I just use the key since you have to turn it off at the key sooner or later. I don't think there's an advantage either way just personal preference.
FWIW: Owners manual says use key, as switch is for emergency use only....

I use 'the force'! Yoda gave me it when I went to visit last week. Before that I had convinced my bike's ecu that I was Chuck Norris & if it didn't back down I would roundhouse kick it into submission!

I suppose you could use a rag into the air tube?

Or run it til you use up all the fuel, should take about 10 miniutes! Including your ride!
