After three weeks sitting doing nothing (the bike, not me!) i rolled the bike out last weekend for a wee tootle to find that it wouldn't start.

Dash comes on, fuel pump does it's thing and when the starter is hit it sounds like the starter relay just clicks furiously without turning the engine. Anyway, hooked it up to the optimate and left it overnight. Started first time the next day but after another 4days sitting it won't start again. Without checking the voltages i'm guessing the battery is pumped.

Is it covered by warranty? I'm guessing it's been fried as a result of the loose connection problems i had at the start of this thread?

Best place to get a new one?

Bike: 2008 KTM SDR with 37,560kms

The other day I was simply moving my bike around in my parking space and all of a sudden I saw the tech cycle like when you turn the key to the on position. Except I didn’t even have the key in the ignition! It reset the clock. Sometimes while I start the bike after it already went through the tech cycle it does the tech cycle again while the engine is running. Then other sometime when I start the bike up the high beam lights are on but the light switch is in the low beam position. Anybody got any idea's or clue's what’s happening or something to check

Bike and car electrics scare the shit out of me. Sorry that's not really helping I know but good luck fixing it

First thing to do is to try and make it happen eg key out and turn handlebars from side to side, apply front brake and push down on forks, etc.

Did the speedo light up, etc as when ignition is turned on or was it just the tacho sweep ?

Could be faulty speedo unit/damaged wiring but start with the speedo unit itself - dismantle and check for moisture/corrosion - then connector to the speedo unit:check for moisture/ corrosion - contact spray, blow out with compressed air and filll with dielectric grease - then ditto for ignition switch.

this hapend to me a few times when I was checking out other problems, check all around the headlight units connectors, and battery when they are unlugged and plugged back in the speedo goes through a check of some sort could be a loose wire at the battery,

Well again the other day while at the post office I inserted the key, turned it to on to start the bike and it started the tech process but stopped at 7000RPM and now there is no power at all. It time to start taking stuff a part. I'll report back on what the heck it is. Stand-by.

Water in the ignition switch?
Relay under the saddle?
Main relay on the battery box?
Get the electrical diagram and have a look. The power goes from the battery to the main relay on the battery box via the ignition switch and the on/off switch on the handle bar over a diode (which could be faulty also) to the power relay under the seat.
All you can do is follow it and check every component as you go.
Let me know if you need more help.

OK, so I finally had time to check out the bike. First thing I did of course was check the battery for voltage. Bingo! Dead or flat battery as some folks call it. It's only a two month old battery. I changed out the battery and the bike started right up. The battery was completely dead, it will not hold a charge so I suspect a bad voltage regulator fried it. Luckily I have a brand new one in my part box. I have seen a few folks having issues with theirs so about a year ago I went and got one. So far so good. The bike runs great now.

I don't know if this means anything but a few strange things happened before this issue started. When I used the blinkers they flashed at different rates at times. Since installing the new voltage regulator they work correctly now. The bike was hard to start at times but other times no issues at all. The voltage regulator may have been working intermittently but really don't know for certain. The day the bike loss all power it was running normally and all of a sudden it stop dead with no lights, no nothing working.

Thank you too all that provided me with advice. I will report back if I have other issues.

Don't understand how a dead/dying battery can fire up the speedo unit without ignition key in, high beam on but switch in low beam, etc..................are you sure you're not treating the symptoms rather than the disease?

My tacho did strange things as well when the battery barely had enough power to start up the engine. Second tacho run and stuck at 7 or 8000rpm when runing idle (engine speed itself was correct).
Charged the battery again (still giving 13V) and now there are no problems at all.
