stiffened swingarm (slightly unconventional)

Gents,

this one is a bit different but I have also been thinking about a swingarm brace made out structural carbon fibre (friend at toowoomba makes the carbon parts for the redbull F1 team and stone brothers race team amongst others)

the plan is it would look like this but with carbon and would be bonded to the swingarm in the same way that is used in all motorsports (think stupidly strong glue)... probably looking similar to below

now the big ask... has anyone got a spare (and true) swingarm that I could borrow to start taking demensions and model up in brisbane or SE QLD?

Cool idea, even if just for the styling. I doubt an improvement in performance would be noticed by a mere mortal though.

The AWESOMER thing to do would be to fit an RC8 swingarm on a SD I wish I had the..... [time, money, experience, knowledge, good looks, motivation, shop, skills, machinery, tools] to pull that off!

RC8 arm won't fit

Gogo braced one for his race bike and did say it was better at getting the power down earlier.

I managed to borrow one of Millar for bracing but the 2 companies I was told would be up to it haven't answered my emails.

I've wondered about a swingarm an inch longer..Maybe take care of some of the twitchiness..

Getting mine done in Ali but I could be persuaded to rip the swingarm off my daily and get that done...
I'd be nice to compare handling... Maybe I should buy you that swingarm off eBay MrZ, and just swap em when you're done

Actually.

It was mine.

I thought of it back in the "Moto Martin" days of frame enhancement.

And realised that KTM did not exsist and Carbon fibre didn't either.

But Loh !!it does and it does.

Love my "fecked up" Time machine.

Actually? It was more than likely "Metchamex"

I always get them two, mixed up.

yep back in those days stiffer was better..........not so today (ask Ducati .......3 new frames and still counting) not too sure why we would want a laterally stiffer swinging arm in the first place?

The Carbon Fibre add on to the standard unit will only ever be as strong as the bond between them.......

IF....we need torsional stiffness a welded option would always be preferable

lastly, for those who think i am doing this to make money... that is not the case. Once i have modeled it up and had the molds made (at my cost) it will be available through my friends shop where they can knock them out and sell directly. Mine will just be the initial R&D vehicle. I will post up their details shortly so you can see their website

I think it would be a lot cheaper to get JMC to build a braced swing arm from scratch. 4 weeks lead time and about £400 for a braced swing arm in alloy.
Plus you can build in uber cool chain adjustment/ wheelbase alteration.
BTW I fear glueing CF to a structure that has a tendency to flex sounds fraught with problems to me. plus the mating surfaces aren't that large or regular.

Well the bike is finished and I hopefully will have it next week...
Here are the pics I have been sent of the swingarm.
I've looked at JMC but due to robbery, he is still out of action.

Nice job mate

This is exactly what I was going to do to my spare swingarm when I have the time - based on pictures of Go-go's race bike from a few years ago. Was there any need to put the swingarm in a jig to keep it true whilst welding? Do you have any drawings of the parts pre welding or was it just done sort of freehand and by eye?

I've been thinking about legthening the swingarm...and it's effects..
Trying to get rid of the twitchiness..Last time I mentioned it some
think it wouldn't be a Superduke then..and like it that way...
I'm not to that point of flexing it yet..Or would I even feel it...
but I think smooth is better...right.???
It goes with the Nichols products...THey're there for a purpose...
I'm in the process of learning here..with all of it...
It takes time...
