look at it 2morrow dinner with a view to buy it, so i don't have time to swop em over. If the RSV goes i'll get new sportsmarts but if he doesn't want it, i'll swop the 2CT's to the SD. Only thing is the rear is 190, so it's gonna be tight with the chain, like it is now on the ape
A 190 rear is going to raise the rear. Make sure you don't have the forks showing through the yokes. Personally I'd push them 5mm into the top yoke with that tyre.
I've went full circle so don't take any notice of old posts of mine.
My bike isn't a million miles away from standard really. It's mostly all chassis geo and suspension stuff but it's not as far removed as you'd think. Without rambling on and on. Very basically mine is sprung right and as a result of the work is overall slightly higher.

Took a massive step forward in which way to go with things after the race weekend. But that was mostly damping and wheelbase stuff.

My 2p is.....
Throw away those risers.
Don't put a 190 on it as it will destroy the chassis geo.
Set those forks flush with top yoke.
Check it's on 16/38 gearing and not the old 17/38
Get out and wheelie the life out it
kk, i'll go for the new sportsmarts then, guy said its running a 16T.
Colin @ 100% is at Cadwell so i think i'll get it booked into him for a set up.
Viking i assume your still running the engine mods, Ramair pods etc?
Colin is great if you've got a K Tech shod sportsbike.

I played dumb at Donny and asked him about setting the bike up and he basically said WP is shit, it cant be worked with and it needs K Tech.

Funny how MCT managed to alter the standard stuff to get it where i wanted and got Dave Woods Battle bike into the 1min 35's at Cadwell.

He obviously knows his shit. He sets up Seb's bike to run in BSB Superstock. The SD is a strange little creature though when you compare it to general sportsbike rules
mmmm, dunno if it's worth it then....

Shame MCT are so far away from me, KAIS is not far but heard mixed reviews on the TDR forum
Hi,

My thoughts about SD as a track bike.

- It can do track quite fast, with couple mods
- There are somethings you cant change in the bike, what makes it not that good track bike (ground clearance)
- It's a great bike to learn how to RIDE, because it doesnt have any aids and its quite unstable compared to sportbikes
- It always crashes nicely
- It's not a smart move if you think it money vise

I have been riding 2008 SD at track for 3 years now (first year it was 2-3 track days, second year 5-6 track days, this year 12-16 track days).. Now riding in a fast group and still learning quite fast I think.

Mods that I have done:

- R&G sliders everywhere
- Akra slipons
- MH airbox + SAS removed + the other basic stuff
- Custom tuned
- Changed brake rotor to powerparts rotor and installed EBC Extreme Pro pads
- Suspension totally rebuild and re-valved two times now
- Stiffer front and rear springs
- Puig windscreen
- LSL streering damper, dragbar, levers
- Stomp grip side panels
- PP-tuning rear sets
- HM quickshifter
- STM slipper clutch
- Dunlop D211 GP Soft in front and 190/55 medium rear
- 16/41 sprockets
- Sag with rider + riding gear on front 35mm rear 30 mm

And probably something else also.. Now the bike feels perfect.. except one f*ck*ng thing that annoys me alot.. ground clearance.. what have people done to that? Nichols TC seems to only mess the geometry up in standard SD bikes. I liked how the 190/55 rear tyre changed the behavior of the bike.. the only thing im missing is the ground clearance because engine is scraping on the ground

I will post a video from last weekend ride when its uploaded.

Looks something like that..

Somehow I read "will 16-40 still give me a 140+ top speed", that's why I sent the link
Maybe I just need to change the riding style more.. already tried that at last sunday, got the same laptimes with less lean. Only hard part is how im going to stay in the bike

Short clip from sunday.

Hey that's awesome ! Can you do that for 16/41 up to 10,000 rpm ... i'm running 16/40 now but need a new chain sprocket set real soon ( 24k on this one ) and am curious about 16/41

Viking knows what he's talking about, especially the fact suspension is very personal and needs to suit your riding style.

For now I'm done setting up my 07 with front sags 27 and 39mm, rear sags 6 and 30mm and forks 1mm through the yoke.
I like a bike a bit tilted forward and I try to get a lot of drive out of corners so I had to use relatively much rebound to keep it from sliding front and rear.
It tends to steer a bit sharp and sometimes a little hard and unstable with normal riding but everything falls in place when riding balls-out. The ride gets smoother and grip seems to increase the more speed it carries.
I move my body around a lot to set the bike upright quickly and I'm sure someone with a completely different style wouldn't like my setup that much so it's a process you should find out for yourself.

Had a bit of a fiddle 2day, balanced TB's, removed 2nd flys (left the shafts for now) fitted RC8 trumpets, found out bike has a DNA filter in, so thats cool, set sag & put the rest of the settings to sport, dropped the forks so their flush, removed the heated grips and found some bar ends kicking about in the garage that fit.

Just got to have a play with a TuneECU map, probably use the smoothed Akro map

Only problem is that one of the fork rebound adjusters clicks but spins for ever, obviously something is amiss but havn't got time to strip the fork before cadwell so gonna have to live with it, for now
