Well we are into the new year so time to start looking forward to this years Crashfest! Dates for July aren't up yet but no reason not to get excited. I'm assuming it's Cadders as I can't think of anywhere better. King of Cadwell title up for grabs again and hopefully I won't be spending this one in hospital. Bring it on guys!
What? Are we missing out on the 5 pages of debate and at least 2 polls before deciding to go to Cadwell this year?

I knew this forum would go downhill when the 1290 newbies arrived.

Madness.
Klinck, it just wasn't the same without you fella.

I'm in. Are we all getting free instruction from the new instructor
Yeah I'm in also up for any free instruction ie weighting the pegs, counter steering, 5th-6th gear wheelieing technique's and mountain air
lol you'll have to drop into Novice to get instruction but for some of you that might be a good thing TBH I doubt I'll work either of the days. Want to be based in paddock with you lot and not in area by track entrance although that will mean paying

Oh and don't worry the wafting of herbal delight will be back in 2014!

I've missed this development!
Do NL put you through a course or anything?

Been looking to start this thread but checking NL no dates up yet as already confirmed.

*Goes off to find monumental "im in" GIF.......*

I hope we have sun again!
Cadwell is mint in the sun, but super depressing in the wet.

…… oh my…….. so looking forward to this…..

…… goes of to find "gif"…… doesn't have a clue what one is so gives up and post anyway…..
Even if this means I'll have to swim across the sea with my beloved SD on a raft made out of duct tape and ti-wraps behind me, I'll be there for sure this time!

With the hill (not a highsider) in mind I hope to be called the flying Dutchman afterwards

Could run a crèche this year with the Norfolk clan as well. Give the little ones a taste of the good life

Sounds like I have invented some offspring (could have sorn you said something about it last year...) taxi
I'm racing 12-13th July so hopefully the 21-22nd July dates will be on with No Limits. If it's 14-15th I could come straight from Oulten Park. I'm sure they'll have dates up soon.
Could have a 2 day shakedown before racing?
I'm in!
I shall be bringing my ridiculously over powered CBR600fx.
Having said that I think it makes more power than my SD did last time it was out at Cadders - dynoed later at a massive 86bhp.

If the dates fit with a child free weekend and I can remember where the romper suit and sliders have been hibernating then I'm in this year. About time I wobbled round a track on the SD after several years of ownership and zero track miles and would be good to meet a few more of the SD.Net crew.

Will keep an eye peeled for confirmation of the dates and happy to contribute towards barby / booze fund if such a thing exists....

Who will be the envy of the group and turn up on a 1290 Superduke?
Someone pay for me to fly over with the SDR and im in
Someone should post a nice highlights vid from previous years, to get us in the mood and give us something to get us through the wet, bleak winter.
I could really put the crash in crashfest guys.

Dan, top work on the visuals. I watched them on my smart tv and they look mint.

Miller was flying in that clip! Nice of you to park up in the braking area at the end of park straight to let him through again!
Really a shame it ended like that, not only did he hurt himself, but he scuffed up my tie "best looking SD of all time."

Ok I know these dates aren't up on NL site yet but I just received the instructor cover email and it has dates through year. Cadwell dates for 2 dayers so far are

July
06-07

August
4-5
or
18-19 (I am racing there on the 16th-17th so could just stay. Might work the Monday sessioned day if we do these 2 to make it a bit cheaper. Open pitlane though is a play day that is if I can still walk and am not in hospital None of these clash with racing though so which ever work for majority)

More dates could of course be added.

Is the 6th sessioned and the 7th OPL? If so I would go for that as you say its a Sunday and would help peeps out who work Mon-Fri.

But if its not OPL on the Monday, well its just not Crashfest with out an OPL.
Also having the rod taken out my leg at some point this year which will put me out of action for a bit
Early July please! From memory Dan, I was on light duties for about 3 weeks after my rod was taken out.

July for me as well please!…. would mean for the first time i would be attending the crashfest on my time off! rather than having to work and then travel in the evening to get there late - so looking forward to this already
I have just been informed by my esteemed colleague that we have leave restrictions due to world cup.

Semi finals are on the 5th and 8th July (and I am due to work the 8th) so IF England (doubtful) were to be in the semi's in the group that plays on the 8th could be difficult for me to get the 8th off.

But July looks like the one to go for

England will crash out at the group stage m8, don't worry about that lol. They are fooking useless *****
If we do those early July dates I might do all 3 days. Get a bit of cheeky practice in

They don't tell you in excel doc if they are OP or not. I would imagine the Tuesday is as it normally seems to go that way.

Can we decided on a date ASAP
Need to book days of with the wife at least 6 months in advance
Don't care what dates as long as I get to ride
And eat beer chicken
3 day crashfest
Post missing

I prefer July as well, first week of august I'll be in the Ardennes, with SD of course
Put a leave request in
And missing out on the Nurburgring and Spa Francorchamps? NO WAY!!

