Smoke from exhaust and low oil pressure

Hi guys.

First post here, so please be gentle...

Last week picked up a brand new 2010 white and black SDR.
Started riding and, considering the fuel level was very low, went straight to the fuel station. When I go there (perhaps after riding 10 miles at the most, probably less), there was smoke comming out of the exhaust.
I thought that it would probably because the bike (exhaust) was new.

So after riding a little more, at exactly 15 miles the oil light came on.
I stopped the bike, turned it off.
The smoke was still comming out from the exhaust.
Oil light never turned off.
Called dealer, dealer came pick up bike.

First question: is this smoke thing normal? Dealer talked to the importer and they said it was, since the exhaust is brand new.

Second question:
On the tube on the left side of the engine where you can check the oil level, the level was over the top.
So that means that the oil was almost all in the reservoir and the engine itself was starving for oil.
After cooling down, the oil came to the right level. I asked the dealer if the bike had lost any oil, they said no, the level came back to where it was when they delivered the bike to me (meaning the smoke from the exhaust supposedely is not oil burning).
The question itself: has this happened to anyone? What could be the reason?

Thanks in advance for any help.
Much appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about the oil level when you stopped the bike. Mine is often right to the top as well when the bike is running. If you look in the manual you will see that when you check the oil level after a oil change you follow this.

Start bike and let warm to 4 bars.
Allow to tick over for 30secs
turn off and then wait 30 secs, then check oil level with bike upright. It might be 60 not 30 secs but you get the drift.

Guys, thanks again for all the friendly help.

Regarding the oil level, what leaves me apprehensive is the fact that it remained at that level (way over the max mark, in fact you couldn't even see the top of the oil) for at least 15 minutes.

I stopped the bike immediately and waited for the dealer to come pick me up.
It remained like that for all that time.
When he got there, it was still the same.

Japanviking, that is very interesting info.
I am sorry for my ignorance, but I am portuguese and some words can have several different meanings.
For me, a switch is something like what you use to turn on and off the lights on the ceiling of a house.
So what exactly is an oil switch?
I assume it's the switch that turns the oil pressure warning light on and off.
Is this correct?
And where is it located?

Thanks.

The oil pressure switch (the sensor that detects low oil pressure) can be seen on the left side of the bike (when sat on it) screwed into the rear of the front cylinder head with a single wire coming off it.

If you have a look at page 20 of the engine parts manuel it is part 33.

My 08 SDR had problem with the oil light coming on I read somewhere on here that there was no clearance between the sensor on the cylinder head and the frame. A quick bit of bending to give clearance problem solved never happened since.

Does anybody know the part number of the oil pressure switch on an 08 SD? I can't seem to find it online.
