#2The heat shields come off when the pipes go (decorative stuff above them stays). Not sure about the HP difference. I have the slip ons and like the sound well enough that I would keep them even if the power were down. I think Dr F has a good feel for approximate HP of the various configurations.
I've not heard of a smaller evaporative canister. You can remove the can if you like - lots of threads on here about how to do it.
You might also consider an air filter. I got my DNA filter from these folks: http://www.alternatecycle.com/index.html

#4I removed my evap canister and everything associated with it (other than the tank vent hose and the valve) and haven't had any trouble.
You'll have to turn the blade into a track bike!
