Having suffered from battery/rectifier/generator problems on both the SDR and 996S, I've bought a couple of non-motorcycle specific voltmeters/ammeters but been scratching my head re the wiring diagrams/additional electrical components recommended when fitted to a motorcycle.
Just came across and fitted a couple of these though:

which I'm running permanently fitted at the moment.
A little Tonka Toyish looking but that can be solved with some grey translucent film, they simply plug into battery charging lead and seem to do what it says on the tin:
