#6Damn - already on the Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casey_Stoner)... at the ripe old age of, what, 27? Very possible he'll go out a champion.
I have to say, I don't really care what his public "persona" is - not like I know the guy personally. Perhaps his sponsors care ... he is an entertainer (that's really what his job is), but I contend that its done on the racetrack, and what he's paid for. His results there speak for themselves.
BTW - Are threads never merged here?

#7I'm not really surprised, read an interview in a Dutch mag about a year ago. He said something like: i don't get why guys like Rossi keep going every year, i am not planning on doing this as long as them.
So not really surprising.
I tought he was doing one more year after this and then retire. Maybe the baby speeded it up.

#11As a father of children I completely understand his decision. Family makes you re-assess you priorities and the MotoGP life is not conducive to family life.
As a watcher of bike racing I will not miss him in the slightest. He's the most boring, no-personality, dull, lifeless, winging twat that has ever been part of GP racing and the whole series will be much more entertaining without him.
Bye bye boring person. Go off and bore some other people. I will forget you instantly. You might have talent at riding bikes but I follow bike racing and identify with riders for something more than you can possible have to offer.
My opinion is that he has no future in PR/television/commentary etc. Most producers will be running a mile if his services were offered. With a bit of luck we'll never have to see him again.

#12Why did Super Sic have to leave us so early He had the talent and the personality. I would and did tune in to watch him race. MotoGP needs personalities like that.

#13This is a great loss to MotoGP, but what about other motorcycle racing. Will he continue in another series ? He doesn't like the technical direction the prototypes are taking.
My bet is he will give up bikes to come home to Australia to have a go at racing V8 Supercars. I beleive he had a test in one late last year and went OK.
Wayne Gardiner did the same thing when he retired from the bikes. Another towering personallity, he soon got up everyones nose and didn't last very long in that game.

IF Ducati were pissed off with him, then more fool them. He gave them their only MotoGP title on a bike evryone else struggled with. They thought bringing Rossi in was a masterstroke, for fans and sponsers. All it did was expose how brilliant Casey is, and how poor their bike was.
He is young, financialy made for life, has a hottie for a wife and a young kid.
I'd rather see him carry on winning in MotoGP, but if he wants to go and enjoy life then good luck to him.

On a serious note, I grew up in a sport where parents pushed their kids. A lot of the kids hated it and jacked in as soon as they were old enough to say No to the old man. No money in Judo but the parents would have made significant financial contribution to getting the kid to a high level in a sport he / she didnt really want to be in.
At least Stoner stuck it out long enough to reach the pinnacle of his sport, repay the investment and hopefully, have enough put by for the rest of his life. People die racing motorbikes so if he gets out at 27/28 alive, relatively uninjured, wealthy and without regrets I guess that is the best possible outcome.

#18The dates they show for summer bike trackdays are 26/5, 23/6, 21/7, 1/9, 22/9 all on Saturdays. I will be trying to get to most of those now I have my bike back

#21This is not new news I read a interview that his father done a while back and he said that Casey would retire well before he turned 30.
Rumour has it that he may race V8 Supercars back in Australia as he was seen doing a few laps in the team Vodafone car, Wayne Gardner tried this also but was not real successful.

#22It's great that he can go out on top like he is, but really I think he'll get the itch to do some sort of racing in the near future. He is kinda whiny, but he still is the best on the grid that's currently racing. This will make for an extra silly season after this year is over. I'd imagine the teams are going to be quite different next year.

#23MOTOGP is incredibly hard to do for ten years. The stress he put on himself was enormous. The personality thing is really overblown due to Rossi vs. (whomever is the latest foil or villian) like how everyone has to fight in "reality programming". For once you have a smart healthy happy guy at the top of his game calling it quits on HIS terms. Why would anyone put that down as a negative for anyone? Many riders have had the lactoce and/or balance issues from infections. I grew up getting a little glimpse of Roberts and Lawson, Roberts charmed no one, but he sure changed to game for the good of the show! Safety became a serious issue finally. I never had a fonder moment than when those magnificent machines (MotoGP) fired up for practice at Laguna Seca, for the first time. The buzz on the track was never replicated in my 4 years of working the race.

#24I say good luck to him. I seen over the last few years that he hasn't been enjoying as much (possibly due to his other half's input), but if he feels that it is the correct time to do it then so be it.

#28So far so good. Have done my 50 miles to run it in and spent Sunday running around with a new Tuono and an RSV4. Given the roads we were on, none of us got much about 120 for very long but there was lots of short bursts of full throttle between twisty bits and the SDR certainly felt faster than it was. The before and after Dyno readouts showed a 10bhp gain after 7000rpm and no losses before.
My costs were about 100 quid for top and base gasket, 300 quid for Bob Farnham and Tagg only wanted 400 quid for doing the work, plus changing a set of grips, MOTing the bike and before and after dyno runs. I offered him a bit more to cover the odds and ends of specialist tooling but he wouldnt take it. Total 800 quid for 10bhp gain. I have got to be happy with that
Yesterday I ordered a 170 rear spring and once it arrives I will get the rear shock serviced. Then I am done until I get tempted by a full system or a Rizoma number plate hanger appears on e bay.
My EXC is sold and I am selling off the bits for it and my off road kit next. So could be an RC8 and new road leathers or an RSV4 on my horizon. Most likely a cheap RC8 that I can chuck carbon wheels at.

#30motomatters is my go to site for articles pertaining to Moto GP. They have good write ups and thoughtful and polite commentary afterwords.
I fully enjoyed that write up and thought it hit the nail on the head about the whole of the Casey situation.