Just make it a july Crashfest
Leave confirmed for provisional date
I've put myself down to work the Sunday and Monday for NL but not the OP day. So watch out I've got a black flag mounted on the bike and a flick of a switch and it pops up and waves away
So what happens when you have to give Ginge "the talk"?
Going to build a sin bin especially for him. I can see it getting a lot of use.
Gonna be doing some miles it seems, Flidfest is the weekend before! Let's hope work is quiet.
….I think one warning for the ginger ninja then any more infractions and it will be a compulsory fitting of one of these!

Fingers crossed!!
Spoke to No Limits this morning and it's definitely the 6th, 7th and 8th. Looks like we're set peeps unless anyone has an objection? 3 day Fest should be awesome!!!

I'm far too old and wise to enter drinking games with anyone, especially Motoronin after seeing him last year!

Thankyou!

I just want to do 2 mins laps. I need to get off the bike more and go faster down that big hill (An everywhere else for that matter). YES please follow me round and there will be plenty to talk about, trust me!

I got one of those bluetooth GPS 10Hz things to encourage me this year.
3 days sounds brilliant.

Expect it to be about £300 for the 3 days, camp on site for £5 a night (unless you're sabre) I expect Klinck will arrange us a special deal! Do as many days as your body can handle or until the bike blows or you crash!
^^^ this^^^ if I had to choose 2 of the 3 it would be Monday and Tuesday as Tuesday is open pitlane and is always a good laugh. For those really keen there are evening sessions on sun and mon night too. Join Trackday Riders forum and get 10% off when u book on phone with NL.
Any chance of getting some instruction round Cadwell before the 4th May?

When do we need to have booked at NL and is this date the final date?
I have a bike trailer but driving any distance that slow kills me so I'm considering a van hire instead.

I live in north Oxon near Banbury. Just checking if there is anybody local (ish) or on the route who would be interested in chucking their bike in the van??

Most probably I would only be doing the first two days. Let me know if interested.
shows what a great event this is due to being only jan 24th and everyone is getting excited.
the thread is already six pages long

so lets have a show of hands on who is intending to make it?

There might be 2 or 3 from BSB paddock on the OP day but not super bike level. They know how to pass though so it's just the initial shock as someone comes past you into a corner at a speed that leaves you thinking "no way he's going to make that corner!" Somehow they do though. I would say laptimes vary between 1.35 to high 1.50s in fast.

Not sure how to add myself to the list but can't resist this, 1st 2 days and evening in between I think.

I have done inters before but best do 1st day in slow/novice I think because (1) it's been ages since I was on a track (2) the last time I was I left in an ambulance. I should be OK though, everyone says SDs crash well

From what I can see, the idea is to join Trackday Riders to get the 10% and book direct with NL?

I you were a fast group rider a couple of years ago I'd stick with it. Within 2 sessions inters will frustrate you as sports bikes will be quick on the straights and then hold you up in the corners.SD is a great bike on track and suited to Cadwell. I'm sure you won't be the slowest rider in fast dude. If you aren't happy out there after a couple of sessions you could always move down a group.

Three day Crashfest will be immense, count me in. Inters I reckon, although might see if I can go fast enough to sneak up - Klink when you said you reckon fast group would run from about 1:35s to high 1:50s, are you talking 1:50.9, or a bit longer?

Looking forward to it already!

Probably going to regret this but.......

T-shirts/ hoodies for this years festival of crashing? The shop that did the last batch for us still has the designs on file - I went and checked. So what are peeps views for this year? Design work etc is in the hands of the gifted - Millar that means you and from memory superdan came up with some good designs last time as well..... I'm happy to pick them up and collate the order so to speak..... Anyone who messes the ordering process up will answer to Lydia!

...... Once I have retrieved the computer from the online shopping department I will have a hunt through the 2012 thread for the hoodie design so virgins to the crashfest can see how badly they need one!
Image

i know it's been done before and it's not all blokes riding but i never got one but still would like one

fixed that for you.. Reaper
The last time we had them (2012) The design was as pictured below - both on hoodies and tshirts.

…. the quality was very good and mine are still going - all be it a little faded !
I'm wearing mine now. Still in great condition! I wouldn't mind an extra one just for wearing out with just the logos on the front and arms. Back one is a bit big for everyday wearing out.

I think the idea of a circuit map on the back with crashes marked is excellent!

For busy points, just a short summary to avoid overloading the graphic e.g. just re-label Park "Mowing Zone" and list usernames.

Chicane - "Forbidden Love": Millar, Superdan.

I think it would work
Post missing

This post could not be recovered from the original forum.

Surely the chicane should be "breaking point", Millar has broke numerous bones there.

