So what's the downside of "R" ownership?

I have not ridden the SDR in fear I will hate the power deficit of my SD.
I think for the few dollars, euros, quid more, you get a lot more bike for the difference in cost with the SDR.
You will spend much more cash chasing HP with the standard.
Probably will with the SDR, anyway.
BTW, rectal prolapse just softens the ride with those extra grapes hanging back there.

#11I've a vstrom 1k sitting next to the SDR.
The SD is a better street ride than the SDR. I've ridden 'em back to back, on the track, and street.
I can't ride the SDR in a sane manner on the street. YMMV.
( I still keep plates on it.)
The strom runs a penske shock, re valved& re-sprung forks. No motor work and will kick any GS butt I've yet to encounter.

#23I had the single seat already, so that was no surprise, but it does need an aftermarket seat or recover to make it bearable for longer rides.
I also changed the front springs to softer items, as it's too firmly sprung for riders under about 85kg (dry), and it's made the bike much nicer around town, and better on track too, so a worthwhile mod for anyone wincing and weighting the pegs every time they see a pothole coming up.
Go for it.

#30Seriously, though, the only draw back for me is the mono-posto thing. There are times when I want to throw the sheila on the back and go for a spin to Pink's hotdogs or Tommy's or something, and, well, we can't (especially now that I sold my R1100S...). The Ape is similarly mono-posted, so we have to drive on date night. Oh well. Very much worth it!
I'm ordering up some FMF Apex', thinknig hard about the 'box and secondaries, and definitely going to do the Tune ECU thing. I've "become accustomed" to the throttle snatchiness, but I imagine the Motobox and TuneECU/FMF's will help that a bit.
You can't go wrong either way, but I will repeat myself: we don't buy these bikes to be rational OR responsible...
