Well...... what a day...... First off.....It didn't end well

Rode to the circuit to meet klincky and the others, beautiful day after some really rotten weather over the weekend, had the promise of being a good day. Briefed as normal and out we went, few wet patches from the overnight rain but drying nicely. The previous day had been a Mazda MX5 track day and the cars had dragged mud onto the circuit in a spot or two but we shall come back to that ...... First session, riding in the fast group and some nugget on a rice burner dumps oil right across the track after failing to do his oil filter up properly, This meant that there was only one clear foot wide strip of tarmac to get through palmer corner - anyone venturing onto the concrete dust was rewarded with a very unpleasant squirming sensation as you were then comitted to the next 50ft on the oil..... not so good! Session one over still learning the track.....

Next couple of sessions passed without to much to report so the Gopro was mounted up, mine on the front and klincky's on the rear. Now those of you unfamiliar with snetterton will not know that the straights are quite long and the SD starts to run out of puff as you head into the 130mph bracket...... Colonel Klincks gas flowing and polishing of heads has definitely improved his SD.... don't let him tell you otherwise!! He F@#ked off down one of the straights and there was not a lot i could to catch him So i contented myself with improving my lines and getting quicker, two laps in and we return to the mud i mentioned earlier....... Running into agostini's a bit on the hot side i decided that it would be best to try and square the corner off and get on the power early as i could just see Klinck in the distance and was optimistically trying to gain a bit of ground. Unfortunately the cars from the previous day had pulled mud from beyond the kerb onto the circuit and it was just at this point that i started to wind on the power. The rear let go first and as soon as it did my first thought was .....

"thats not too bad" (I have ridden a bit of off road)

" its going to be very untidy but i think i can get it back in a straight line ....... oh bugger i seem to be looking down at the fuel tank...... maybe this isn't going to be so easy to collect as i thought"

"ouch the tarmac looked a lot softer than that!.... I'm probably going to get a finger wagged at me by the duchess as she'd made promise to be careful"

"interesting ..... whats that just departed from my bike bouncing down the track, aaah its a Gopro, ...... I'm probably going to get a blocking from Motoronin for that as well (its his Gopro!)

...... So fledgling track hero to zero in a second or so!

Gear held up well with a few scuffs to the leathers and a new helmet in the very near future, only damage to me - a couple of bruises on the hand and elbow! Fairly minor damage to the bike for a high side, Standard rear set and foot peg bent along with a broken clutch lever and some gravel rash to the tank wing - R&G crash bungs really did their stuff. The guys in the pits did the usual of swarming all over the bike to get it ready for the next session but as no pegs were available i had to sit the rest of the day out..... The bike ended up in good enough shape to limp home but i then subsequently found that the side stand switch was no longer working so every time i tried to select a gear it cut the engine....

Thanks Klincky for running me home, your a good man, even if you did cackle like a Hyena when we reviewed the GoPro footage!

Unfortunately on reviewing the footage we managed to transfer it to Klincks laptop so i'm unable to share it with you all at this time....... he assures me that he'll get it online as soon as he gets home..... evil bugger!

Great day though, and a really good track....

So the shopping list is as follows:

New Standard rear set and peg LHS
Front upper R&G Engine slider LHS
New clutch lever - Ebay special me thinks to match tother!
New R&G exhaust protector as Jubilee clip snapped (but it remained on the exhaust and did its job!)
LHS tank wing in Grey
And finally an R&G bar end slider

Oh yeah and a new side stand switch......

..... if anybody has any of the above bits lying around and would care to trade i would be most grateful

..... And finally as it turned out, i was already black flagged for drive by noise levels as i had whipped the baffles back out after being sound checked! Klicky commentted that i must have been spending to much time with Mr Motoronin as it seemed my prang had an air of ..... "The noise nazi's will never take me alive" about it!

Oh well..... Work tomorrow!

Toodle pip!

Nice write up James.

Firstly congratulations and welcome to the exclusive SD crash club glad there is no major damage done and your unhurt.

That was clearly a bad idea giving the footage to Klincky though serious slow motion to commence.....im can just hear the Klinky cackle now

Sounds like a fab day, was grand weather up here.

Sad news about the crash. You were lucky with the weather though.

That really boils my piss.

They know they are running a bike track day, and they know full well that the cars drag shit onto the track because they can't keep inbeween the curbs. The course car ALWAYS goes 'round the track prior to the first session and often goes out between sessions, so they know dam well if there is shit on the track.