Hall bends, "helicopter departure lounge" for Ronins previous misdemeanors, maybe crosshatches on the back straight depicting it as a "safe area" for him

Personally I can't stand those shirts. But that is of course just my personal opinion. I'm sure once Millar has put his Illustrator skills to use the graphic could be printed on anything you like. We can host the AI file and anyone can download. Black hoodie for me though.

buy a cheap tent in the uk bud, or maybe someone on here could lend you one. nearest place to stay plus taxi will cost way more than a cheap tent that you chuck in the bin after
If you are coming jmann I can bring a tent and sleeping bag for you to use. Don't forget you can hire a bike for the day http://nolimitstrackdays.com/bike-hire.html/ Matt from Smallboy is a really nice chap and raced 675s at BSB level and in the No Limts race there last year was doing low 1.35s which is not hanging around. So he knows how to setup his bikes. So pack your leathers and helmet
do it mann
Yeah that will be good man, there are no railway lines near Louth where Cadwell is based, however I live half hour/40 mins away so if you can make your way to the local railway station (Scunthorpe, which links from the main routes via Doncaster or Sheffield) I can sort you with a lift there and drop you off again, you can use my gaff as abase if you like, take up Klinks offer of a tent and you are sorted!
When it comes to carpooling, I will be coming from Holland with my car and trailer. If there's anyone else interested in coming from somewhere on route I could pick you up and we'll split the travel costs from that point.
Thanks guys. You are all so kind. I'll sort out my travel arrangements and when they are finalised I'll get back to you but I don't want to be any burden. I'm very tempted with the bike hire but i'm on various promises so I can't afford even a minor off and injury but it's very tempting ...
How often do you get a chance to ride a circuit like Cadwell and The Mountain dude? You're coming halfway round the world so it would be rude not too Trust me when you see it you will want to ride it.

I'm still trying to get booked on for this year. So many life things and family commitments etc. to contend with. Now that the dates have gone public on the No Limits website how long do I realistically have to make sure I can book dates before they are sold out?

Also. As anyone who does track days with me before knows that I always book into inters - mainly because I'm a bit lazy, not that fit, old and injured, usually tired because of the kids and also usually distracted with work or other issues so not focussed enough. I find I want to take it easy on some of the sessions and don't want to hamper and get in the way of the fast boys. But really, I often get pissed off with the speed of the inters and wish I was in the fast group.

But I haven't done Cadders before so I'll be learning the track at first. What's the collective advice on this? Should I book into inters and maybe hope to move up? Klinky...can you help with this? Mate, I'd really appreciate going out and having an assessment with you. Have a follow of you round to learn the best lines and then you tell me what I'm doing wrong. You know this track mate, it's not Brands is it! Can I get this with you as an instructor whatever group I'm in with or are you not on duty during these dates?

Really committed to coming this year, missed out so many times!

yes is the answer to the any group bic. as instructors we can go out in any group during the day.
instuction is normally done on a first come first served basis.
so if you want to go out with craig in a certain session, say so before someone else. simples.

as its your first time at cadders i would go inters first day. it is a very narrow track and there is no run offs other than grass.

what you book for the next day is your call really. but craig knows your ability's better than me so he may say different.
It's 6 weeks before the BSB meet, Thundersport will have been and gone, as will Derby Phoenix but it's only 2 weeks before Bemsee go there so there will probably be some fast boys playing in fast. I'd stick with Inters Bic. As you say you've never been and it's a narrow technical track. More than happy to show you round dude. Come and see me on day 1, 1st session and I'll take you round at the front of the group for sighting laps and show you the line. I can then go out with you later for a session once you've got a feeling for the place and are more into your comfort zone.
I just booked into the inters for the 6th and 7th but the No Limits website didn't seem to enable me to book for the 8th. Is it sold out? It didn't say that, just wouldn't let me book for that day.

]
Must be a glitch m8. No way it has sold out.

Anyone that is coming and hasn't booked remember you can join http://www.trackdayriders.co.uk/tdr/forum and get 10% off if you quote your username over the phone. You have to book by phone though to get it.

This is the line we are all looking for Bic

With Bic's appearance Woodys best looking SD trophy could be under threat!

Thank goodness for that Dan!
got to be a wet day as well
Booked for the 6th & 7th. Can't do the 8th as childcare commitments wont allow.

This will be my first track day for a few years, my first ever on the SD and my first at Cadwell. Although I have done a fair bit of track riding in total and most of that in the fast group I was concerned not to get in anybody's way due to the long lay off and all the firsts mentioned above so I have booked inters for day one and fast for day two. Most of the things Bic mentioned also apply to me so I think this cautious approach makes most sense. If I'm up to speed quickly I will try and change groups on day one or if I have lost it completely and cant keep up I can down group on day two. Just going for a laugh so not really bothered either way.

I will be renting a van and coming from Oxford probably the night before (5th) If I'm passing anybody on the way there would be plenty of room for a second bike so I could collect and split costs etc but remember I'm just doing the first two days.

Will bring some spanners and booze, sleep in the van and hope for good weather!

