Thinking of moving to Melbourne...how are the twisty roads

Thinking of moving from USA to Melbourne, Australia area. How is the twisty road situation? Is there a "sportsbike" culture, with a cafe or 2 where folks get together on certain days/nights, and twisty roads within an hour or so from Melbourne? How about racetracks for some practice days, and vintage racing? Would be bringing 2 SD and many Euro vinrtage cafe racers.

But.....lack of twisties and riders would put Melbourned out of the running. I'd be open to other Australian suggestions though....but not Perth, been there, too hot for me in the summer.

brisbane is the place to be , some of the best rides and its hot even in winter, a good jacket dosent hurt but.... great culture of cafe's, pubs and a good varitey of bikes, cops arnt to bad and i'd be happy to take you for a tour of the mountains, and there is 3 local tracks.... If you can keep up

Dont know what the bike scene is like in Melbourne (pronounced Melbin) but it sure has some great rides not too far from town and definitely some cracking overnighters. So anywhere there is good roads there is bound to be a scene and Melbourne is the café capital of Oz.
Some downsides I can think of are a 100 km/h limit, unforgiving cops and changing weather.
Yep dont bother with Perth.

The bike scene is awesome in Melbourne with heaps of rides, pubs and circuits. I used to do a loop out from dandenong over the mountain and up the black spur a couple of time a week and race at the 3 circuits there. The clubby scene is awesome and great support for classics. It IS bloody cold in the winter tho but there are two tracks that stay pretty dry for most of the year as the are on the other side of the mountains. If I could I would still live there for the bike riding but work has pulled me away (plus I'm not sure if I could do the winters anymore!)
I second the Perth comment still a nice place to live tho enduros are more the go over here.

Vic has some great roads not all that far out of melb, come summer i usually organise a few rides myself, about 6 regular guys from melb make the journey down for them, usually quite fast and very twisty. Im about an hour and a half from the city, and getting to my area can be a ride in itself before the main ride, you just have to go the back way. As for race tracks there is broadford: 1 hour drive north of the city, then there is Phillip island the best track in the world (when the weather is good) and winton about 3 hours north of the city.

Think I'll keep an eye on this thread, seeing as I want to emigrate once I finish in the forces (not long to go ).

Did try to transfer to the RAAF and RNZAF a couple of years back, but all recuiting for overseas stopped a while ago. Furthest I got was an interview down in London with RNZAF, they said they'd love to have me but there are no positions for my trade at the mo.

Why give me a frigging interview if they knew there wasn't any openings for my trade? And yes they knew what trade I was beforehand

My Mrs is a Sydneysider and very keen to move back there. Unlimited track days, ride-outs and a garage for my bikes are on the table so far I'm not sure that the speed Nazi police and flies there beat having Cadwell, Brands, Silverstone, Donnington etc on your doorstep, plus getting over to France & Spain for senseless speeding with impunity, yet!

you can speed in australia, its just got a bit more risk to it.
