Help with 2nd throttle valve issues

samba

Guys,

since installing my new airbox and moto's 2ndary butterflies, my bike's been complaining that its 2nd throttle valve stepper motor is malfunctioning (fault code 72).

Today I received a replacement stepper motor in the post, but i'm struggling to get the old one off.

Has anyone else removed this part? I've removed the 3 bolts but it won't come loose from the bit where it actually slots onto the throttle valve.

any help? bike is in bits...

also when I was fitting the flies etc, I could move them by hand very easily. Now they're very stiff... I suspect this is a symptom of the stepper motor being goosed...anyone have any alternative suggestions?

hadn't realised i'd posted this twice by the way....apologies....

right, i've had a damn good fiddle this evening, and have come to a few conclusions/made a few observations.

First, to inform others....

this is the 2nd throttle valve stepper motor assembly, mounted to the rearward throttle body

here it is again a little closer, with the 2nd throttle valve sensor unplugged

and the whole thing removed. note my cunning use of a shit iphone camera to stop people seeing my VIN...
Image

this is the "sticky out thing that controls the 2nd throttle valves (or flies)"
Image

and the top-most of the two links shown here is the one for the 2ndary flies/2nd throttle valve. mine is stiff as fck...no idea why but this is what's causing me my problems. Note that it was not stiff as fck a few weeks ago when I installed my 2ndary butterflies....

any ideas why it's stiff as fck?! i had a look and don't think my loctite got anywhere except for the screws on the flies...

How goes it, Samba - any progress? I haven't had a chance to look at mine, but if there's a way to disconnect the linkage to check if it is indeed the rear shaft that's binding and not the front...

samba, im the guy from advrider. can you completely remove the shaft? and then roll it on a piece of glass or somthing to see if it wobbles? i am one who doesnt run flies at all. in fact if i could figure out a way of removeing the stepper motor, shafts and linkage without throwing the FI light i would. personally i think the whole secondary butterfly system is bs. and i would like to get rid of it.

**update**

right, well I found some time to dive into my airbox last night and have a fiddle with my throttle bodies. I'm starting to think maybe the loctite guys are right as upon removing the flies I found residue, and it looks like there's some at the ends of the shaft too where it passes through the TB. Inspecting the linkage it looks in perfect nick, and the shafts look straight as an arrow to my eye too. Removing the linkage and shafts might be tricky, it looks like it may be possible but would rule out immediate refitting, leaving me with 4 holes in my TBs...

Right... I had a poke around first but quickly decided to remove the flies. luckily didn't do any damage to the screw heads again

here you can see the muck left over...

Rotating the shafts via the linkage, they look true enough to me... hard to see in photos, especially with my poor camera, but in the metal they look perfect

here you can see the linkage looks good as new too

getting up close and personal with the shafts (ooh err...) (this is after I cleaned up I think ) it looks like there's probably some loctite worked its way in there, in between the TB wall and the shaft

Did you use locktite in a bucket and brush to paint it on?
That looks like the problem!

So I suppose this should be in motohooligan's instructions, a warning. One drop too much, bike on sidestand. The stuff does run like nothing else.

Wrap some string...or paper towel around the shaft, that would do it.