I wonder how dusty / mouldy the leathers are - haven't seen them for a couple of years!!

Really looking forward to it
whop whoop

its only march and theres plenty joining up this year.
I will try and book for the third day later. It seems there was a glitch on the NL website so I can still get in there.

You should invite a few 1290 SD owners. I have been razzing a few over on KTM forum and they are, exactly as you would expect, the egocentric, thin skinned, self important, wankers that have to have every new bike that comes on the scene regardless of make or suitability. You could call their group Cuntfest.

Still at least there will be plenty of lightly used models around for next summer, all the bling, oil leaks and recalls done, big chicken strips, one previous owner now chasing the next big thing.
you are such a troll Luke.
I've been following it on the KTM forum….. it is fecking funny how quickly they get their panties in a bunch…..
Do ever post a invitation over there for them to join us? The RC8 guys would love it, they're all at WSB level with their riding.
Yes Luke you certainly should invite bigcockmotherfuckermachoridinggod from the RC8 forum as he has been a fan of yours for a long time and it would be nice to see him given a chance to shake your hand or some other body part of choice
Yes I am afraid a couple of the chaps on that forum dont find me as amusing as I find them.

….. not happy Pops…….. sort it out!

Had to resort to gifs as Klinck posted my normal response to acts of such treachery!!!!
I know but when you've got a new bike you want to be on it and for the price of Crashfest I can get a long weekend in the lake district and one in Scotland off roading so it's a no brainer.
There will be plenty of new riders there to play with,i'm old hat and everyone knows my lines and what to expect. I'm sure someone could get black flagged over the mountain just to keep tradition going, you don't really need to wheelie to the club house to get it

I'll pop over for a beer/burger in the evening and kipp the night in the van without paying camping fee's,so things wont be that different.

I just don't seem to be using my SDR these days, and if I'm honest I've fallen out of love with blasting about on short circuits,i'd much rather go off on an adventure touring or hit the dirt. Must be my age, peer pressure wont change me mind as I'm a stubborn fooka!
Stalker will be getting a black flag over the mountain don't you worry about that!
One of my mates is coming and I can say that it will be an ocean going, card carrying certainty that that boy will be black flagged at some point!........he's a menace to say the least

Uniform has arrived for Crashfest

…. brilliant PMSL!
So, thought this might amuse some here...

Been three or more years since I have been on track, I have never ridden the SD on track and hardly ridden it at all for six months so I thought I should make a bit of effort to get ready.

Amongst other things I got the KTM gell seat and a CF seat hump. I also pulled out my old racing leathers and after much scrubbing with baby wipes they looked OK. Much to my surprise I actually still fitted in the leathers so thought I should go out and see if I remembered how to ride. I always feel a bit ridiculous in a romper suit on the road but figured if I was going fast enough it would just be a reddish blur for motorists so why worry.

Bikes going great but I encountered an unexpected problem, there was zero friction between my arse and the saddle, None!! This was a weird and quite insecure feeling, I would slide back under acceleration, hard braking had me up against the tank, once I got familiar with it sliding side to side was actually quite amusing but still felt very strange. I have ridden any number of sports bikes on track in this suit and never experienced anything like it, I'm not sure if it would preclude maximum attack or not but I suspect it would be a hindrance at full pace, especially on the brakes.

Anybody else experienced this?? If yes any suggestions for increasing arse to saddle friction (an obvious open goal for piss taking!!)

Incidentally my pace was quite good but I couldn't get comfortable hanging off at all due to the mandelbars and upright riding position. I will keep at it but have to break down years of sports bike muscle memory, will be interesting to see if some actual track riding allows a breakthrough!
Hi buddy,

I have the same trouble, get some stompgrip or techspec snakeskin on the tank that will help a lot to grip with your legs. I think it helps to move around a bit though, takes less effort than lifting your ass out of the seat to hang off.

Of course you probably know all this. It could be all the cleaning agent in your leathers making them slippery too.
I have cancelled the 6th and 7th I am just doing the 8th but will be there all weekend.

Unfortunately my crash has taken its toll on my bank balance. Will have the gopro and BBQ tongs at ready....

You can pick it up on way to Crashfest will trailer it to my folks in Louth prior to event.
Comrades:

Well I'm locked in - have booked the flights and hire car Etc. I'll be driving from Heathrow to Cadwell Park starting in the late afternoon on the 5th (about 16:00).

To me the route looks like:

M25->M1->A421->A1->A1139->A47->A16->A17->A52->B1192 (approximately St Albans, Milton Keynes, Peterborough, Louth ...)

I'll need to find a pub to stay overnight so has anyone got any suggestions for a quaint English style place along the way?

Comrades: Ok I'm onto it. In fact, I think I was here about 03:00 this morning thinking about it and analysing logs but it's not going to be easy.

For those of you that haven't seen, Kevxtx has said that if I can crack it I can date his sister. Only problem is he won't post a picture in the Nakeds and she might look just like him

Any progress will be reported in the remapping the 1290 thread.

