Got my beloved SD out from hibernation and took it for it's first MOT. A few miles into my trip and giving it some oomph around a slight bend in a dual carageway I felt a jolt, like a very large stone had got caught in the chain or something and it made my pooper wince. Got to my local KTM dealership (30+ miles away) as I think my local bike stores are pretty shit, and handed the keys over only to be told it would take 1 hour.So I walked around and then went to a cafe and 1 hour later it was ready. I was told my Quill cans were a little noisy, but it had passed and also my chain was slightly tight. On hearing this I mentioned my pooper had winced from what I thought was a large stone getting caught in the chain or something. Anyhoo, I travelled home and put my bike back in the garage. Next day I decided to give my bike a good clean to get off the bloody road salt that was on my bike. And as you can see from the pictures ... not one, but 2 of the oval pieces of metal that the bolts go through the sprocket into had gone. This accounts for my pooper incident on the way upto the dealer, but somehow they missed even after spending an alleged hour looking over it. This is meant to be a safety check for gods sake and they have the cheek to tell me my chain was slightly too tight. As you can see in one of the pics it has taken a chunk out of my swingarm and there are now 3 chunks missing in my back wheel where they have left there marks leaving. I hope they did not hit anything following me as they would have been like bullets. I have emailed them pictures and await there excuses

Fook, who put you're sprocket on? and did not tighten them up enough?

I was concerned at this photo in you PB account too

The dealer should be named and shamed. How come you didn't notice it yourself though?

That frame is very worrying.

I had this damage from a rock

I think it's possible that a rock sheared the nuts off. If they were just loose they would have eaten the swing arm slowly.

Why didnt you get off the bike and look it over yourself, and if you did how did you miss it?
Many of us have had these bolts loosen, some have had them back off and smack the swing arm.
They should be taken apart, apply locktite, and re torqued.

Those nuts are crap, its a bad design there is not enough thread for the bolt diameter, the bolts are a little short to...........

I replace the nuts with new ones when changing the rear sprocket, make sure the bolt threads are cleaned up and dry, apply Blue loctite, torque the bolts up evenly in two stages, leave the bike overnight to be sure the loctite has hardened before riding

Oh and set your chain tension a little on the loose side or your chain will be snapping next........... your rear suspension will work better to

i have a question fur ya ! do you do clutch wheelies or power upshifts ? just curious ...

had a neighbor with an old 650 triumph bonneville that used to do clutch wheelies in the front of my house all the time --- BENT the counter shaft ...

cheers
I've broken the countershaft, bent the layshaft, and cracked the case clutching up on my Norton but don't see the relevance here...
first thing that popped into my mind was bolts broke from that chain grabbing at the sprocket under heavy popping of the clutch jarring the hell out of that sprocket and bolts --- next thing that came to mind was maybe the bolts were over torqued and combined with popping the clutch was too much for the bolts and they let go ......

something caused them to give - if not over torqued or loose then what

John, I don't see it with the rubber mounts.

Picking up a rock between the swingarm and sprocket could shear the nuts off though. Happened to me closer to the hub and did the damage I posted above. Made my sphincter wink when it happened blasting down a dirt back road in a lightning storm in the rain on the way back from a funeral viewing. I thought it was a close lightning strike, loud bang, felt it... Doing about 70 mph... Next day saw the damage, pulled the wheel to inspect.

Not saying that this was his problem but possible.
