Hello there, long time no see

After two years without KTM I'm back on the new Superduke 1290

2010 I drove in the KTM Superduke Battle and became second in the championship and now after 3 years on different bikes I will start in the now called Continental Superduke Battle again with my brother, who won the championship in 2012, and my Dad

www.conti-battle.de

For 2014 it will be allowed to start with both bikes, 1290 and 990. So far there are 40 starters, and I think somewhat around 10-13 starting with the new one

But enough of that

I got my 1290 a little earlier and went to Cartagena - Spain to give it a try
By the way, it has 160PS on the wheel and 150nm, of course not wheelpower but still very nice

I havent changed anything for the first ride, stock suspension, stock everything

The brakes are amazing, simply amazing.
I am not a big fan of electronic stuff like TC and ABS but I gave it a try on the first day.
Wheelie control is very very nice for fast acceleration, much better than the BMW one
TC comes very late in the sport mode (or whatever the name is) , but the rear wheel is very good to handle, you feel every second how much grip there is left.
Maybe the 200/60 Pirelli is the reason for late TC activation, I dont know

The motor is very nice, not too much though. After riding a 200 horsepower BMW for one year
Compared to the RC8R it feels a little stronger in the middle, but weaker near the end. This might not be a fair compare, because my RC8R had a full exhaust system and stock kit. 175hp

For a fat fook like me the suspension is way way to soft on the racetrack. Everything shakes, a lot of movement. Nothing new to us 990 riders though
The footrest is waaaaaaaaay to low, too. Everything scratches on the ground very early. The exhaust for example scares the superbikers

In february I will go to cartagena again, but this time with my nearly ready to win the championship bike

Suspension front: Full closed öhlins fork
Suspension rear: I'll keep the stock one, but change it. A little more compression and so on
Shift up side down stuff, dont know what the english word is
Gear ratio must be longer for me
Footrests up up up up upppppppppppp

Laptime Cartagena so far is 1.41,7 - with my Suzuki K9 with full suspension I drove 1.39,7
My aim for the next time is 1.38,** - and kick some superbikers asses

If you got any questions, feel free to ask. If you are interested in information how the season is going and the changes on the bike I will update this fromt time to time like 2010
Sweet, did the bike get noise tested at Cartagena? curious to know how loud it is.
With the stock exhaust it's quiet, very quiet. Would guess around 93db

Sweet dude. Great to see you back on a KTM. I take it you'll be covering the bike in Stompgrip again Keep us updated with how the season prep and racing goes. Good luck!
NOW - That's the stuff I want to know about the 1290!

BTW, over here - we call the reverse pattern "GP Shift".
Good to see you back Tead. Looking forward to hearing some reliable and accurate feedback on the new bike from someone who actually knows how to ride and develop the bike and offer an opinion worth hearing. Good luck in the new season, keep us all posted!

Tead, do you think fitting correct weight springs, so you can achieve the correct sag settings will help the ground clearance issue?

Good to see you back here Tead! Also good to see that someone put the new SD to good use!
Excellent work and go get them for the '14 season, make us proud!
I just remembered a problem with the cooling liquid. At braking it runs up the tube and comes out somewhere, dont know exactly where, bike is on its way back from spain.
Not a single problem, all three battle rider who went on a track day had this problem. Wet shoe and slippery footrest wouldnt be a ktm if there were no liquid coming out somewhere

KTM has to fix this

Still working on this fuel tank thing & won't deny I've been keeping tabs on KTM08's thread just in case (The 2013 enlargement of the European Union saw Croatia join the European Union as their 28th member state on 1 July 2013 - EU directive & ethanol etc etc.) Sad, I know.

I respect(ed) how KTM are "out there" doing exactly what made me jump from Japanese bikes in the first place. Although my experience with KTM is akin to falling in love & finally jumping into bed with the girl of your dreams, only to find she has a cock & then bends you over to f*ck you in the arse. It's their attitude basically & consequently it's been a bitter pill that I refuse to swallow. ¡Innuendo alert!

I've only been uber negative in the past because I'm envious & stressed. It's great that the 1290 has been made & I'm happy for all those who have taken the plunge. I hope you are well rewarded - it looks like this is a certainty.