OK dudes, may I make a suggestion this year? food is generally a free for all but may it be a good idea for half to bring food and other half not, those half that dont chuck some money in and we can do a shop on the monday day, I can do that as wont be riding, otherwise over the 3 days food might/will go off? Also make a beer/ice run.

Also anyone got a jenny I can plug into on Tuesday?

Yeah just spoke to NL and Sunday and Monday are full. They are double checking numbers and will call me back. If anyone hasn't booked yet let me know and I'll try and get you to the top of standby list if it turns out it really is full.

Just spoken to Mike, he can't get time off and its all booked up anyway. I'm not going on my own from here as the costs are too high. So that's me and him out

lol you fooking grass Simon! It's not like you aren't there as well! Anyway I have some KTM and HRC factory parts to test lol
I am off Monday and Tues so may pop down if its a nice day and see my folks in Louth at the same time.

Spoke to Mark about putting my go pro on the inside of the left hander towards the mountain, on the mountain by the marshall post on the left at the side of the mountain and at the inside of the hairpin, he likes the sound of it but said he will chat with MSV, said I would do a NL ProMo vid in return so he is chatting with MSV to see if he can do it, so feel free to try and coax him into the right decision (will get some epic mountain jumping/wheelie shots in slow mo). Not told him about about using a a NL instructor to take my swivel cam on track though at lunch on one of the days

God if only I had a helicam
We'll see if we can work something on the swivel. Maybe either lunch or between day and evening sessions. Problem is there will have to marshalls at their posts before they would allow us to do anything other than cruise around.

So are we going with the plan to just take enough food, ice and beer for Sat night and Sunday, then restock from a kitty?

I'm not going to need my gennie as we have power in the holding area, so if anyone needs a gennie let me know and I'll throw mine in the van.

Calling all Crashfest veterans.....

My plan is to drive up on Saturday, kip in the van sat night and be there bright and early (well early anyway) for registration on Sunday morning. So my first question is will I be able to park overnight at Cadwell having unloaded the bike or will I be locked out till Sunday morning?? Will also be kipping in the van for Sunday night but I doubt this will be an issue.

What's the fuel situation there? I will top the bike up and bring my Jerry can but that wont last two days, fuel on site or local gas station??

In addition to the bike, some tools, fuel, a crate of booze and a hip flask I'm wondering what to do about food. Is there a SD.Net BBQ etc planned or is it every man for himself?? Happy to bring some burgers / sausages etc if that helps. With regard to non alcoholic drinks for the days I'm assuming that there will be a shop on site?

Looking forward to seeing you all there!
Yes, unpack your bike Sat night next to the van, we usually take over the area nearest noise testing/the track, just have to cough up some camping fees though or the 30 stone security guard may get out of his Laguna and eat you, word of warning to a first timer, dont make eye contact with him.

There is fuel on site, expensive though, Louth is a ten minute drive away but only one garage lets you fill jerry cans.

Bring meat, lots of meat and buns/biscuits/bacon, enough to last till Monday then we are chucking money in the kitty to buy alcohol/ice/more food (it goes off) there is a restuarant that sells drinks but bring your own, waaaaay cheaper.

I will be bringing my bin black bucket which will hold a few tinnies, but not everyones!
There is free tea and coffee in the holding area from 7am-ish if Stalker and I are up that early and get the water heater turned on. Body clock wil no doubt have me awake at 6am like it does everyday though

Can I be removed from the list please. I had a knee operation (partial replacement acually) 5 weeks ago and was going to leave it late to see if I'd be up to it. I might have been but it's too late now anyway. Recovery is going well and hoping to sneak a 1st ride on the SD today. It's the knee angle that's the problem on the SD, if I had a HD I'd be fine

I'm hoping to pop over on the Sunday so will say hello if I do.

So as the time draws ever closer my wallet is being emptied in preparation.... purchases this week include 1x generator, 2 x jerry cans, 4 x ratchet straps, knee sliders, toe sliders. Shaping up to cost more than Portimao did! Especially as I've been royally let down but two previous bookers so now have to fund my own van as well

Is it worth me picking up a 40T sprocket?

Ta……
I'm looking forward to trying these pads on the SDR. Brakes have always been awesome on my SDs but they took the Blades braking to a new level!
This is the bedding in procedure for them. I pretty much followed them and they work a treat.

BEDDING-IN PROCEDURE FOR SBS-DC
When changing for SBS-DC from using another type of brake pad material - Follow this Bedding-in procedure very carefully:
1. Remove existing friction material deposit from brake discs - using eg. emery paper #150.
2. Do a series of gentle brakings until pad-surface is in full contact with disc-surface.
3. After pad/disc contact is achieved - repeated short brakings building up heat in discs and pads until a very thin and uniform dull/black/darkblue layer of friction material (transfer film) is established on the brake disc.
4. Then a period to allow discs to cool again before proper use.
5. Then a few easy laps building up heat - ready for race use.

