Coolant Leak

Forum,

I bought a used SuperDuke in very nice shape. I took it into a local dealer in Pasadena, Ca to get the 6,000 mile service done. The bike is an 07 and I wanted them to flush the coolant. They mentioned to keep an eye on the coolant and oil levels. Well after a few rides I noticed that the coolant was low in the white over flow tank. I thought maybe it was burping air and that was normal. I got some coolant from Dealer and I added it...Low again, I then noticed this leak. I thought it was simple enough, I loosened the hose clamp, rotated the hose clamp to get a better grip on the hose and tightened it again. Well it is still leaking. Is there anything I am doing wrong? It is kinda of a Pain to get it back to the dealer.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Ken

That hose you are pointing to is not a coolant hose. It's the return line to the oil tank. The fluid you are seeing there is oil not coolant. Looks as if someone changed or topped up your oil and spilled some on top of the oil tank. You need to wash that area thouroughly to remove the remaing oil and your issue should subside.

Top off your coolant again. I know a guy who took his bike to the shop you're refering to and they didn't bleed his coolant system properly and he thought he had a leak as well. I told hin that it was likely not bled properly and it eventually stopped syphoning coolant out of the resivoir.

Good luck, John

@John,

I looked in the manual and saw that it was a return line. Thanks for pointing it out to me.

The oil is topped off (was low...Hmm)

I am going to pull off the RT side faring and clean the area and top off and make a not of the coolant level with tape.

People have suggested that I could pull the clutch cover an check for gunk to determine if it is a failing water pump.

Thanks for all your FAST & excellent help on this!

Ken

your WP seal might be leaking yet you WON'T have milkshake.

mine is leaking slowly enough that my oil still 'looks' fine. I use about 25% coolant.

once I removed the WP seal I saw some sludge . but I went too far with my self tapping screw and damaged the bearing so I have to rebuild the whole thing

AGRO!

AGRO!

Just got back from a good thrash,200 mile round trip mainly nice twisty roads but hit 140 a couple of times when it opened up.
Anyway noticed coolant leaking from somewhere but not quite sure where.Performance wasnt hinded in anyway and temp stayed ok at all times.
I did top up a couple of weeks ago and wondering if ive overfilled but its not past max line.I did a few 2nd 3rd gear wheelies that are inevitable and the occasional stoppie but dont think thats the cause?
Anybody got any ideas, its def coolant as it dried white on the engine etc.

Check the radiator cap. You might need a new one.

Hi all,

2010 SD 990

Got a slight coolant leak. It's on the right hand side, if you follow the solid pipe out of the water pump and up behind the oil tank to the thermostat housing, it's on the joint between solid pipe and first rubber pipe.

Don't fancy draining, refilling and burping the coolant system as I only did it last year for water pump shaft seal. Anyone know if there is enough solid pipe to get a screw jubilee clip above the existing clip, so I can get that on and sealed, then remove the old.

Any advice welcome. Cheers in advance.
