Chain and Sprocket - wisdom please!

Hi all,

On the way to work I pulled away from another SD and embarrassingly my chain snapped. I have time to wait a day or two until I order a replacement but I thought I'd ask your opinion forst to be sure I'm spending my money on the right parts.
I have a 2009 990R, just the chain itself would be a bad option so looking to replace the whole chain/sprocket set.
Got the bike second hand and its the first time I've had to replace these. Google search wont show me the standard sprocket sizes, and all these eBay ones are different sizes quoting the same year!
Standard sizes aside, I've been thinking of modding it a little for better acceleration (I don't enjoy riding ANY naked bike over 110-120).
I've read about a bit on the forums and was thinking of either standard (whatever that is) or a 16/41 set-up.

Could anyone please deter me / recommend / suggest a brand? Doesn't have to be orange, its the one part of the bike that gets covered in

oh, and because you're a bunch of bike perverts..

Thanks in advance,

Hi,check the search function for gear commander, which lets you change the gearing and play with the settings.

41 might be a bit too low, 40 seems to be about the norm, will add plenty of mumbo to it.

Having tried a few I think 16 / 40 suits the bike best. Gives about 140 indicated top speed but strong acceleration and wheelies well if you like that sort of thing

Awesome job, lads!

..now to peruse the online marketplace and see what can be found.

Any idea why you can't seem to get a decent steel set anymore, it's all bleedin' aluminium - as if it's saving you weight..

16:39 for me - Redline supply an OE component chain and sprocket kit.

16:39 would lower the top speed and increase acceleration a little?

We don't have roads worthy of 140mph, would rather trash any other bike to 120

Suits my daily commute = 50% motorway/A-roads and 50% central London.

I like your style

I'll shout when it's arrived and fitted, if the sun's out you'll have to show me your local twisties.

--edit--

.. the rear tyre in the above pic shall be chicken-strip free by then, we have some good weather now

I have a 16/40. I have Renthal chain with OE sprockets.

How did you're chain snap! Did you recover it? Lucky you weren't hurt, I've had a friend loose a leg with a broken chain.

Oil it and care for it when you get a new one!

I've just replaced mine last week

I've got a renthal 16t front
a supersprox 40

And a did vx 525 chain 110 links

Looks and rides the nuts

Aaaah! Just checked and the previous owner stuck a 16/38 combo on there.
Also realised that the higher rear cog is faster acceleration - 16/40 it is

I have a 120pin chain on the current setup, any idea on length for the new (larger) sprocket before I throw money at it?

Thanks for the model and shop suggestions!

the chain I had ordered was far too long, solved that hurdle with an angle grinder

love the acceleration now, its insane - I'd fully recommend this set up to any fellow riders.

I recently replaced the chain and front/rear sprockets on my 08 SDR. The chain is an EK-3D Black and Gold, front sprocket is oem 16 tooth and the rear is a Stealth alloy/steel combo 41 tooth. It's a lot of fun with that gearing but i don't recommend it if you enjoy long rides at or above freeway speeds. I think i will stick with it though as i don't use the bike to commute to work or anything like that it's purely for fun. I'm sure you will have great times with your gearing.

I'm considering swapping out the OEM rear sprocket for a 40 tooth, while keeping the OEM 16 tooth front. Does anyone know if the OEM 525 chain is long enough to handle the larger rear sprocket? I'm far from due for a new chain, so wondering if I should just wait until I am to swap gearing.

Thanks

Should fit with the stock chain. You could flip the adjusters so the short end is pointing forwards, this should give you enough clearance to fit the bigger sprocket.