AND

Characteristics:
Thermal bedding-in and brake fade eliminated by use of DEST technology.
High initial bite
High friction level and progressive brake feel
High thermal stability
Consistent brake performance and brake lever position
Low pad wear
Rotor friendly due to transfer film generated on disc surface
Available for the majority of new Superstock, Supersport and racing brake calipers
Recommended for top level international and national championship road racing
For race use only

we're arriving mid afternoon so that the wee one will be slightly more settled than last time….. 3-4ish i should hazard a guess?
4-ish here. We can't get into holding area till after 5 so no point be super early.
I expect to be there before six.

Will bring booze and meat for the bbq.

Fingers crossed for a couple of dry days! !

Just got to fetch my 40T Renthal in the morning on the way to work. Hopefully monster some bikes out of the corners that way?

Just contemplating a tent or kipping in the van (since I'm solo hiring might get my monies worth!).
I wanted to put a 40T on the SDR. 17/38 is way too long for Cadwell. KTM Centre wanted £53 for non stealth though. Fook that!

Never run wets before but have them ready and mounted on wheels. Hoping it's as wet as we thought it might be at Portimao
And just like that the weather forecast changes completely....... Think I'll bring my weather forecasting stone as that seems to be more accurate

Crashfest lives up to it's name once more.

Keith and Monty have been tarmac surfing. Both are ok, bikes a bit worse for wear.
I'm sure one of the attendees will give more info at some point.
Comrades: From what I saw on the Saturday morning I think you English have shite summers So much time changing tyres. Wets on, wets off, wets on ... I
Beautiful summers day today. Hot (well uk hot) and dry all day. Some great fun on track although 1 SD has been down. Dubs had a little power nap through Hall Bends and didn't wake up for the hairpin. Had a little lay down there. Monty did ram Simon Beetson off at hall bends while he was riding my SDR. Not content with crashing his 10r he tried to crash his SD and take my SDR with him. Both went grass tracking but stayed upright. Still a day to go though so plenty of time for some more crash action.
Haha keep up the good work I'm liking the sound of this alternative take on a track day. Less time on the track and more time off it

Was a cracking day for it
There is more to come...........
Had a great time, really glad I went.

Loved Cadwell, good to be able to put some faces to names that I have seen on here for years and to see how the old tractor performed on track.

Shot some watchable footage so will do a trackfest virgin post when time allows and once I have figured out how to upload vdeo in a way that allows it to be seen here.

Thanks to all. Even Stalker was nice to me, figure that out.....
^-- Good to meet you --^
Superb weekend, absolutely shattered now mind!

Thanks to Stalker for shaving my lap times by 5 seconds after showing me the way round properly!
I came....I saw.....I crashed.

Crashfest - A Virgins Tale

(Edited video will be uploaded to this post when I get some done but here is a raw early session from day 2. The guy at the start is Superdan, the riding starts at about 1.40 and the SD I'm chasing and messing around with is Monty. Don't be too cruel!)

Here is the public dropbox link to the video. I cant seem to get it to show as a video link despite pasting it between the image and url brackets. perhaps a mod can fix that for me?

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/lvq0056m7e7w ... PR6114.MP4

I am not much shy of 50, have had the SD for about 4 or 5 years (can’t remember exactly) I have never ridden it on track, have done no track riding at all for five(ish) years and have never been to Cadwell Park. This is the story of my first Crashfest adventure…

A little context…

Before the SD I had had any number of IL4 sports bikes including the usual suspects from Honda and Yamaha. My last bike before the SD was a very nice K5 Gixer 1000 (all black) which got used on the track quite a lot. In fact I had almost given up road riding as it was hopelessly boring below three figures and my luck had been pushed a lot further than anybody’s luck ever should be.

The SD purchase was to try and enliven the road riding on something that would feel fun without doing 140MPH+. To an extent it worked, I like to go out, cane it for a bit, get a fix and then park it up knowing it’s there when the urge / opportunity next rises. It had a few thousand miles on it when I got it and about 6K now so it’s been enjoyed but not used all that much.

My last track day was in my sons first year and he has just turned six so I think about 5 years ago. Five years is a long break, the SD is a very different animal to that which I had been used to and I had never done Cadwell before. When I stopped I was a moderately swift fast group rider (never the absolute fastest but closer to the pointy end than the back) but that all seemed a long time ago.

SD.Net was my first bike forum experience and, in addition to the useful technical stuff I have enjoyed following the international SD community even pitching in every now and then myself. After so long I was really interested in meeting some of the people behind the posts and it was this as much as the chance to see if I could still ride a bike that made me sign up for this years Crashfest. I did so with some trepidation hoping I wouldn’t embarrass myself too much!!

