I think that your dealer is trying to scare you. He is partially correct. Generally speaking, a bike "can" run leaner when installing an after market exhaust system and it "can" damage the engine. In my experience, bikes that run lean to the point where they will damage the engine will not run well at all. They will most likely not rev out or stumble and spit under acceleration. i.e. you will know when the engine is running critically lean. What some people do not realise is that modern OEM manufactures have such sophisticated exhaust systems that after markets can only improve the performance on very little.

My experience with the SD and exhaust systems is that the "slip on" type didn't have a noticeable improvement over standard and the full system was only slightly better than stock. Running the AKRO map made the bike incredibly rich and killed MPG's.

In my experience: Out of the three different maps to choose from (stock, updated stock and AKRO)the updated stock was the closest one to ideal as you can get.

What background does your dealer have in regards to the stock map and open exhaust on the SD? Does he have a DYNO with an o2 sensor that he can show you the results that the engine does run lean to the point of damage? I have done this research and spent hours on the DYNO switching exhaust pipes and uploading different maps. I would not run my bike with a setting that would damage the engine.

With that being said, it doesn't mean that everyone, everywhere can run the stock map with open exhaust. Do your research and experiment as needed. I am only saying that my bike, in my area of the country, at the climate that I ride in, runs fine with the stock map and full AKRO exhaust.

A couple of days ago I installed the full Akro system and a Power Commander. I removed the oxygen sensors and loaded the "Akro slip on baffles in" map. Looking at the map I saw it was adding more fuel in most places but really enriching the mixture at greater throttle positions and higher rpms. The bike ran like crap in these instances to the point where it was bogging and hesitating under full throttle from 5000 rpms and up.

Line 9nine0 I am now also running the stock "advanced" KTM map and the bike runs very well. This map enriches at low and medium throttle openings and rpm but leans out the mixture slightly at greater throttle positions and rpms. I may make a few slight adjustments to it but for the most part it will do for now. Without a dyno I am really flying by the seat of my pants anyhow.

I am going to have the bike dyno tuned in the next week or so and am curious to see how that map compares to the one I am currently running.

I am considering creating a "fuel economy" map from the dyno generated map for use when I go on long road trips. I plan on leaning out the midrange slightly from 4000- 6000 rpms at moderate throttle positions. The other idea I had was to simply use the buttons on the power commander to accomplish something very similar.

As far as what resistor to use when removing the SAS this thread may help:

I'll be getting KTM's most updated map for the SD next week and then I'll try removing the SAS. From there I'll decide if I want to run the Akro map with my Leo's. I'm sure my dealer tech won't like that but I'm going with it.
