Ok guys,. I have to come clean...

I love my SDR to bits, but I keep looking at bikes from the likes of Roland Sands and Kott, and the Jesse Rooke KTM LC8, and even ooogling the new Norton Commando... and I like these timless butch machines that are little more than an engine, tank, seat and wheels...

I'd love a retro attitude bike that handled like an SD, with looks that were timless, not retro or modern... and the SD is after all a simple V-twin in a trellis frame... a great starting point for a nasty streetbike with backstreet brawler looks...

I did this cut'n'paste pic (below) in about 5 mins at work (using Word, LOL) but I wanted to see how an old style SD (I prefer the shape of the tank) would look with carbs and header tank from a 950SM, spoked wheels, no rear panels, a low exhaust and simple slimline headlight... Am I sick, or perhaps inspired? I reckon it's do-able (as a second bike of course)... Think of it as Eric Buell working for KTM.

I think the basic problem with this concept is the design of the SD is MODERN, not kind of contemporary-retro like the Commando, so I reckon you could be in danger of doing the bike equivalent of sticking mock Georgian windows and doric columns on your Barrat Homes box.
For this kind of carry on, I think something like a Griso 8v would be a better starting point.
Then again what do I know?...

I like the idea, I think the SD could be a good base for a trick one off, I do like some of the specials that have used the SD, anything can be done if you have the cash.

Personally id rather spend the cash and have the cuto's of the first SDR Big Bore

I agree, I love my SDR to bits and won't mess with that beauty , ...but then I also want a Norton Commando/Thruxton whatsit, ...but then I realise I'd never ride it, cos it's well ghey... and suddenly I want to turn a Superduke into a two-up, girlfriend carrying, city cruiser, with mad max/hell's angels/brutish looks, ...like a Buell XB12 that doesn't melt your legs or shift like a tractor.

Dutch,

Your not crazy. I get it. I fell in love with the SD back in 2003 or 2004 when I saw it naked in a preview-review. I don't care for the looks of the bike dressed but I like the trellis frame, big dirt bike engine, massive forks, and no linkage rear. It is basically my dream platform. So the rest isn't perfect, It will get there over time.

Think of just cutting the BS off the bike, and it will kind of build itself.
The rear side panels do nothing for the bike, and make standing on the pegs uncomfortable. Enduro style headlight gets rid of the huge thing on the front. The factory taillight is ugly as well, room for improvement. Low single pipe gets rid of the stink on the leathers and probably will cut weight,( I have my old Ti Akra from the 640 to go on when I can find a cheap header to chop). I agree on the fuel tank and have a few ideas. The oil tank/battery situation is the way it is for handling, but a small battery could be put in front of the Moto-box or under the seat and leave room for a SE/SM oil tank in place of the old battery. The wheels are nice but not necessary and will end up adding weight, ( I want a set of 18"-19", single disk for some dirtier conditions).

What would be left is a lean, mean and not over stylized. Murdered out or a nice orange frame, either way I think it would be the tits.

Yeah mate. Like Etuna says, you'll need clip-ons for that full retro cafe racer look. Would be very cool too. Great project, good luck.

Remove the rear quarter panels, showing the subframe... It looks good... Someone did it on here before... Then thin up the seat to match. Clip ons are a must and lower the headlight to match the tangent line of the tank. Wish I had photo shop still and would show u what I mean

Dutch, Ifyou want to get back to old school, ditch the gas tank and get a custom made aluminium tank. Spoke wheels are a pain in the b-hind to clean and are heavy. Paint you wheels silver. I have seen pictures of SD's stripped to look like flat track bikes and really like the look, but I live on the other side of the pond from you. Grendel saw a picture of a featherbed replica frame made specifically to fit the Aprilia Rotax motor. He tucked the radiator under the seat and made it look like a traditional Cafe Racer.

When Grendel saw it he thought it would be greatly improved by the addition of the superduke motor.

i like the back swinging arm and the rear wheel i put a 996 one on my martex they look the dogs but wear do you stop i was thinking about the swinging arm mod on my new sdr but that will be a winter job me thinks if i even go down that road but the pipe looks the nuts & i bet it sound ace

Will, You have hit on the one combination which makes the mighty Grendel's knees quake. The Vincent is the original Hooligan. That motor is pure sex. There is not one line that does not seduce the eye. All that and the power it made was (and still is) amazing! You must write up a ride report. That machine is beautiful and Grendel is envious of your friend.
