custom dyno fuel map

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have Akra slip ons and a Power Commander...huge instant weight reduction and much cooler running (plus the great "motorcycle" sound...but with the baffles left in its still quiet enough for around town at lower RPM)...I rode it this way for several months but the map that came with the PC seemed to leave a flat spot around 6000 rpm...so....I found a local Dyno guy (a new motorcycle performance shop in Sylvan Lake, Alberta called RONIN Motorcycle Works..run by a young enthusiastic guy)...he told me the PC maps are crap...he put the bike on the dyno and remapped the fuel system...he happily told me that he found more HP at all points in the range, 3 Hp here. 5 hp there, etc. etc....the bike now runs smoother and faster..I have never had a bike custom mapped on a dyno and I am impressed. If you haven't tried it I highly recommend putting your bike on a dyno and having a custom fuel map made up...and I highly recommend RONIN

You just need to share the map file, your dyno operator may have given you a copy on disc?

If not, connect the Power Commander to a laptop, open the Power Commander software, save the map and email it to someone.....perhaps Plipton can keep a database of maps, with bike year, specification, state of tune etc...?

Sounds good to me. I'll host them on some webspace I have and people can download them freely

Just to touch on something that Robinpeck said in a prior post..

I agree that those who have had the custom map created for/on their own bike will have the most benefit from it ... and i HIGHLY recommend that if you've gone to the trouble/expense of buying a PCIII then you may as well fork out the few extra hundred dollars and get the map done .. but some people aren't close to qualified dyno tuners or even a dyno for that matter .. so at least setting up a repository of custom maps gives them some options to try.

Also .. i think RaceLeathers seemed to have the same experience i did when I took my bike to the dyno tuner .. i was told that the akra map from KTM (ie the zero map) was "better" than the appropriate map from the PC website.. (having said that he also said that the zero map was WAY out as well) so perhaps we can offer something closer to being right than DynoJet have.

Maybe not but it would be interesting for those that have had custom maps made with similar base set-ups to download the maps and compare on the PC software to see how different they really are.. might give us an idea of how "particular" each custom map is which may help us understand if what we are doing here is really worth it. If someone with the same/similar base set-up to say my bike, says that his/her custom map is WAY different to mine then we may be able to say with some confidence that loading a custom map from someone elses bike is of no great benefit and the only way to get the benefit of the PCIII is via a custom map.

Lets give it a go and see.

Thanks Zen.

I already had a look at the maps they had on offer, M925-508 is probably most appropriate for me, as I am not gay enough to use the baffles!

The reason I was asking for opinions is that I've heard from several different sources (and for different brands of bike) that some of the maps available on the website are crap!

Biggest change I have seen in two SD'S (07 SD & new 08 SDR) was the powercommander plus custom map.
Powercommander with downloaded maps was better than anything stock or re-mapped from KTM.
However, the stagged dynoed custom map (need full tank of gas) made the 07 SD smooth as silk. Dealer still says it is the smoothest SD he has ever road (he is currently ridding o8 SD with Akros).

I put the PWC III with the 07 custom map on the 08 SDR a couple of weeks ago and also changed the rear sprocket (38-40). The bike felt as smooth as the 07 with power of the 08 SDR.

The 08 SDR is currently being remapped (using the custom map created for the 07 SD they do not anticipate it should be that off but it will be interesting based on difference in the engine upgrades)wanted to check for any possible lean or rich spots.

You can try all the maps available (mine included) but if you spent the $ to have a SD or SDR you owe it to yourself to get it mapped by an expert.

Cost = PWC III, TUNE BOY, whatever and a custom map is less than a set of cans and the difference is BY FAR YOUR BIGGEST BANG PER BUCK (no less than shocking).

By the way:
My KTM dealer sticks a rod up the arse of the 07 SD and says the readings WERE great, dont change a thing. After I had it dynoed by an expert the mechanics showed me the difference on the map and it was way too lean on the bottom and way too rich on top). My dealer and his Dad are GREAT people, true friends and would do anything for you, however it is their JOB. For most guys on this forum this is OUR PASSION thus I ask for custom map from dynoe pro.

I am a 60 y/o white haired grandpa so I am not a racer nor do I try to be, or want to be but I AM PASSIONATE AND INTENSE IF I GET INTO SOMETHING and have always loved experimenting with my dirt bikes ( Recluse clutch, pipes, trials tyres (love in the single track).

Just my opinion but I appreciate all I have learned from this site and like to give back what I can.

TAKE WHAT YOU WANT AND THROW THE REST AWAY!

SEMPER FI AND BE SAFE. STUPID HURTS!

Can we see dyno charts for your bikes when done?

Here's my Dyno chart from PDQ

'05 990SD, 30,000 miles, Akra' round slip-on's, baffles in, standard air filter KTM map. The Dyno guy there, Nick, reckoned removing the baffles would get rid of the dip @ 6,000rpm.

Have a look at my dyno results mate.. my base set-up sounds imilar to yours .. albiet with less miles on the clock.. but I have teh dip around 6000 with and without the baffles .. I had a seperate map done for baffles in and out. Only real difference was in the VERy low end of the range.

re: "I love accelerating uphill (its a sickness!).."...I think I should have said, "I love accelerating WHILE quickly riding uphill"..I didn't mean just burning up a hill...I meant actively accelerating, gaining speed all the time... at the same time as I am zooming up a hill...Its something that bikes do well and automobiles do very poorly...sometimes I like to let a good string of cars and trucks pass me on the highway while approaching a hill...then accelete past the whole bunch in one go at the next hill....
