Hi
Need to change the chain and sprockets I have a 06 model what size are the sprockets and how many links in the chain. Is it a 525 chain? Also I know the 07 models have different size sprockets is this an improvement? If so what are their sizes?

'07-'08... 16 & 38 (I believe '05-06 is 17 & 38 )
Supersprox does their stealth rear sprocket for the SD in a variety of sizes. (steel teeth, ally carrier, ti connections)
I've just ordered a 17 & 41 set. That's just a slightly smaller jump in ratio than 16 & 39. Just a bit harder off the line, without sacrificing much on the top. (shouldn't really hurt the gas milage either, with such a small jump)

Interesting. I've got around 24,000km (15,000 miles). My sprockets show wear but are probably still OK for a good number of miles. I'm more worried about the chain. Some of the links seem to be tight/kinking. I guess I also should check for stretch using the method in the manual.

Well, it seems I may be one of the rare ones who've actually changed their chain n sprox! I got about 27000 miles out of the original set, the when it was changed I had the 40T fitted by accident and after about 20 seconds of riding it there was no fuggin way I was going back to the 38T rear!! It was party time on the SD!! I havent looked back and I'm nearly at 31000 miles now.

Said it ebfore and I'll keep saying it 16/40 the ratio of kings.

if you have not tried the 41 you know not what living is,

joe has tried both, 40 and the "41" it is the stuff dreams are made of.

when your 1/2 way there do not assume you've reached the final destination.

as ktm does make many silly mistakes the 38 is for a 5 speed, maybe the engineers did not realise the extra gear or the 'no windshield' feature?

Did you change your front sprocket and chain at the same time? reason why I ask is my bike has got about 10 000kms on it and the chain and sprockets still look ok and usually if I'm changing chain/sprockets etc I'll do it all at the same time but I would still like to buy a 40 and give it a go (obviously alot cheaper to just get the rear sprocket instead of the whole lot) what do you reckon?

Hello Joely, I had only changed the rear sprocket as the bike was near new, when you change sprockets/chain at the bike shop or dealership most of them usually insist on changing them as a full set regardless of the miles.

ktm has a method in the owners manual to check for excessive stretch, I personally believe that if a chain is properly maintained you can reach 20,000 or more before it is necessary to replace the whole set, counter, rear and chain all. My belief is that a poorly maintained chain will literally eat itself if not kept clean dry and well lubricated. The sprockets develop a wear pattern, if this is ever noticed then it is time to change them all.