Apologies for hijacking your thread - definitely one to follow! Looking forward to further developments.
Great pic's,,,,how about video if anyone can sort it you can,,,,,,interesting on hearing how you do out there,,
I will make one in february in cartagena
At least this is the plan
A mate of mine posted this up...

Blacked out headlight looks rad. Might do that to mine.
Newwwwws

Went to Aragon with my Dad and brother. My dad drove a very nice 2.18, my brother and me 2.06 - still having problems to get the suspension working, but we got ideas
The wind in Aragon was brutal, from 255kph on the straight with normal wind I was able to get up to 274kph (all GPS measured) with wind

Ive made an onboard video, but it is still uploading, but to make the wait sweet, some pictures

my Dad:

my brother:
maximale Schräglage, Kupplungsdeckel schleift

little drifting

Nice dude I see the monkey hanging off is slowly coming back. How are you liking the bike compared to the 990? Looks like you still have the CAT attached, no plans to remove it for a different system?
The CAT?

One of the biggest problems with the 1290 is the "pussy street mode" crap. You dont get the full power. Next week we will install the akra full exhaust system, I pray to god it will help to get rid of the power problem, I can barely pass a 600 with a skilled driver
Compared to the 990 it is a lot faster, more power, better stability and bigger possible lean angle
But so far I liked the driving position better on the 990, but Im not yet sure why. Something just doesnt feel right when on straights or corners
Im working on it
Bazzaz quickshifter will be installed, too. All next week. But I have to wait till april *heart stops* till next time driving
Wonderful pictures, than you!

Where did you get the mesh for your radiator guard? I've been looking for exactly that but haven't been able to find any.

Its a great pleasure to hear how you are racing this beast Tead. Looking forward to lots of updates of your progress and mods. Good luck.

Has anyone heard from GoGo recently? Wondering if he's considering a switch to the 1290...

Nope never been to Aragon with the 990, only with the R6
The laptimes with the 1290 arent fast enough, 2.03 was planned, but the wind was terrible
With the 990 I would say 2.06 is possible, too.
But the long straight is a pain in the ass
Thanks, that's really interesting. From what I've read about the 1290 I'd have expected it to be significantly faster than a 600. No doubt you'll be quicker after some more development work. I suspect for those of us who aren't racing but just enjoying a track day, the old 990 is just as much fun, perhaps because it probably offers a more raw albeit old fashioned experience. Good luck with your season
Man that engine sounds lazy (albeit no doubt rapid), nice bit of footage Tead.

I hope the sound gets better with the akra system
I dont use the TC or the ABS, I dont think its necessary when it is dry

So you're certain Belfast was lying about the ABS?
I crashed with my S1000RR last year, 220kph and suddenly, no brake. Wonderful feeling
ABS was deactivated, but not deinstalled out of the bike

Dont need this experience again and now I have a small trust problem
Good to see they have solved the camera shake issues from the 990... oh wait

I'm sure it will sound a completely different beast once the akra is fitted. Guess you and any other guys racing the 1290 are going to run into and have to solve a few issues with this brand new bike along the way. Really looking forward to seeing you get it really Ready to Race and out there on the grid.

The thing I really want fixed is the throttle response sorted. . Such a lame response curve.

And what a choked up motor. .. euro 5? Emissions can go get screwed.

And the lack of adjusters on the forks. .. wtf.

Ok, my suspension is far from stock... So I understand that stock suspension is crap but no adjustment at all for a 25k bike. .. really?

Really? The 990's are quicker on the track? I don't see how it's possible? How could ktm get it wrong?
Well to be fair - the 1290 isnt build to race. Neither is the 990 BUT: we have a lot of experience with the 990, back in 2008 it was a lot slower compared to 2013 5 Years of work made this bike as fast as it is today

I think after 2 or 3 races the 1290 will be much faster, but we need to find out what's wrong with it and this takes time

Dont worry, I'll keep you guys updated. This weekend Im going to Most, fastest 990 time is from my brother, 1.45,** in 2012
With my BMW I managed a 1.40**
My aim with the 1290 is somewhere in between maybe 42, would be nice. We will see and I will report it
First race, first podium, but only second

My little brother kicked my ass, just by two seconds but anyway, he finished first AND got the fastest Laptime by 1.32,5, 0.3 faster than me
Very nice race, we had a lot of fun together, fair overtakes and everything

I have to work a little more on the suspension, it seems like the 1290 doesnt have a lot of weight on the front and I changed the spring rate from 10.5 to 10 and everything went a lot better

Nice set of pics dude And congrats to you and your bro. Interesting that a 990 got 4th. What was the track like? Was it really suited to the 1290 compared to 990? What were your lap times like compared to the 990?
Outstanding pictures!
Thanks for posting and please keep going.

