To Box, Or Not to Box

That is the question.

Alright, so I'm running a DNA filter and Akra map with my SD. It runs very smooth and doesn't run out of steam on the top end like it did with the stock filter. And it whistles and tweets like I'm told the MH Box does. So, I'm somewhat loathe to change it, being of the if it ain't broke, don't fit it mindset. But, curiosity, if nothing else, is tempting me to try the MH Box.

So what say you havers of DNA filters who switched to the MH Box, was it worth it? TIA.
If your bike is already running fine with the stock box and your happy, why change it. With the MH box you will make more power, but youre already happy with what you got.
Depends really. It will make more grunt and it will make it quicker. The noise is a beautiful thing and so it the look. Also makes access a damn sight easier for maintenance. In the end though it's whether you wanna splash out the dosh on your bike.
If you pay for service then you`ll recoup your money in a few services that require the removal of the stock box. If you don`t pay for service, you`ll be happy not having to have remove the stock box for those things that require it.

The minimalist in me loves My MH airbox. Simple access, the way things ought to be.

Sounds right, flows right.

The only reason I can think of for keeping the stock box is not being able to spend the dough to get rid of the stock exhaust to lose the secondary air.
Ordering one this week,,, the ease of maintance alone is worth it,, like Will said "the way it aught to be",,,,
it's worth it for the sound alone! the performance gain and access for maintanace is just a bonus!

Just do it Mike. You have all the other goodies on it. I can't wait to see her once the weather clears and I can make a long ride.
I've and open CF leo's and belive me if i told you i cant hear the leo's since i installed the MH airbox!!

At the same time, i replaced rear sprocket for a 40T and i dont know which upgrade its the responsable but the bike feels like floating, lighter...new bike for me!
There is no reason to not put the motobox on your bike...

There is no way a drop-in filter even comes close to making the same sound as a motobox. The sound it makes at WOT alone is worth the price of admission...it is pure sex.

It just looks right...the stock airbox is f'ing HUGE. Taking it out of there makes the bike look even leaner & meaner...

The extra power doesn't suck at all, either.

JUST GET ONE. You will not regret it.
I had a DNA filtwr and switched. Nothing bad to say about it, gains all over, there is no downside apart from mild cost.
Aren't th power gains fairly minimal though?
Mine gained 4bhp top end and about 4-5nm spread around the middle and top range. It was custom mapped before inhad the box too so if tnwas stock those figures would be higher.

Power is 132 at the wheel and about 78nm i think. Very nice. I was v pleased with gains but more pleased with the fuelling and rideability!

Thanks
I did my Motobox this weekend. Also did the SAS and the O2 elimination. Finally the bike runs smooth in the city...That throttle was driving me crazy.
I just would like to know who was the sadistic engineer that placed that tubing on the way of the bottom screw for the front SAS plate
running akra and sas delete on my SDR. I still have my stock airbox and paper filter. I didn't hesitate spending $600 on new rotors. I would love an MH box but I can't justify the cost. especially with the RC8R coming....

^^ I was thinking the same thing! Were your rotors warped or something?

you didn't tell me you were getting an RC8. when is that coming?
OK John, you might have me there! KTM did take good care of me. Is it my fault they didn't have any standard motors? I'm only human you know! The SDR motor is, well, a nice upgrade! What the Motobox did was to wake it up big time. This bike is fricking awesome now. Smooth, fun factor on high! Should have listened to you sooner on the Motobox John!

I agree, and I do usually stick to one change at a time.

However I was limited to a few track sessions prior to going out to Spain and didn't want to be sodding around there.

It's actually nice to hear of those gains. I didn't pay import duty as the box was already in the UK.

No need for me to upgrade brakes, the P4s on the early bikes are awesome.
Had my 08 SD into the local dealer for some warranty work. I've had this tiny annoying radiator fluid leak which was finally traced to a coupler that goes into the rear cylinder. The KTM regional service tech did the work. Of course, after he wanted to ride the bike to make sure it was OK, yea, right! At any rate, he took it out and came back in about 10 minutes. He said, and I quote..."if every SD was like this one I'd buy one myself". (He rides a 990 Adventure).

Correct on all...stock everything accept the motor is SDR...stock map as well.
Might be time to head down to do a dyno run to see what your bike is putting out and check the AF ratio. Was going to take mine in again to do a pull. How does Friday work for you?

John
Man I'd love to get that done. I'm out of town but nexy week might be a go. I'll give you a hoot and see.

I gave up trying to hold out. ordered the BOX with secondary flys.
Ive got a bit of an objective opinion on this, Ive done the whole airbox mod and yes it gave me more BHP and torque (113 BHP upto 120BHP) and when got on it after getting rid of the airbox my first thoughts were "feck this is quick!!!!" I went for weeks thinking it made a massive difference.........but then I got on a SD with standard box and quickly realised 99% of the massive power increase was all in my head lol I think its mainly down to the noise and a bit more vibration but unless your pushing the bike 100%, normal road riding I didnt think the extra ponies made enough difference to notice!!!!!!!!
