Swapping dual seat to single seat kit

Here's a quick step-by-step on how to swap from the dual seat kit to the single seat kit.
Do not hesitate to suggest improvements in wordings. Thanks!

Difficulty: Easy
Time to complete swap: +/- 1 hour 30 minutes the first time you do it. 30 to 40 minutes once you get the hang of it.

Image

Step 1:
Remove top screw on top of the seat-lock barrel to free the seat-latch. This latch is not the same than the one for the single seat kit. Make sure you have a longer latch in your kit which is not covered with a plastic tip.
Image

Remove the nut holding the locking barrel and pop it out of the dual seat.
Image

Step 2:
Remove the left and right seat brackets. These brackets are screwed on the fuel tank, they are not needed for the single seat kit.
Image

Step 3:
Remove left and right panels covering the silencers. The holding screws are situated on top. Easy stuff...
Image

Step 4:
Remove the 3 holding screws of the pillion foot pegs with an Allen key.
Image

Step 5:
Remove left and right silencers. While it looks intimidating, it is extremely easy on the Super Duke. (On the 990 Adventure and 990 SM it's quite tricky).
You need to remove the silencers to free the underseat 'bucket' because the silencers are just too large.
You first need to loosen the exhaust collars if you have a pair of after-market pipes. These are FMF Apex, very easy to work on and surprisingly extremely light!

Now remove the silencer holding screw bolted on the subframe.
Image

Slide the silencer out of its guide while gently doing some rocking motions to free the silencer off the intake exhaust.
Image

Step 6:
Remove the top screw holding the underseat compartment.
Image

Step 7:
Remove all the screws that hold the wirings.
Image

Image

Unplug the rear brake wires and indicators.
Image

Step 8:
Remove the underseat compartment of the Dual Seat kit.
This is for me the most frustrating step, because you have to be careful of all the wires which go between the underseat compartment and the fuel tank. the rear comes out by bending it out slightly under the subframe. Now you should see why the silencers needed to be removed.
Image

Step 9:
Now place the underseat compartment for the Single Seat kit. Same story than the previous step but in reverse order. Again, this is for me the most frustrating parts because you have to be careful of the wire system. Make sure no wires hang unnecessarily below the compartment.
Image

Step 10:
Place the single seat front support bracket. This part only needs to be installed for the single seat kit.
Image

Image

Step 11:
The part below fits at the rear of the subframe. It holds the rear fairing locking system of the single seat kit together.
Slide the long part, which has 2 screw threads on each sides, in its cylinder. And fit both parts through the subframe and underseat compartment.
Check how both parts fit on the photo below.
Image

Step 12:
Place 2 large headed screws, one at the bottom of the underseat compartment and one to hold the rear faring locking system.
Image
Please note that the release mechanism of the rear fairing needs to be placed on the left side of the sub-compartment.

Step 13:
Place the silencers using Step 5 in reverse. It should not be difficult, watch out for the holding brackets securing the silencers in the middle part, it is a bit tricky but not really difficult to place the silencers back.

Step 14:
Place the rear fairing support screws where indicated on the subframe. You need to place that special washer in the screw as shown below.

Image

Step 15:
Now take the top screw which fits on the locking barrel in 'Step1 ' and the locking barrel. Screw the dedicated seat latch for the single seat kit. It is longer than the dual seat kit locking latch and is not covered with a plastic tip.
Image
Connect the rear light and indicators wires and lock the rear fairing in place.

Step 16:
Using your key, fit the single seat and lock it in place. If the seat is not secured and comes out, it means you placed the locking system latch up-side down.

That's it!

what year model is that SDR?

My SD-R is a '09 model, it comes standard with the single seat. The Dual seat kit or the Single seat kit should cost you in the region of U$1,000. Look out on eBay for loose parts and refer to KTM Parts Finder to make sure that your kit is complete with all necessary parts.

I will have to say this is a very nice "how to do it". It's great to see someone raising the bar. It will not be beat for some time on this site.....unless maybe Pete gets another project.

Thanks for the class act.

Good Job!

I'm currently looking at trying to do this conversion without changing the underseat tray, just using the 'R' tray for both the single and dual seat. Also looking into the option of putting rivnuts in the dual seat base to attach the side plastics directly to the seat to speed the swap process.

Will let you know how I get on...!

Don't hold your breath for a back up of the pic's.
Was a good how to tho, one of the best on this site, but you can get thru it with out, if you have the kit to do it with.
I bought the KTM kit and installed it on my bike.
E-Z-P-Z.
A gazillion parts ....
Luck had it I had the full un-used kit, with instructions.
No reason to sweat about the pics, if you don't have the kit in hand.
Not a rocket science install.
