Went to my dealer in the end to get oil......he recommended I put 10w60 in rather than the recommended 10w50. So I've taken his word for it and bought some. Checked it wouldn't give me any warranty issues, he assured me it wouldn't and it would be better for the bike.

Another thing, the SD oil loss level is acceptable up to 600ml per 1000 km! But if you think that's bad, the new 690 SuperMoto is 800ml per 1000 miles! And no, it's not a 2-stroke!

Motorcycle oil is developed so it works well with a "wet clutch", that is, one that is lubricated by the same oil as the engine.
Cars usually have dry clutches. If you owned a dry clutch BMW bike (such as any boxer or older K series) it would be perfectly ok to use car oil, but with a "normal" motorcycle, specialy a high performing one, that´s a no-no.

I use 15w50 synthetic motorcycle oil (that´s the oil recommended by the KTM dealer i do my maintenance at).

My SD uses maybe like 100 ml every 1000 kms or so.
