The man is a good motogp rider, get 2 tittles ( maybe 3 with this season ) and has done some good races but to call it the best in the world after Doohan for me it's a long way...maybe top 5 streched yes ( but Agostini, Schwantz, Roberts sr., Eddy Lawson, Doohan and Rossi are rightful contenders no??? )

Doohan as won Superbike Races, Endurance Suzuka race and a hand full of 500cc championships.

Stoner has an 8th and 5th with the 125cc, a second with the 250cc and 2 world championships with the 4strokes.

Rossi has 9th and 1st with the 125cc, 2nd and 1st with the 250cc, champion with the 500cc, multi champion with the 4 strokes ( championship results are: 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, , 1st, 1st, 3rd, 7th and 6th ) and still has gas to go for it and not whine about how the sport has changed

I have no trouble with him winning, but it's only going to be the third time he's so much faster then everyone else...let's see how the year goes by.

The word GOAT to describe How well someone does is presuming the world is to end before someone else surpasses the accomplisment. Rossi is by far and away the greatest promoter and rider in the MotoGP history to date. In all, I watch sport for it's accomplishments on the field, not how well a character performs in front of a microphone. I watch motosport for more than race results. Athletesism in any endevoure brings about such a strong responce of excitement, it matters not if the task is followed by a bumbling bafoon bitching bout backmarkers or an elequant elaboration espousing extraordinary effort.
Stoner has talent on track that is matched by few and far between, his retirement from racing will leave a void in my viewing for years to come.
The shear pleasure of watching him enter and exit turn four at Laguna Seca in what would be the absolute most spectacular fashion, leaves me wondering if that cornering prowess will not be my GOAT view of racing.
I wonder if he needs me to build him a new house?

If this season continues in it's current vien, Stoner will retire with a amazing win / podium to race starts ratio in the premier class.

The other thing that should be observed: Most of the riders mentioned in this thread were nearly always on the best machinery for the majority of the time. Quite clearly - that is not the case for Stoner.

I think when Rossi said he cannot ride the Duc the way Stoner rides it is completely true. During the last race practice sessions you can see Stoner whip the bike around like nothing with crazy amounts of chatter coming out of the turns. He biffed it once, then later on the same day posted the second fasted lap of the day. When Rossi rides the Duc around, its like he babies the bike, keeps it super smooth and easy. But, when the rain came in and Rossi felt he had a chance, then he started whipping the bike around making Stoner look like a sissy boy in some of the later turns. I don't know what is better for developing a bike for the future. Have someone like Rossi who has the talent to ride at the absolute edge when he needs to, but babies the bike around to work out as many improvements as possible, or have a rider like Stoner who is always balls out and compensates for a shitty ride. When Stoner pulls into the pits and complains about chatter, its like yeah ok you won, we'll get to it eventually. When Rossi pulls in and says I can't ride this thing, fix it, all hell breaks loose until they fix it or else.

Was the piece of shit Yamaha that Rossi used to win the very first race he competed in, the same bike that Max tucked into just about every corner on the circuit?
Was the most compitition against Rossi the year before he signed with Yamaha a Yamaha?
If it is stated that the best bike was not used to win championships, was the rider who won the championship swearing up and down that he won on his merits, it was not the superior bike and teamwork he possesed?
Did Ducati tell the world they only won because of Stoner, like Honda told the world it was Rossi and Rossi alone that allowed them bragging rights.
Please people, dislike Stoner till the cows come home, throw roses at Rossi's feet, but when you speak about racecraft don't spoil the measure of a mans might on track.

I don't think anyone is denying Stoner can ride a bike. But slagging off Rossi is ridicules. The guy has 9 world titles to his name. He is down as an all time great. Stoner can ride a bike he really can. I do enjoy watching him slide a bike round corners but he's getting out too early to be held up there as an all time great IMO.
