Single Exhaust

I started a thread here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=22084 , about this subject and mentioned a few other projects as well.

...but since there were a few inquisitions, I was thinking it probably should be broken down to more specific conversation/questions/interest in a direct thread/subject. And, since there's no real dedicated thread to "mod's", I'm still using Hooliganism as the general forum thread.

This is a the first attempt I made at a solo (or single) exhaust. I loved the looks of the stock under-tail dual pipes on the day that I purchased my bike. But, from the moment I took off that monster muffler and realised how heavy it was(22 lbs!), I knew it was coming off.

Unfortunately, this set-up was WAY louder than I could live with. I didn't know much about exhaust flow dynamics at the time, so I opted to just start over with a proven silencer and go for a lower, leaner approach (pic's coming soon in "Second Attempt")

This is the mock-up of my Second Attempt. The can is a shorty Leo Vince for a single exhaust GSXR1000. It had the DB insert option (and I needed it!). Not as loud as the first attempt, but too loud in wide open. The LV DB killer worked great and brought the noise levels down to actually lower than I wanted ... and did not hurt the SOP performance feel at all. I wound up doing a 2,000 mile road trip with my son (who was also on a 2008 Superduke except with his own custom Scorpion under-seat arrangement)) out to Miller Motorsports for the WSB races last year on this set-up and maybe another 1,000 miles as well. But, the heel clearance and track clearance were bothering me, so it was back to the drawing board for a more compact and tucked in arrangement (see Third Attempt... coming soon).

I would go single if I didn't have the full akra system right the way through. Has it effected the performance at all?

Thanks for posting this. Looking forward to seeing version three!

I want to know where/how you joined the low silencer to the standard exhaust system and whether it left the exhaust system un-modded or whether you had to do a non-reversible cut/weld?

Yes, I was looking at the set up yesterday so know what you mean and where you cut. I suspected as much.

My dilemma is that I have a full titanium system fitted on and sold the original exhaust years ago. I really don't want to cut and modify the this system so will look around for a set of Akra stainless steel headers to build the project around. Also don't really want to get into having to fabricate any new exhaust from titanium. like you say, this projects isn't so much about getting maximum horsepower, it's more about aesthetics. I don't mind losing a bit of HP as long as I can get it mapped for smoothness.

Also on my success criteria is that I want the bike to be track compatible so the end result must come in at about 93 decibels maximum otherwise I'll be unable to ride at Brands Hatch.

How close to the swing arm did your extended single pipe run and what was the diameter in that place? (I'm thinking about ground clearance here)

And I see that you trialed using the rearset to mount the silencer onto. Is this what you ended up with? If so does it vibrate a lot through your feet or cause any other issues worth mentioning?

And please pay no attention to that rear tyre, it's a spent 208RR that has served me well. I've been using it up as a 'burn-out dyno' while trying to get my PCV/Autotune set There's a brand spankin' new set of BT-016's hanging out in the shop just waiting their turn

Really nice job. You've inspired me to continue with my own plans for a future incarnation of my bike.

I've really run out of things to do so want to create a completely different retro/cafe racer style. Exhaust was a big issue because underseat pipes wouldn't be right but the next big thing is the tank. Got to find a different tank without the spoilers. Ideally it would be a big, custom aluminium tank but I've got a hunch that the RC8 tank will fit with some mods to the mounting brackets and this would accommodate clip-ons better and yet still retain the overall KTM angular aesthetics.

Now everyone will be after a set of Akra headers!!

+1 on that! Both on the nice job and inspiration to do something different.
I was contemplating selling the SD a while back but it is really the bike I don't want to sell.
Now that I have another new toy in the form of a AC/DC tig welder I can get on with making bits that I previously had to contract out or forget about.
From some of my old post you can see that I had a single can before but under the seat. It worked ok but didn't look that great so when the carbon burned out I took it off.
I might have another go soon.

I have access to a cnc router to cut aluminium sheet, so a tank might be possible in the future Bic.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Found this on the web while doing some research. Not really my cup-o-tea, but impressive none the less...
