Dr Frankenstein Goes To Work

Well, I tried my best to sell my Graves exhaust at deeply discounted prices (less than half of retail), but a lot of griping about the system made for a hard sell. They never sold, so Dr. Frankenstein took matters into his own hands.

My two complaints about the Graves are that they:

1. Make me smell like ass after riding

2. Are essentially 'straight pipes' and neither perform nor sound good.

So, my theory on the stench is that the Graves are much longer than the stockers and thus, place the exhaust exit into the area of air that circulates up around my back while riding. My solution, chop them mothers down to a length that makes them similar to the stockers.

That portion of my plan may result in a sound and performance profile even more lothesome than the original Graves, so I'm also creating a baffle in the exit. It was discussed here before that Graves modified the cans to be a tad quiter by welding a sleve into the exit of the can. This sleve is basically a 4 inch section of straight pipe with no perforations or baffling. My method of getting the sound and performance where I want it is to cut slits into this sleve and bend baffles into the previously straight pipe. This section will look basically like any other system's baffle inserts.

Here's the pics so far. I got one can done today and I'll do the other tomorrow. The whole task is nerve-racking as hell and my new most-hated thing on the planet is stainless stell rivets. Hopefully this works or else I'll be performing some sort of exhaust sytem sacrifice in the garage.

Oh and no comments on how messy the garage is. I've got 10 pounds of crap in a 5 pound bag.

Let me know if the images don't show for anyone. This is my first time posting images and I wasn't sure to use the Photobucket 'direct link' or 'html code'

The pics show up fine.
And it looks like you're doing a great job! I can't wait to see the final product.
But on a slightly unrelated topic,... I can't believe you still have those reflectors still on the bike! (the ones by the lic. plate) (mind you, you're probably less likely to be "T-boned" with them in place)

They look great, modifieying 'good' parts always scare's me to death
Good luck with the silencing.

SSU,....."Nookem,Duke" has done what you speak of, he had graves make his pipes up in the prototype phase of production,

he may not want to talk about it.

but it is what you have so eloquently described with yer post and pics. go look in here

his are even shorter than the one's you have shown in yer pic.

and Ironlung had said, to alter with no perception of measurable success may be futile and irreversible, may need to be thought out carefully ?

we have had much debate in here of this to the point that my accident was blamed on it, the fumes are toxic they can kill you slowly

so this is a very valuable topic of discussion and needs to be played out, equally as important as the engine dieing issue

joes problem has greatly improved he is not quite sure as to WHY joe had the smell even with the stock pipe

so what you may be trying may not work at all Plipton had suggested a long time ago, that it was from wind eddies

joe does not claim to have the answers but he seeks the truth.

the test header pipe has been shipped and will be at my shop tomorrow, then the under engine exhaust will be in production after prototyping and testing.

just don't be giving my phone # out to anyone you do to trust.

Quote from pliton,,,, PMing me...Low slung zorst should look good. read the whole thread,,, it is classic.

The patient survived the procedure with no carbon fractures by some miracle, but there are a couple of battle scars on the end caps. Nothing serious, but I know they're there. Overall, I'm really happy with how things turned out. I took a ride today and not only was the sound much, much better, but I came back fresh as a daisy. No smell other than the faint aroma of beer farts, which is normal for Sundays.

The baffling I made really helped to change the tone of the exhaust. Less of a crack now and more of a boom. I also think it looks way, way better. I never realised how goofy the longer Graves looked until I saw the shorties.

The only real kick in the ass I've felt is that the left can (as it appears in the picture) is slightly longer than the right, about 1/8th of an inch. No biggie, but again, I know it's there. Even though my cuts were the same on both cans, I failed to account for the end caps possibly being unequally placed on the cans when I drilled the rivet holes.

You're filling my head with ideas, all I can think about is attacking a touring screen with a big screwdriver Not as expensive as an exhaust system but certainly equal on the pleasure factor
