Braced swing arm

Jody

Jody

Someone on here mentioned a braced swing arm recently, they were well impressed with it. I assume it was one of our racers ???

Is it something I can buy, or do I need to get one braced for me? Who does it and how much am I looking at????

Anyone got any pictures of one either on or off the bike?

More power isn't really an option as it'll void my warranty (and tbf my SD has plenty anyway) but if I could improve the handling beyond the "superb" it is now, it'll be even more fun on track !

Search GoGo's threads dude as it was his bike. Or he might have posted a link to it in the What do you want from new Superduke thread.

Would an RC8 swingarm fit?

Hi Jody,

I'm on the same mission this year. I have photos of Go-go's swing arm mods for inspiration but I am currently working on my own drawings to mod the SD swingarm. I have a spare one purchased from Ebay all ready to go and I've found this company which I think has very good credentials, (ex Spondon) but is affordable rather than the Harris option. Check out their website photo gallery, they've done loads of one-off frames and modded a lot of swing arms.

Not got a confirmed price yet but need to send them my drawings. Was going to get them to do the welding and then get the whole lot black powder coated, (if they couldn't do it).

IMHO bracing the swingarm will only make things look prettier (at our level)

Look how fast the battle bikes were lapping without such things!

You will be afr better off taking your cash and throwing it at a suspension tuner for a good old revalve/respring etc and set up for your weight/riding style! Thats where the main gains are gonna come from to begin with

If you still want to to go ahead with the swingarm this was the last post on the subject -

Ash, of course you're right, I'm only doing it because I've run out of other stuff/projects to do.

But last time I was lapping Brands Hatch at just under 1/2 second under the WSB record I thought to myself, "Hmmmmm, I can detect the swing arm flexing significantly at this point round Clearways upsetting the geometry and suspension settings I've carefully set up with hundreds of hours track time. What I need to get the edge - and that last 1/2 second - is a 25% increase in torsional strength at a midway point without losing lateral stiffness under heavy acceleration."

I've got a spare swingarm, maybe get a discount for more than one

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm not thinking I'm fast enough to notice a huge difference, and tbh while running 2 different SD's in the summer they both had completely different suspension settings and I can't say I noticed !!

But GoGo said in the what do we want thread....

Beefier Swingarm. I've been lucky enough to race the Superduke, the Superduke R, and the Superduke R with a braced swingarm - same tracks, same conditions, same tyres, all different configurations of Superduke. Trust me the braced swingarm is a huge improvement. The bike changes direction more positively, turns at high speed more stable and consistent, and (for some reason I can't explain why) seems to put the power to the ground more predictably - you can drive out harder, earlier, with less lateral movement/wallowing. Doesn't take race pace to feel the difference either. Those little arms flex..

and the only times I've really had an issue was high speed cornering (as Ash saw at Bedford) and when putting the power on coming out of corners. I've been in touch with one custom fabricator and asked for a ball park figure to brace my swingarm (and asked if I could get discount for more than one!). I'm not sure what to expect but I think it will be cheaper than a suspension overhall (the one for my SM was £500!!). I also don't think there is a lot of point getting the suspension set up for my weight as I am an average weight, so the suspension is set up for my weight anyway.

I'll be keeping this thread updated as and when I find out more.

I have just hit the road again on my 990 after a complete rebuild of the swing arm.I have braced it similar to GoGo Racing SDR990 but went a little further with a Superbike Quick change set up similar to Harris Performance. The bracing was needed because I track the bike frequently and swing arm wollowing and suspension squatting was quite noticeable.I'm also forever rotating my tyres from road to track and back to road after each trackday so I was after a faster, easier way to change tyres so studied up on Endurance Racing quick wheel change engineering and decided on the Harris Performance set up.I was amazed at the improvement I could feel just on the public road.It felt like someone was holding up the rear end while I was riding and I was turning in way to early because the rear didn't squat and sharpened my steering angle.Powering through corners before was good but now it feels like I'm on a rail because the rear end is so stable.Just in case some of you may be thinking maybe my suspension was'nt set up right in the first place(which is a fair call)I have had some of the best suspension gurus Australia has to offer to help set up my bike.I currently have Frank Pons,a very well known Ozzy and international tuner rebuild my suspension and had him trackside helping with adjustments at Toprider Track and Coach days in Sydney. One of the reasons for the improvement is less weight on the rear end.I machined the axle out of 7068T6(35% stronger than 7075T6) and weighs 1/3 of the steel original. The large rear caliper and bracket are replaced with an under slung Bellinger billet calliper with the bracket as part off the axle slider(almost 50% weight saving ).Apart from the stainless DIY slider adjuster bolts, all the fastening hardware is Titanium and the chain is a 520 DID heavy duty item which is a kilo lighter than the 525.before the project was started I painstakingly machined every surface of the swing arm so with all the bracing and new axle sliders, the weight is the same as the original swing arm.Unless someone can tell me how to post pics from my 4 year old IPad,I am unable to post pics.Cheers

Use photobucket for uploading the pics. I for one would like to see this.

Iv'e tried photo bucket and it fooked up my IPad by continually downloading pics all the time which disabled the screen.I tried Flicker with my daughters help and she could'nt get it to work.Maybe IPads are unable to send pics to forums like superduke.net.Cheers

Mate, I didn't read this post until I'd answered you PM which explains why I mentioned the "race" guy in the States. Of course reading this post I remember it was GoGo.

Getting pictures up on here is pretty simple with Photobucket I find. not sure what problem you are having. I use a Mac and I just open Photobucket and drag a picture (jpeg) from my desktop onto the photobucket upload box. Then when it's uploaded I click on the picture and to the right a load of code comes up which I copy and paste into this space with my text. Then when I press the Preview or Submit button it comes out as the picture.
