Bike won't start.....SD 990

Bike working fine until...

ditched my R tail and put oem duel seat back on.
Re wired electrics for lights (blew 15 amp fuse in process)
Uploaded a map via Tune ECU (first time user)

Now fuel pump primes but nothing happens when you press starter.

Checked:
Side stand is up
Not touched Front cowl so not tip over
Bike in neutral
Checked starter relay and fuses
No errors on dash
Battery is ok

Think I may have blown something trying to hook up rear lights and indicators, all work now. Or something to with map I uploaded.....

Thoughts?

Kill switch position?

Does it start with clutch pulled in?
Superdan

Superdan

Forgot to put yes checked the kill switch and tried with clutch in.

Hmmmm I'm stumped.

Check every fuse?

Is there such a thing as an 'engine starter' fuse?

Nil desperandum - have a look at the wiring diagram and you'll see a diode, located in the headlight unit, that's linked to the clutch switch and, from memory, the side stand switch - check diode (swop out with one under seat) and wiring into diode base/connector.

KTM alarm/immobiliser fitted?

Did you start the bike successfully after the seat change over (i.e just mechanical mods) before you started messing about with the map (i.e ECU, electronic mods)?

If the answer is yes then it must be the ECU.

If the answer is no then it's a lesson in not to mix too many mods together because it always ends in tears!

I've changed over my seat unit a few times over the years and all problems I've ever had relate to the alarm system so that was say first response until I saw you didn't have one.

I'd just start a methodical process of re-doing everything you did again to make sure everything is correct. Not sure how to advise as to the ECU stuff because I've never done it - anything to do with computers terrifies me. If it was a Mac I could imaging that there is a little button that I accidentally checked that prevented the engine running and some IT guy would just come have a look and uncheck the box whilst looking at me like I was a moron.

Does changing over seat include replacing undertray, etc ie removing and refitting fuseholder, bank of relays, etc?

If so, you've probably just dislodged wiring into base of fuseholder or relays or similar.
Superdan

Superdan

Not started it since I last rode it TBH.

Yes you need to change undertray will check relay connections
Superdan

Superdan

Relays seem fine.

Swapped the little relay with a two pins at right angles from headlight unit to next to fuse box, no joy. Still primes the fuel pump but won't turn over.

Check all of the fuses with a multi meter or replace them with new. I had the exact same thing happen when I installed a quick shifter and to a tech friend that I "checked" all of the fuses and they were all good. He pulled the fuses and came to the same conclusion...........an older tech took one look at one of the fuses and said "this one is blown" the other tech friend ran for the multi meter to call him on his opinion...........yep it was blown and barely noticeable. Nothing burnt or any discoloration just a hairline split.

Just saying.

If that's not it then at least you'll have the multi meter out to check where the power ends

I know you said you checked the side stand switch but the symptom sounds exactly like when the side stand is down. How did you check it? When mine went the only way I fixed it was to get a new switch and it was immediately OK. The other thing is check the little switch on the clutch lever that needs is pressed in when trying to start the bike in gear. (Just trying to think of any place where the ignition is cut in some situations).

Comrade Dan: My reading of what you are saying is that the starter won't crank. Is this correct? You also say that you've checked the starter relay and fuse. In checking you have checked the 30amp fuse down next to the battery box haven't you? Next you've checked that the relay clicks on or at least has power on one side. My memory is that the starter relay gets fed via the ECU so where, when you blew the fuse, did the smoke get out? I've also had a shitload of fuses of late that look ok but are in fact blown. Don't trust the eyeball trust the multimeter.

Thanks for all the replies, checked most of the things mentioned.

Now fixed.

Think I had uploaded a .hex file rather than the correct file type to Tune ECU? either way I uploaded another map and fired up first time, damn 1290 owners infecting my bike with their gayness.
Superdan

Superdan

It should be a .hex file...........

Maybe I did not upload it correctly...or perimeters on left side were wrong. Either way it appears to be sorted

Probably not a good idea to be on Pornhub at the same time as downloading the map.
