Cam Coating Flaking Out / Off

Winter maintenance time, doing a valve adjust...way over due but things were not out that bad...Suprised my self when I looked at the mileage....frikin' 17K already and I just put it on the road last spring, and this is not my only bike. I have the clocks set to take milage of gas stops so I never see the bikes total milage unless I flip the screen.
Anyway, as we doing the valve adjust I noticed that on one of the cam lobes the hard coating is flaking off. The missing coated area is about 1/8 inch square, at this time.
Question: Is this common with the 08 SD? Should I be looking for a replacement cam for the next valve adjust?

Post some pics but no its not normal. Seen it on here maybe once or twice. Pretty sure on those occasions KTM covered it.

Cannot think that a damaged cam is good for 9,000 miles if you're suggesting what I think you are.

My 2005 with 22.000km's also has a few scratches, seen the last service.

Not too worried about it has some has already been talked around here.

If not covered by warranty ( doubt it very much has it's a 2005 second hand bought in 2008 with some service done on non offcial shops ) may be looking for upgrades

Not sure there is such a thing is there? Tripodave bought some high lift cams. All they did at best was give a bit more top end but lost in the middle. Although he did fit high compression pistons at the same time so its hard to know exactly what they did on their own.

Looks like they loaded. I took photos of all the cams. The ones in question are the last three photos. Front Cylinder, Intake cams. Look for rear shock and radator as benchmarks.
Thanks for any and all information M8's.

I've just done the shims on my '08 as well. 22,000klms and replaced rear exhaust shims only.

I noticed some minor flaking on one rear exhaust lobe, about one mm square. Not panic stations yet, but I'll keep a close eye and be religious with my oil changes.

Here are the pics. Doesn't look good dude Can you even buy one cam? Doesn't the cam bearing bridge match the 2 cams? Or is it that it just matches the head?

what oil are you using

There has been a reduction in the ZDDP additive inclusion rates by oil manufacturers in the last 3 years, ZDDP helps to prevent this type of valvetrain wear/damage during cold starts,
Racing oils which are labeled for off road use will have higher levels of ZDDP,
The greens strike again

Thanks for setting the photos up Colonel K.
What I heard from my bud / KTM wrench was if I screw up the bridge and I buy / find another cylinder with the mating bridge.
I want to say I heard that all the cams are the same and can be purchased one at a time.
I don't need a hotter cam with more lift with the power WFO. I want mid range controllerable power for a hard charge coming out of corners.
I need to get a cost on a new cam. Really don't want to screw up this bike. It's my fav out of 20 I had over the 46 years I been riding.
