Cox Radiator Guard

What is the consensus about the Cox radiator guard? Unnecessary bling? A solution to a non-existent problem? An invaluable piece of kit? I'm interested in all perspectives as I am considering purchasing one, but can't fully justify it.

They protect the radiator
You can make your own, it's cheaper and more fun. .
I fitted a home made one because I just got a new radiator. My old radiator had quite a few dents from rocks and other stuff flying into it.

The rad is very thin and easy to puncture, there was a past post of a member here who was out on a long ride and a stone punctured his in the middle of nowhere, he put in I believe some rad puncture stuff and got him home,, first thing I installed on mine, and not being a cheap mo-fo, I just bought the COX unit, installed in 10 minutes, fit perfect, and I didn't have to search for the fab parts needed or fab the thing up,,,, but hey if you have the time,,,,,,,

Depending where you live a guard is a must. I made my own and then got a good deal on a COX. It fits well and I used slighly bigger cable ties to fit it. It's good exept for the foamy blocks you must stick on before fitting it. I gues that could have been somewhat better.

In NZ the roads are mostly tar with gravel pushed in to it. Plenty of loose stones fly around and with todays sticky tyres the bike in front of you scoops them up. My bike took plenty of hits and one in the radiator will cost.

Andrew Cox is a good friend of mine and always sends me a new rad gaurd for each new bike I purchase. Having said that I wouldn't ride any bike for long without one. As KTMGUY said, stones thrown up from bikes in front of you can damage your radiator. I've seen this happen on two seperate occasions to friends bikes (one on track and one on the road). I've personally never experienced this and I attribute it to the protection provided by this product.

Cheap insurance really and the clear anodised one looks really good as well (matches the expanded aluminium sheet in the chin fairing quite nicely).

I've done nearly 60000 miles on SDs and never had a problem but when I heard how much a new rad cost I bought a Cox guard. Fits great and looks nice and I dont worry now.

That's it.

Hi Shade,

Did you get yours from a UK supplier, or did you ship in from USA? If a UK supplier, would you be kind enough to let me know who, thanks.

Now on mine I installed the anodised "orange " one and painted the belly pan screen "orange " as well, and it all flows nicely,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, [/quote]

Can I get a picture? I am having trouble finding a picture of the orange cox guard on a bike... Thanks

got a cox guard on my SD, seems to work well, but still can get some pretty good bits of rock/debris smashing into the fins. I like the diagonal vents on the KTM adv rad guard, but would probably restrict airflow

Here's an example with a orange cox guard, not my bike though. I've made one my own for 6 euro's and painted it black.

Cox rad guard was one of the first things I fitted to my new SD. Easy to fit, looks good - nicely made and anodised in a range of colours to suit, and delivery from Cox to Switzerland was very prompt. But mainly it's about protecting the fine rad elements from getting bent or worse - particularly if you're out regularly with other bikes that throw up all kinds of crap due to their soft tyre compounds.
