does th enoise increase in freequency with the RPM? maybe valve clearance? really just guessing here....

Dificult to say as the engine then drowns out the noise - I thought it might be the valve clearance - the bike has 8500km - I am guessing they have never been done as I am not sure they always get done for the first service and the second service was just oil and filters
