#32the selling point for me was "wow ktm is making street bikes now?" lets see. its got all the performance parts already on it....brembo brakes, radial master cylider, marchenesi wheels, looks freakin wicked, and a v twin. ive never ridin a vtwin. and it has normal handle bars. i can ride it more than an hour and it dosnt buzz me to death. i too come from the high horse inline fours. like you guys, been there done that. the vtwin was the hardest thing to get use to i must say. but know its like second nature. i like my sd so much i went out and bought an adventure. and i must say the adv gets the #1 position in the stable right now.
about the dealer netwwork. the thought never even crossed my mind. screw them. i do all my own work. if i could buy straight from the factory i would. to hell with the middle man stealer.
and im glad not everybody here in the states doesnt ride one. im glad you dont see sd riders wearing a leather vest with a mohak strapped to his helmet. or six foot long swing arms with gleaming chrome wheels.
im very content with my choice. and i let it be known. ive been riding sport bike for 22 years know (im 40) and can honestly my sd is the perfect bike.
not the fastest, not the highest horse power, not the most refined. its just raw. PERFECT.

#43I love my SD. I've had, in the years they were current, Ducati Bevel 900ss, Darmah, Guzzi Lemans, a BMW K bike, BMW R bikes, Ducati 851, 916, Monster, Aprilia Factory Tuonos. Laverdas....and several other bikes, and swapped rides with plenty of Jap repli-racers, spent time on Speed Triples...seems I could go on and on. I think I have a pretty good feel for some of the best bikes over the last 35 years. Yet, after all that, the only bike I've liked as much as my Ducati 900ss bevels (comparing how much I liked them in the 70s-80s to how much I like the SD now) is the SD. Some bikes have blinding power. Some great turn in. Some have a great linear feel of the controls and steering. Some convey the power pulses through the frame and into your butt so that it feels you always know what the motor is doing. Some have an undeniable feeling of frame stiffness and responsiveness. To me the SD has an amazing conbination of all of these attributes. I also happen to love the look.
So, why the lack of sales???
In the 70's lots of people would tell me "Oh, I wanted to buy a Ducati, but not many dealers, I don't know much about them, I worried about parts....." - unfamiliarity drove them away. It took many reviews of the Monster, 900ss (the modern belt drive one) and constant race wins for Ducati to really break out in the early 90's. All this exposure did it for them. I suspect it's the same for street KTMs. It takes years, exposure, luck to gain "mind-share". The bulk of the world goes for "safe". And it takes a long time and many points of exposure to gain an awareness amongst the masses and for them to feel buying a product is safe. It takes a lot more than a few good placings in naked comparisons and more than a couple good placings in bike of the year listings. KTM is not there yet with their street bikes.
Be careful what you hope for - it may come true! Do we really want to have that awareness? I kind of liked it better when Duati was something very unusual. Do we want KTM street bikes to be the new yuppie bike?

#55Being hands on with your bike is all part of the journey. Tinkering and fiddleing is the best way to get to know your bike and to me almost as enjoyable as the ride. I wouldn't care if it took all day to change the oil.
