MH air box on my 990 adventure

I was totally fed up with the fueling on a used 2007 990 I purchased this feb. I installed a HT racing 2 into 1 exhaust system, G2 throttle, 3 up on the rear sprocket, BMC air cleaner and installed a Akro map @ the dealer. It ran very poorly and was getting 25 to 28mpg. Next I removed the SAS system still no better. Next I installed O2 eliminators and it improved some. Was thinking of the tune ECU route but to busy to take the time to study and have no clue how to build a proper map so that was out. Found out Bazzaz is coming out with a auto tune unit in a few weeks and very hopeful that would cure my bike!

So a few weeks decide to check out this site thinking Duke owners have the same issue and how do they cure the bad fueling and joined the site. The Motorhooligan Airbox was so much more popular than on the other site Adventure Rider that i was visiting and I knew the bike was running very rich with the Akro map. So I decide to take a chance and order a MH air cleaner and install it, thinking if it still sucked I could drop $500 for the Bazzaz unit in a few weeks.

First i really like the room it frees up and the quality of the air box, the stock box on the 990 just takes all the room and you can not get to any part of the top of the motor. But I am so happy with how the bike is running! It is very smooth over the entire rpm range, if I wack open the throttle it rips vs coughing, it will finally power wheelie is 1st and 2nd. Thank you guys for putting your feedback on the site, it gave me hope to try the Box and it really worked.

Im with you. MH airbox was a great investment... Except me MPG is still bad cause I like to hear the twitter of the injectors under load...

Great post Ken, glad we could help you out and get your adventure tip top, all models are welcome here, we get loads of info from the adventure site too for maintenance jobs and stuff.

After two tanks of fuel it is back to it's old bad manners. I pulled the plugs and they black and sooty, so is the tail pipe. It is ok up to 4000 and runs really bad to 5000.. if I give it WOT it is ok. Cleaned the map sensors and checked the coils, and for air leaks. So I ordered a Bazzaz controllers and the auto tune unit. I want this bike to run or it is going down the road! I will install this weekend and let the unit self map with a target 13.2 to 1 air fuel for starters.
I really miss my carbs some times!
