I just rechecked for interference with wires or hoses but nothing rubs or touches. It seems that the gas tank is too long and even the front end is scraped from touching the triple clamp on its way closed. The tank sits at 2 o'clock offset for the bolt to be screwed in.

The bike is on the rear race stand (in my living room!!) so I can't imagine the frame flexing...

When i refitted my tank last week it was on a ABBA stand which pivots at the swing arm bolt, perhaps that allowed the bike to flex a little in the right direction?

Is there some way you can jack up the bike from underneath to allow something similar? Maybe then it would lengthen the distance between headstock and rear subframe to allign the holes....?

Mine wasnt perfectly alligned but by lift the tank up 10mm it allowed teh bolt to angle and reach into the threaded section by the headstock and then i just dogged it up.

I can tell you're running out of patience here man, but dont lose it and end up ruining your bike through an attempt to bodge it....you'll only regret it later.

good luck!!

if it's the front tank bolt that won't go in ( and no obstructions as you suggest ) then take the 2 rear pins out that the tank hinges on, and try then , tank is a pig to line up..... the hinge pins will be a pig to get back in too, but not as difficult as your front at the monent!!!
Thats why slotted ninges are available , to move the tank back slightly so it lines up with the front mount/ bolt...... moto hooligan does the slotted hinges... you get the idea if you see them.....
I took all the bolts out on mine if removing the tank..... made it easier. but in hind sight the slotted hinges would've been great...
I'm sure some peeps on here have taken a file to the mounting holes of the hinges to get a bit more movement back over....
good luck
