Engine braking

Hi all

Last week after reading one of KTMax’s posts I decided to idle my SD for 20 min as per his instructions. This should have been done by the dealer when the Akras and map where installed but and may have been as the bike seemed to be running fine but as the bike had just been washed and was siting outside on its paddock stand I thought doing it again wouldn’t hurt. So on Saturday I took it for another blast and she felt fine except for one thing when shifting down to a lower gear the engine seems to not want to drop below 3000 RPM unless I pull in the clutch. I no that the SD has some software to stop revs dropping to fast on down shift to prevent rear wheel lockup but It never seemed as prominent before. Maybe because I haven’t been riding a lot lately and I was doing different riding then normal (suburban Streets and shopping centre car parks) I just noticed it more this time. Although it never felt dangerous, I do find it annoying as having owned lots of large singles in the past and like to use engine braking as part of my riding style and use the clutch to moderate any rear wheel lock up. Does anybody know if it is possible to disengage this software and if so has anybody tried to do so.

Cheers

In Short - I don't believe you can disable it....(only / maybe with the tuneboy)

Yes they do do that. Instead of a slipper clutch, the bike uses injection to keep some throttle on. Try banging down the gears no clutch or hard droppping clutch...it does work no lockups for me!

Not sure about holding 3000rpm - I will have to check. I do know they idle quite high. I have dropped mine to about 1400rpm - not too sure if it will work ok lower??? Bummer that you need to open the tank and pull the airbox top off to adjust it

Any other info KTMax - from your exhaustive dealer knowledge of KTM hardware? You never cease to amaze me... & you will need to tell me where you get this 'secret' info from!

Thanks Gregz

When I say 3000 rpm that just seem to be the speed I notice when looking down to the taco. I’ve only noticed it in the lower 2 gears at quite slow speeds. That maybe why I’ve only just noticed it lately as I’ve had to slow down a bit, due to only having only 2 points left on my licence. Didn’t seem to notice at a track day I did, but did manage to lock the back wheel a couple of times coming into one particularly tight hairpin, but I was using a bit of back brake as well as dropping gears quite fast So if this anti locking thing does work it only seems to work at low speed when you don’t need it.

By the way Gregz, great pic in the photo section of the V2 engine comparison makes the LC8 look like a 600 compared to the others.
