My Oil Change Cliff Notes - Proceed on your on dime.
I just changed oil in my 08 SD yesterday.
This is what I did-good, bad or indifferent.
Got motor warm from + five mile ride.
Rolled the bike up on my bike work bench.
Sat on my ass on the roll around chair on the left side of the bike.
Drained the oil from the engine bottom screw.
Took the filter out from the same side and lost the oil "O" ring to the bottom oil the drain pan.
Drained the front oil tank.
Took the two screw out of the oil line on the bottom of the tank to get to the screen inside the tank.
To get the screen out of the tank, you have to finger fook the screen, and pull it out on your finger.
Inspect screen for bits and pieces from missed shifts, over rev's and general fook ups.
Replace screen, and hose and the two screws.
Roll your ass to other side of bike.
Remove the other inspection screen cover.
Take care with shaped "O" ring, very hard to replace if ride is on same day.
The inspection screen is 'bout 1 1/2 wide and 4 inch long and slides in / out.
Grap the screen frame with pliers and gently pull it out.
Inspect for fook ups, clean if needed, and replace.
Neither of my screens needed cleaning at 26k. Whew! But I change oil / filter and inspect screens at 3K oil changes.
Go have a snack or screw off for a half hour and let the oil drain from the three opening you made.
Sit you ass down on the right side of the bike and replace the screen cover, taking care with that zquilly "O" ring.
While on this side look at the coolent over flow container to see if you have any coolent left. Top off if needed.
Roll your ass to the other side of the bike.
Replace the drain screw on the engine bottom.
Replace the drain screw on the tank.
Fish the lost "O" ring from the bottom of the oil drain pan for the filter cover.
Replace a new oil filter. I always change a filter with oil changes. Do what you want, your bike.
Now get off your ass and pour in two quarts of new oil in the oil tank. Quart=32 oz.
The tank will not hold all three quarts that it takes.
Take the bike for an easy, short ride around your 'hood.
Look for leaks on return, pour the other quart of oil in and check the oil level.
Done.
Not so bad...Cliff notes are better than not changing at all...you choose.