I decided to go up Saturday, sleep in the van and ride Sunday / Monday. This turns out to have been a good choice. I got the only dry session Sunday morning (The first one) and Monday was glorious and sunny with perfect track conditions all day.

All the SD guys I met were great, even the ones not riding their SD’s. Special mentions go out to;

Gin Reaper for the suspension advice and for offering to swap his ropey old worn out SD for my nice low mileage one. I have considered it carefully and decided that we should  What with the Duchess and mini reaper all packed into a customised track day van you guys have got it sussed!!

To Stalker for showing me the proper line round one or two of the bends (not that I stuck to them nearly as often as I should) and for not laughing too loudly at my amazing inability to pass people miles slower than me because I have apparently forgotten how to do so!! (Video evidence to follow)

To Monty for the chase and follow sessions (yes on the bikes) allowing some good SD video footage to be shot and for having the balls to get on the SD having totalled his Kwaker on Sunday in quite a nasty crash.

To Dan for his excellence in chilling beer and burning meat. Also for helping me load / unload the van, gutted to hear that you crashed (again) on the Tuesday. Hope you and the bike are soon fixed up!!

To Schnauzer for parking his rather lovely Panigale next to my van and making everybody think it was mine for a while.

To John Man for making the epic journey from down under and taking a day out of an already heavy travel schedule to come show his face.

To Paul, Woody and everyone that I have forgotten to mention for being good company and for making it a laugh.

To the riding then…

Waiting for the first session on day one I felt a bit like a condemned man and a fraud about to be exposed. I had entered inters for day one and fast for day two. Once we got under way I started to relax and enjoy the riding but I was very inconsistent and just on the back of the inters pace. Didn’t help that on the first two laps my bike stopped under hard braking on a downhill section. Had it done so once more I would have come in but it ran perfectly after that for the whole of the meeting so I stayed out. Don’t think I overtook anybody but by the session end I was slightly more consistent and a bit faster so there was some progress.

Will post up a couple of laps from the first and last sessions of the day for comparison.

It then rained so hard we got that floor haze thing where the bouncing rain produces a few inches of fudged margin between atmosphere and ground. They closed the track for a while and I didn’t get out till after lunch. The rest of the day saw slowly improving laps and the pace crept up.

Quick video of the rain to follow...

For day two I should have been in the fast group and in truth the pace was there for that but I fancied staying in the inters and working on a few things so swapped and did that. First session was great, then went out for a session following and then leading (only because he let me) Stalker after which he gave me some good advice and didn’t laugh. Main things were to stop second guessing myself when overtaking (get on with it) and regarding body position. Taking the later first, after years riding sports bikes, hanging off the side and grinding sliders I seem incapable of doing the same on the SD. My arse slides over but my torso stays inline which sort of twists the body and is useless!! I never did seem to solve this, I think with enough track time I would eventually re learn the skill but for now at least it’s left the building. To get a proper fast lap time I would need to crack this.

If Monty posts some video you will be able to see for yourself.

The overtaking thing was really funny. I would close on a gaggle of bikes easily and then cruise round behind for ages before finally working through mostly on the brakes. I just couldn’t seem to trust that they weren’t going to suddenly change line as I was passing and take me out or I didn’t want to startle them. I’m not sure really but the result as the video shows is that I often rolled early on the straights or in the longer corners hanging well back until a sharp breaking area allowed an easy slow speed pass. Again I think that would probably return with practice, I used to be quite good at getting through traffic so it’s in there somewhere.

A few laps playing with Monty and chasing down some sports bikes will get pasted in here eventually

Overall I loved it  but what did I learn?

The SD, though old tech and way down on power is bloody good fun on the track and can easily keep up with modern sports bikes unless they are ridden with skill. A good rider on an SD will not be beaten by a modest rider on the latest Kwakker on a tightish track like Cadwell.

In acceleration out of slow corners and braking I think the SD actually has an advantage, especially in braking.

I learned that a van with a proper camp bed is infinitely better than a tent. I was actually warm and comfortable – superb!

I saw the Gin Reapers SD and learnt that SMR wheels fit the SD and look much better than the standard ones I have as does the SDR seat conversion and the anthracite side fairings. I am now actively in the market for all of these as swaps + cash or just outright purchase just in case anybody reading wants to deal.

I learned that round arka’s noise test at 98 DB.

Mostly what I learned is that there is no better way to shrug off the day to day concerns of life than turning fuel into noise on two wheels with a bunch of like minded idiots 

If its running again next year I will be there and I hope to see some of you before that so will keep an eye on any track stuff that’s being organised.
^^ Great write up. I will wait for the videos...
Man, well Crashfest is back living up to its name alright.

It's one in the morning and I am still up, more on that later.

Arrived Saturday night usual hellos, there were some new faces, Shadowman and a guy on SDR who had issues joining the forum, we did well pitching up out usual plot and obtained a good stomping ground. It has to be said there were a few less SD's than usual years mind, some last minute no shows too, those that could make it were missed.

