Sport touring tyres

How do people feel about using sport touring tyres on the superduke?

More specifically pirelli angel sts. But does anyone have any experience in using any sport touring tyres?

I only really ride road (although I may try get a trackday in this year) and so I feel it's not really worth me going for track focused tyres and I also do a fair few road miles and so sone longer lasting tyres would be nice.. However my road riding (private roads officer) is quite fast and does involve the occasion knee drag and I pass through a roundabout and a few wheelies in safe places so what do u guys think?

I've heard getting sport touring tyres is actually better for roads because of the tyres not getting upto track temps but others say if your fast u need sticky tyres?

I never tried Angels on my SD, but my Tuono came with them and used them for about 800 miles now, I have dragged both knees with them, they dont tip in as fast as a Supersport tyre, have had the front tuck slightly and the rear step out on the Angels, but not had any issues since I changed to an Ohlins rear.

I would not buy a set of angels and I will be taking the Angels shortly to replace for some Metzeler Interact K3's eben though the front is pretty much brand new and the rear has loads of tread.

Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa, they have 2 compound tech, K2 (medium) rubber on the edges and a harder compound in the middle, I was going to give them a bash, but changed my mind.

Im running Michelin Power Pure's very impressed and they seem to be wearing very well even riding 2up

Sounds like I ride mine a lot like you ride yours.

I have just fitted a pair of Diablo Rosso Corsa's and did 650+ miles over the last few days on seriously twisty roads as well as a full fat 40 mile close to insane blat that pushed the tyres as hard as a track day in places.

I don't know about durability yet but all I can say is that they are outstanding in feel and grip. Even riding like an idiot I have not had a single tyre induced moment, not one. They are the best tyres I have ever ridden on and that includes pretty much all the "race" focused rubber people use on raod bikes.

I can't overstate how good they are on the SD and I will be replacing this pair with another when the time comes.

Hope that helps.

I used Dunlop Roadsmarts on California Race School. In the wet and dry, road and track. Brilliant. No one came past me on track (except the instructors!). Great tyres. Read the reviews. Mind you now seriously looking at Pilot 3's. 

I've been running pirelli diablo stradas for almost a year and they're great all round tyres, good grip in wet, front feels a bit vague when pushed hard sometimes but its tolerable (possible more suspension issue than tyre).
I use my bike as a commuter often and scratcher/hooligan on the weekend and I need more than 3 to 5K kms out of a set to make the budget happy. I got 12K out of the strada front and about 8 to 9K out of the rear.
My tyre guy recommends me changing to Bridgestone BT023s based on how i ride so i'm going to give them a try next.
He also said the Stradas are a better tyre than the Angel ST but Pirelli are phasing them out in favor of the Angel.

Read a review on them a few weeks back, here it is:

I've never heard of a "sport touring" tyre.

Shade and Twisted Jester used to love Angels. They give great millage and pretty amazing grip considering how long they last. I followed Jester round Lydden Hill, we weren't hanging about and I admit I was just waiting for him to lowside it the way he was cranking the bike over but they stayed stuck to the tarmac. I use either Power Pures or Racetec now but have to admit for road riding I am tempted to try Angels because I'm sick of only getting 2k miles at best out of a rear

couldnt take the rear wearing out at 2-2500 miles, went with the Roadsmart rear and Q2 front.

Great combo so far, should wear out about same time. No trackday yet...

I've got angels on mine and I can't fault them.
I only use my bike for mountain scratching and they feel solid ,even when it gets a bit rough.

With my Ducati shop managers (and a active racer) blessing I have been running various sport-touring rear tyres with brand-matched sport-spec front tyres as a good compromise. I just can't live with 2500 mile rear tyres when I ride 10K a year. I believe the industry has sold us too much tyre for street riding, and I wouldn't hesitate to do a track day with this combination either. Currently Pilot Road and Dunlop Roadsmarts on various bikes in my garage.

Cheers for all the replies guys.

Seems like i either risk trying the Angels (and from the sounds of things ill probably be ok on them)

or i just stop being tight and go with either Mitchelin Pures or Pirelli Rooso Corsas and just buy a couple of rears more than i would on the Angels.

Cheers again for the replies

Right now I am using Michelin "sport touring" tyres and I like them...they seem to suit my riding style and they sure do last a lot longer than regular "sport" tyres.

Just ordered a set off these new Pilot Road 3's. Supposed to be ace in the wet. Corsa 3's slip every ride! No confidence in em. 

are the Pilot Road 3's the ones that Bike magazine spunked all over recently? with the sipes? they'll be what I try next, but at the moment I can't fault my Angel STs

Cheers guys, been doing some research and after reading the thread i found on here about the Angels its going to be between these and the Pilot Road 3s

I can get the Angel ST for £190 delivered as opposed to the Pilot Road 3s which i can get for £225 delivered.

Seems like a big difference in price £35 (that will pay for fitting and half a tank of fuel)

But i do like the idea of a duel compound tyre (pilot road 3) as i think it would help the tyre to wear more evenly (and according to mitchelin last longer) as opposed to mono compound on the Angels.

I know im making a big deal about this but stuff like this drives me mad!

Road Pilot 3's arrived today. Wheels are off, down to Bristol tomorrow to have em fitted. Hope to get a few dry miles to scub em in before we see just how good they are in the wet. Last Michelins I had were Macadams in 1996, truely horrible tyres. Hope these live up to the hype

Anyone running a tyre like the Road 3's or Road 4's? I'm coming off a well used set of Pilot Power 3's and looking to change to something with a bit more life to it this go around. I'm not stuck on Michelin's so interested in other brands.

Goals are a tyre with a long center life but sides with some grip similar to even a standard Pilot Power. I don't run the chicken strips to 0 so I'd prefer the extra grip to be on more than the last CM of the tyre edges.

EDIT: What the hell does this forum automatically change my spelling of t1re? Silly europeans haha

I have a set of the new Metzeler M7RR here waiting to wear out the Dunlops on my '16. My '17 Duke 690 came with them (but a 160 rear), and I really enjoyed those. They are also the standard tyre this year on the SDR, (I think I heard that).

EDIT: naw. You are not looking for this kind of a tyre. Sorry about suggesting this one. Its emphasis is more on performance and less on slow wear.

Try a set of Roadtec 01s, great tyres, on my 1290GT, the Angels lasted 5500Ks, the next set of M7RRs lasted 3500Ks, great tyre, plenty of grip, but just wore out too fast, so now i have fitted the roadtecs, and so far i really like them, the steering feels light and neutral, i have now fitted them on my Multistrada, it had a part worn set of PR4s, (1200Ks) i just wasn't happy with the feel of them, so off they came and on went the Roadtecs, and same neutral light steering feel. Its actually great having the same rubber on both bikes now.

My '08 990SD came to me with a Pilot Road 2 on the front and a Pilot Road 3 on the rear.
They feel really planted and trustworthy. I will be replacing the rear with same I think, or the newer Pilot Road 4.

I used a rear road 2 some years ago and happy.

You can run really fast with this type of tyres, i remenber a friend on his s1krr with metzeler z8....you can imagine

Google Youtube, 2016 sports touring tyre test. It may surprise you with the results, their least like tyre was the PR4 and last in the 5 tyre test, (rated 78%) pretty good, but their top rated tyre and favourite rated 98%

Just checked out that video and read the comments...
Metzeler are owned by Pirelli, and Pirelli sponsored the test.. I'm ok with that.

Only the PR4 GT's tested and not the normal PR4's...
Yet they managed to included 2 different Metzeler tyres...

I've no doubt they are a good tyre but I sense at least a little bias in that test.
