Chain alignment after adjustment

After I adjusted my chain and was checking the alignment I noticed that the adjustment marks on the adjusting block ar rather widely spaced.

But the index marks on the swing arm are terrible. They are two half circles whose diameter is nearly as big as the space between the marks on the adjusting block!!!

I did the best I could but what do you more experienced folks do to assure that your chain is properly aligned? Any special tool that helps?

Thanks in advance,
Frank

I've not adjusted the chain on my SD yet, but on my fireblade i used to measure in from the end of the swingarm to the rearmost face of the adjuster block and ensure the measurements on each side were the same.

String-Lining your wheel is the easiest way to get your wheel straight, and costs nothing... if you have 4m of string laying about.

The marks on your swingarm are a guide, and shouldn't always be trusted. 01-04 GSX-R1000s are all about 1 mark out from one side to the other.

Like Freestyler, I use a Laser alignment tool.

To assist in ensuring perfect adjustment when using this tool, carry out the work when the bike is on a paddock stand, not on the side stand.
