Ok here goes. First off all what a fooking awesome track Oulton Park is First time there for me and although it only takes a couple of sessions to learn it, its such a fast circuit with a couple of blind corners so it takes a while before you can commit. Its super narrow and if you get it wrong its on to the grass at speed and so most likely off.
ACU day on Friday went really well. We had been promised rain for both days all week but it never arrived on Friday. I don't mind riding on wets but I'd rather learn the track in the dry. First time out on the SDR and the first session the rear shock as clearly not working properly. Was getting zero grip and was all over the place. Headed to see the suspension guy and he made a few changes to get it working properly. Spent the morning leaning it and building speed. Managed to put in some 1.57s in the afternoon which isn't bad. SDR was brilliant. So planted, loved to corner and the extra grunt is awesome
The promised rain arrives in the night. Its's stopped by the time we get up and although the wind is drying some of the concrete areas the track is wet. Stalker is doing the open sprint race as well as Endurance so his qualifying is just before Endurance. Some people are on wets but we are being told half the track is wet and the other half almost dry. Stalker heads out on Racetecs and his session is red flagged and he pops back to the garage and says its too wet for them. GinReaper and Ronin who have once again stepped up and driven for hours to help out get my bike swapped to 2CTs as its the closest to an inter we have and I don't want to ruin a rear rain tyre just to qualify in what is after all a 3 hour race.
FInally head out. Its a tad scary in places. Turn 1 Old Hall, which is a corner I struggled to go flat out at all weekend is dry all the way through until the exit when you need to get on the gas 2CTs are good in the damp but my head isn't allowing me to crack open the throttle. Its then dry all the way until Clay Hill (my fav part of the track) It's wet all the way through here and there is a fresh section of tarmac that is in the braking zone that looks super slick and is just that. I put in 20 mins and manage to make 1.58s which considering the conditions and tyres I'm happy with. Stalker heads out and gets down into the 1.56s and we qualify 5th.
Racetecs go back on and we kick off at 1pm. I start the race again and its the fab Le Mans start. I make a good start and am 2nd into turn 1. I manage to hold 2nd for 6 laps and am seeing 1.56s on the board. Then get passed by an RSV4. Become aware that right foot peg doesn't feel right at all. Glance down and the fooking thing is working its way lose It's had 1 and 1/2 days to do that and it decides to do it 7 laps into the race. I come into the pits and with the adrenaline flowing make a bad decision. We have to do mandatory 3x 3 min pit stops in the race. We should have done one then but I decide to go back out after a quick tighten losing us 1 min at least. I head back out and am now having to get past the back markers. Do another 7 laps or so and pit board say come in.
Stalker heads out and after 10 mins we know something is wrong when he doesn't appear. Race control tell us he's snapped his chain at Island. Thats a bloody long way from the pits and he has to leg it back in leathers with transponder so I can go back out. Poor fooker. Reaper heads off on mountain bike to meet him when we find out where he is coming from. By that stage he is only 300 yrds from us and looking fit to drop. We've lost 19 mins and when I head out so day is over. Maybe we should have packed up then but that's not what its about. I do 30 mins and come back in. Stalker is looking deflated and says its over because he was hoping they might let him use his ZX10. That of course would be an unfair advantage. I tell him to jump on mine and get out there. Again we should have thought about it and just made it to the finish and taken some points in the championship but adrenaline is funny thing and is screaming at you to just go go go. He puts in some fast laps and does a 1.54 which is pretty quick. I head out for my last session and am feeling pretty fooked half way through, really need to work on my fitness. Oulton is such a physical track. I come in and Stalker heads out again for final stint. About 10 mins in it starts to drizzle. That horrible stuff that isn't rain but is enough to start making the tarmac wet. Suddenly the red flag goes out, not something they like to do in Endurance unless its serious, normally its a safety car that goes out. They have stopped the riders between Druids and Lodge. Lodge into Deer leap is the last corner that is a big dip that goes off camber before you come over Deers Leap trying to keep the front down and onto the pit straight. A rider comes over who came through before they stopped the riders and says he thinks its a KTM that highsided and the rider is laying in the gravel not moving We leg it towards race control and they say 2 riders have crashed at different places and one is No6 which is our number They eventually let the other riders though and we watch them into the pit lane hoping Staker is amongst them but he isn't They tell us to head to medical centre and wait there. He was knocked out and they are bringing him back in an ambulance. I'd be lying if I said a small part of me wasn't wondering about my SDR but the main thing of course is Stalker. They come out after 10 mins telling us he is conscious again and they are observing him before making decision whether he needs to go to hospital. We decide to head to scruteneering and check out my bike. I want to see it and don't want to see it at the same time. They have it locked up as its been involved in a serious incident. They let us in though and it looks like its been in a proper crash but not as bad as I feared. Bars which were straight now look like clip on on right side. Race mask is hanging down, bendable leaver is bent is a way it was never designed to do. Carbon end cap on Akra is cracked. Rear set is half gone, crash bungs did their job big time and looking at the way they are pointing the bike entered landed backwards on the right side on a right bend which is kinda the opposite you'd expect from a highside. Word is he was a good 12ft in the air so he did it with style! Left hand side of the bike is untouched, phew. So all in all not too bad considering the size off the crash.
We head back and they let us in to see him. He's looking slightly dazed and can't remember a thing of what happened and is of course being super apologetic about my bike. Tell him not to worry about it, it aint too bad and main thing is he is ok. The piss taking starts and we have a laugh with the doctor. Ronin then breaks the bin by sitting on it They release him to our charge. Team Green are top lads and Monty drives his van and him back home before heading back to Weymouth with Keith. They managed to get 1st place this time in in our class so are leading the championship. We will need to finish above then in the final 3 rounds to stand a chance. With 2 of them being very well suited to the Superduke we have a good chance. So its repair time and then on to Donnington is a few weeks time.