Good to see Dad finished in 24th place!
Why can we not have a naked series as good here

Great pics

Schleiz is over, but no time yet to write anything
just a small information
Two videos, 1 dry race, 1 wet race. 1 race started from 31
A lot of action in both races, although the rain race video will reveal my little girly rain balls

More later! )
can't wait to see results and photos
No photos yet, Im afraid but as soon as possible Im gonna post them

First dry race is online, short clip because the rest of the race nothing changed so I skipped the rest enjoy

Why are you so far on the grid ? It's strange to see the huge differences of level between you and the other guys...
I couldnt drive in the time practise, had to work, no holiday
But It was possible to start from the back of the grid, 31th position
In the end I finished 3rd.
Second race was rainy, still a 5th place so it was a good weekend
Im in second position in the championship with 47 points behind my brother who leads with 54
Oh OK, I understand then...
Well, this is even more impressive to finish 3rd from the back of the grid...
Congratulations
All those SuperDukes in one place... *drool*

That was a fun video to watch, Tead. Reminded me of my roadracing days. There's something oddly satisfying about picking off the grid like that.
Sounds soooo much better with the full system on it How are you finding the built in "slipper" clutch? Still riding with the TC?
Still? Never drove with the tc, I tried it in the rain but it didnt work for me
Still dont like it
The "slipper" clutch is nice, I liked it on my RC8R, too. Or did they change something? But its KTM, they never do...

5. and 6. race took place in Assen this weekend

First Race online
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXjz0dh1fqo

Have fun!

Two very very very nice races, first race finished together with my brother 36 seconds ahead of place 3 and 4 and only 0.1 between me and him as you'll see in the video

Enjoy!
looks like a lot of fun, what work improvements have you made on the suspension
The bike sounds like an angry cow

Nice footage
Nice race dude! Looks like you and your bro were having a good scrap out there. You both need to bring them to Cadwell Park one year for Crashfest. I think you will love The Mountain.

By the way: with the 1290 and conti tyres my fastest lap is just 0.2 seconds slower compared to my IDM racebike R6 with pirellis

Finally the next race

Oschersleben is over, new race video is made

Sadly my brother crashed in second qualyfing. KTM 1290 in orange = fatality not much left

I won the race, but very close. Very exciting race with Sebastian Bursig. I hade a lot of trouble with the front, lost it in the second lap but managed to avoid a crash

Second race was wet and I crashed in the first lap, so no points there

New championship standing:

Last lap, last corner overtake from second to first very close one

Video will come soon I hope
What is this air bag looking vest I see in the pictures? Looks great for safety.
Is your brother okay? Any pics of the crashed 1290's ? Good to see how they fair after a crash and everyone love a bit of crash porn.

Awesome photo btw!

Damn, that sucks man. I guess you have some spare parts for the next one.
Ohhhhhhhhhh shit.
on a side note, what kind of stand is that? can you pick the bike up with it?

Yes it's a Bursig stand

Still my first one on my bike, Im using it since 2009
You can change the adapter plate and use it on every bike

Video is uploading
You brother OK?

Not as strong build as the 990 then, frame is totally wrecked!

First dibs on the akrapovic downpipes!
We didn't see the wreck. Looks like it tumbled end over end. That would do that type of damage.
My brother is okay, just a big right foot, but nothing broken. Had luck this time
Good Start ! Bad Ending !
Was a bit of an aggressive move from the other guy wasn't it?
I know you have to watch out but when you turning in on the brakes like that there is nowhere to go!
What a shit head.
Loved every race vid Tead, congrats!! And to be able to race a season in family? Unbelievable lucky bros the two of you!!

Got a question, you said you have the bursig stand prior to the 1290r, so you had to buy the adapting plate alone, right? Did you needed any other supplementory pieces or just the plate? Thanks!

PD: Do you have a close view pic to see how it fits to the bike?
Great vid dude! So have you got it handling how you want now? Seemed to be living with sports bikes until that guy put that harsh move on you. Better luck for the next round!