As I was not riding till Tuesday I was able to get on the beer, and plenty of it, Motoronin would have been proud.

Spend a bit of Sunday watching the rain but it soon cleared up, I brought a gazeebo which somehow I lost to squatters rights to Dubs and Bikes and Woody?! However Dubs and naps as he was known is now Faffs and naps

Everyone was going well and had the gopro out for a bit playing around, was certainly wishing I was on track, but the toohomo was parked up ready for a blast on Tuesday.

By the time Monday came round there were a couple of fallers, Monty on his kawa (who then used his back up SD) and Faffs and Naps got a bit too close to some curb, quickly fixed thanks to Paul81's spares package.

Paul81's missus was amusing she was quite the feeder and had rabbit and hare stew or something, not sure if she had some traps set in the woodland section, however his kids made me laugh when they said "why cant you jump the mountain daddy?"

BBQ duty beckoned 3x a day, tried to get some funky gopro angles on track but MSV were having none of it, not even swivel cam. Ho hum.

Let Gin Reaper have a go on the Toohomo and I think he was impressed, mainly because he left jizz on the seat.

By the time Monday night came, Woody decided he would sell me his evening sesh so fired up the bike and had a good blast round, great fun but my god there were some mobile chicanes, was hard to get a clean lap in! got down to a PB of 1:41 so happy with that, pretty sure there was a theoretical sub 1:40 in there

Few guys had to go Monday night which was a shame.

Tuesday came around and was signed on, weather forecast said dry morning rain in PM so was going to have to be on it in the morning, went out got a bit of gopro footage and got my groove on, third session in Simon and Keith were pottering around on track, not quite sure what they were doing but overtook them both, knew it would not be the last time I saw them on that session as they would not take that lying down

So give it some beans and sure enough Stalker comes passed again, I tag on and follow him into the mountain, then suddenly Stalker lowsides the bike, spars everywhere, bit of a WTF moment as not many people bin it on that corner, I remember seeing his bike looking like it was going to fly up the tarmac so stood the bike up slightly, only to see Stalker heading towards my front wheel, my escape route was blocked by Stalkers limp body so a last ditch turn to the right to avoid his head, Armco is now heading towards me, I recall thinking "shall I just jump off the bike as I hit the barrier?" However gave it some brakes and crashed into the armco instead.

Next thing I remember was being on the floor winded and not being able to breathe, my back hurt, I made a mental check to see if I had broken my back, but was sure it was just a broken rib, medics arrive and I eventually hobble into the ambulance, not before asking the most important two questions "IS MY BIKE OK?" and "IS THE GOPRO STILL ON?", yes to both........my left eye was just stars, bit concussed me thinks.

Shallow breaths in the medical centre and a dose of morphine they take my leathers off, thankfully with out scissors, sat in my pants and two paramedics arrive and take me Grimsby, I was not that fussed about going as they cant do much for a broken rib or two but thought I best have an xray to mae sure no internal bleeding or complications.

Long story short all clear, broken rib, call fols take me back to cadders, bit out of it at hospital, think I got some texts buy was a bit off my face, so apologies if you got a random text back, all I was bothered about was my bike to be fair.

Get back to the track about 5:15pm, few people had gone as the rain hit earlier, everyone helped put my stuff in the trailer and car and drive myself home, not before viewing the footage obviously. Bike was not that bad, bars/fairng/clocks really.

My leathers have 3 massive green stripes down them, you can see its the paint from the armco, pretty crazy really. Could have a been a lot worse I guess.

Still unable to use my bed it hurts too much, my duvet adorns the sofa ata the moment as I have to sleep upright, right pain in the arse and not getting much sleep, however it gives me time to edit the footage from crashfest. So fear not, wont be at work for bit.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out and get sorted, need to sort out my garage and repair the bike.

Here is the original footage of the crash before it started going viral?! whats that all about? Will post up the crashfest footage in the next week.

Also Jmann turned up with his lad which threw me off guard, never realised who he was till he left?! Could have said hello dude!

mountain air………

……...that is all
I'm told that if you snap the throttle closed at just the right point the rear wheel hops off the ground but I'm fairly certain thats not how Josh Brooks or Karl Harris were doing it

Well as the dropbox public image link doesnt work on this forum I'm thinking a url might be more successful...

Out of curiosity if anybody knows what I did wrong in pasting the public image link between th Img brackets that stopped the picture from showing I would be grateful for a heads up. Its the corect link as the URL works fine.

Thanks
our fallen hero….. gratuitous ambulance shot!

Wondered when that would surface! That's my best "forced smile".

To be fair had quite a concussion, not seen stars like that before.....I knew they could not do much for a broken rib but just making sure no other complications or injuries.

No did not know her, I went to school with her brother though! Had a good chat on the way to Grimsby.
Bless you Dan.
Switched to Photobucket and it works...
