520 Conversion Kit

Due to a forced sabatical (fell off supermoto bike at Adam's a week ago), broken collar bone and a couple of ribs, I've decided it's time to focus on the SD. Got over 10K miles so it's about time for a new chain and sprockets. Was gonna go 525 but decided against it as the 520 parts were so reaonably priced.

I just purchased a 16T CS sprocket and two 38T rears (7075-T6 - black of course). The front was $25 and the rears were $56. Also purchased a DID 520ZVMX Gold chain for $135. This should be a pretty stout set up that will eliminate just under 2lbs of rotational (and partial unsprung) weight as well as free up a couple of ponies at the wheel. Will look the dogs bollox as well.

Happy to post the suppliers if anyone is interested. Pretty good prices on this stuff.

Not sure who to credit with this info, maybe JehadJoe. Found these sprocket suppliers using the search function, called them and got parts ordered.

FS 16T - $25 Advanced Precision Machine (Randy) 888.347.7262

RS 38T - $56 PMP Sprockets 888.668.6432

DID 520 ZVMX 120 link $135 Motorcycle Online Store (Robin) 800.380.6016 (one of, if not the, strongest 520 chains you can buy) (www.shopmotorcycleoninestore.com)

Will post up results and photos (if I can figure it out) after install. Mind you it may take a while (ribs are killing me, even with the good drugs the doc gave me).

My chain an sprockets will be duw for a change at the end of this season and 520 is the route i will be taking

Ill be interested to see how the 520 chain holds up under the torque in the long run

Got the rear sprockets and chain (still waiting on the front sprocket).

The 38T rears (anodised black) looks fantastic. Lightening slots look good and the quality is first class, especially considering they machined and anodised them after I ordered them on Monday, shipped them Tuesday and I received them Thursday. Now that's customer service.

Be happy to post pics if I knew how. Will email it to anyone willing to post it up here if they want it.

Here is the rear from PMP (looks good). I think it'll look great on the bike with the all gold DID ZVMX (inner and outer links plated).

Imgur is reducng the resolution so the picture could be better, sorry. I know it's not the camera.

How much faster wear do you anticipate with the 520 compared to steel 525?

The price savings you had will probably make up for the extra wear.

Not sure. There is a pin to pin tolerance on all chains so I will find this info and keep an eye on it. The aluminium rear will obviously wear quicker than a steel sprocket...that's why I bought 2 of them. Same set-up their running on Moto GP, WSB and AMA superbikes. Granted they change them fairly frequently but I think on my 120HP SD they should hold up fine. All boils down to quality of chain and I bought the best currently available.

I think the torque and abuse are the real culprits on the chain wear along with poor maintenance of course.

I have a tendency to go through rear tyres very quickly and assume that chain wear would go hand in hand with it. Switching too a softer material with a smaller load surface might have me only getting a few rears to a chain/sprocket set.

Lighter is righter though, if the price/wear isn`t too great.

Mine still has a some life left in it but when it`s due I`ll be checking back here to see how you made out.