So why don't they do something about it?
Considering how much they harp on about safety and how many forms they like you sign (most of this to cover their arse in the event of legal action) I find it amazing that start the day with a dirty track. Would they give us a discount because the track isn't clean?

Seriously, if you think the crash was really down to mud on the track (and I have every reason to believe you) send a stiff email to MSV.

On another note - taking your baffles out after the noise test is a bit of a stoopid move.

Best case you loose track time - worst case, the whole group looses track time.

Glad you're OK and the bike doesn't sound too bad.

Sounds like you both had an eventfull day,the weather was fantastic considering what we've just had over the weekend. Sorry to hear about your prang but glad to hear your ok,at least you've got it out the way now looks like we've all had a spill now on the SD's.

If the Colonel manages to actually get a video sorted out and posted up i'll be fooking shell shocked he's got about three years worth of footage that's not seen the light yet
Colonel_Klinck

Colonel_Klinck

Bad news about the off mate, good news is the bike sounds easily fixable and you live to ride another day and go to work tomorow and not lie in a hospital bed (been there done that - very boring).

Im amazed craig has stayed silent for this long, he must be home by now. Hes notoriously lazy normally with GoPro footage, interesting to see how quickly he manages to upload this bit of footage

The 1hz GPS is useless Klinky. Not quick enough and misses bits of the track. Your going that quick that 1 check per second ends up making the track into lots of little angles.

You'll get a 10hz receiver on eBay for under 50quid. That's the daddy. When you zoom in you can actually see your line through the corner on that lap.
Colonel_Klinck

Colonel_Klinck

Any recommendations to work with the iphone dude? Harry's site recommends either the 5Hz Emprum Ultimate or the 5Hz Dual XGPS150 but they are both 5hz and bluetooth. Also cost about £70
Viking

I use a Quartz one.

The sofware is the Trackmaster app. Mega impressive. Still not figured out all it can do but it shows lap times, splits, best possible lap based on best splits, top speeds, g forces. Also saves all info as a file and you can overlay it on a video so it shows your lap times and a map of the track in the bottom corner. I think Racechrono is much the same and works on Iphone of trackmaster doesnt

Like this..........

Urrrgh, that sound in the video as the bike goes down and scrapes along the track is like fingernails on a blackboard!

Glad you are OK, now feeling slightly apprehensive about visiting Snetterton next month...

Don't let it put you off. It's a really fun track and apart from someone dropping oil all over the track on the corner before James crashed (you can see the white cement dust in the vid) most incidents were people going straight on at corners. All that said there should not have been mud on any part of the track full stop.

...... What I didn't realise was that its me reconnecting with the bike that dislodges the gopro!

Also the reason the foot peg got so mullered was because the bike slides tank first down the track.....lucky! I think if the peg had been able to fold there may have been more damage to the bike itself?

Nice footage Jame's,Go Pro's are virtually undestructable they dont half take a beating Looks like you've been very unlucky being right on that muddy bit just as you're getting on the gas and having it on camera answers all the questions you'd be asking yourself if you hadn't Good to see you up and walking away mate.

I'm amazed that CK managed to get this footage up so quick you've obviously got something on him that you'll have to share with the rest of us I've got one of his southern fluffy pink pillows which he left at my place last week which i'll hold to ransom in the future
Colonel_Klinck

Colonel_Klinck

I can't see you getting anywhere with an email tbh.

I agree, it's crap the track was dirty. But if I'm reading your post right you'd done a few sessions before the crash. So the dirt had been there every lap on every previous session. So, and I'm not meaning to come across as a dick here, you rode through it and got on the throttle at the same time when you knew the dirt was there.

Here is a vid of Snetteton. Looks bloody slow watching it back now Last session of the day, plenty of apex's missed and room for lots of improvement. Bloody good laugh though Fastest lap of the day according to Harry's Laptimer Pro was a 2.27.41. Hoping to shave a few seconds off that next time out. Going to try and get Jody to tow me round. Or at least for as long as I can stay with him.

I recently bought spares from R&G. One upper and one lower slider. Prepare to have your arse raped with no hint of lube though Phone is the only way they sell them it seems.

The uppers are identical both sides so it makes little difference. The lowers have a slightly different mount left to right.

Just buy GB racing stuff,it's better, they give fantastic after sales service and unlike R&G are not a bunch of to**ers in my humble opinion

I hope i never have to replace any of it again but if I do I think I will go with GB. R&G are a rip off and their attitude does indeed suck.

Which is the company that replace any bungs after a crash? I like the "look" of R&Gs but may go for the free replacent jobs.
