Yes this SDR experience was my favorite in racing. Of all the bikes I have raced, hands down. Strange right? Must be that we created so much with this bike, where all the others you just buy parts and go race. The ram-airbox, the swingarm, the triple clamps, the belly pan, the rear ride height adjuster. All great improvements, and all came from the imagination. As hard as the SDR was to race in the beginning, it actually became one hell of a bike near the end. You can hear the tranny in the video. Dam that thing was cooked. Actually wasn't gears, it was the shift fork. Same thing used to happen on the Ducatis. Likely my fault. Before we had an electronic shifter I used to weight the shifter and use the rev-limiter. Not the healthiest way to get shifts done but when your'e down on power you need all the tricks in the book working for you. My plan for the last lap of that race was to push up his inside in the left just after the corkscrew. Would have scared the crap out of him, nobody passes there. If you watch you can see I was practicing in the previous laps. I needed to be real close to him over the corkscrew to pull it off so I was pushing extra hard through turns 3 and 4. That's where I lost the race, I ran wide out of turn four - had to crack off the gas just for a tick then get back in it. That crushed our momentum. My mistake. I was shit through that turn every lap. Easy turn, but it had me beat all race. It's killing me I want to do that again so bad..
Best our SDR dyno'd at was 118hp. The motor was actually bone stock. I know everyone in racing says that, but in this case it is true. I would love to race the SDR again against the 600 and 750 superbikes we have out here. It'd be awesome with ten more hp. I know nothing about hp mods on these bikes.
The reason I don't have the bike done yet is it's not mine, yet. The shop still owes money on it, even though it's a pile of broken parts right now. I was hoping they would sell it to me real cheap, since it's a pile and all, but no dice. I'll be lucky if I get it for 5k, which is kind of out of line for a wreck but I understand. Money is money. That's why I am actively looking for a wrecked SDR. Maybe a salvage title bike. This way I can use the street parts to help the shop create a streetable/sellable chassis - then I can have what's left to build an SDR for the track again. Only this time it'd be mine...
FYI, if anyone cares about our progress with the SDR's bigger brother, I grabbed the reigns of the design and paint this winter. Bike looks beautiful. I used HMC's RC8R as a guide, I love how their bike looked last year.
